Lund Philosophical Society: Maria Alvarez "Blame, Time and Redemption"
Lund Philosophical Society invites everyone to attend Maria Alvarez's talk "Blame, Time and Redemption" on the 19th of February at 18:15 in LUX:B237.
Dear friends and members of the Lund Philosophical Society,
We are pleased to announce our first speaker of 2026: Maria Alvarez, professor of philosophy at King's College London. She will give a talk titled "Blame, Time and Redemption" on February 19th at 18:15 in LUX:B237.
Abstract: Suppose that someone is blameworthy for a wrong they have committed. Must they remain blameworthy, and to the same extent, forever? Some hold that blameworthiness cannot diminish. I assess three views presented by their opponents that attempt to explain how a wrongdoer can become less worthy of blame. I argue that, although each gets something right, none fully vindicates the possibility of reduced blameworthiness. After offering an account of the justification of blame, I suggest that the question of blameworthiness over time is best understood through the related phenomena of atonement and redemption..
The talk will be followed by an informal reception.
