I am investigating how social presence affects eye movements in tasks that require attentional mediation. The presence of others is said to sometimes facilitate and sometimes impair performance compared to when individuals are alone. Although different theories have been proposed to explain these social effects, they were mostly tailored to explain human behavior and are based on complex cognitive functions. Paradoxically, animals like ants and cockroaches are also subject of even mere presence social influences. As such, I am exploring whether there should be a common ground that can explain social effects in a broader perspective. In particular, I believe that simple attentional process must have a key role mediating our behavior and actions when other people or conspecifics are present. Eye movements are sensitive to early processes of attention and, hence, they constitute an excellent substrate to analyse the role that attention plays in different social contexts.
