Higher Sem in Practical Philosophy: Matt King (Univ of Alabama) "Retributive Thoughts"

The department of philosophy is delighted to welcome Prof Matt King (University of Alabama at Birmingham). Prof King will give a self-contained talk at the Higher seminar in practical philosophy with the title:

"Retributive Thoughts"

Abstract: There is a frequent line of thought tying blameworthiness to deserved sanction. The blameworthy deserve hard treatment because the blameworthy deserve blame and blame is a form of hard treatment. But since we have reason to reject the idea that blame is a sanction, we have reason to reject this line of thought. I then discuss some larger lessons for thinking about deserved blame.
