2 April 2025 18:15 to 19:30 Lecture/talk

Lund Philosophical Society invites everyone to attend Paulina Sliwa's talk "Escaping the Echo Chamber" on the 2nd of April at 18:15 in LUX: B237.

Dear friends and members of the Lund Philosophical Society,

We are pleased to announce our 3rd speaker of 2025: Paulina Sliwa, professor of moral and political philosophy at the University of Vienna. She will give a talk titled "Escaping the Echo Chamber" on April 2nd at 18:15 in LUX: B237.

Abstract: Escaping the Echo Chamber
The phenomenon of echo chambers has attracted much interest and concern recently. It has been argued that the echo chambers created by social media lead to political polarisation and distrust. But what exactly are echo chambers? And, if you are stuck in one, how can you escape? Philosophers have argued that echo chambers are belief-systems. An agent who is stuck in an echo chamber has acquired a coherent but faulty belief system. I propose an alternative picture: echo chambers are environments which actively discourage a range of perspectives. An individual who is stuck in an echo chamber has lost a skill: the skill of perspectival flexibility.

As always, the talk will be followed by an informal reception in the Department of Philosophy's staff room
