This paper explores how the intense emotions and shifting priorities of passionate romantic love may undermine the autonomy required for informed consent. Drawing parallels with impairments caused by alcohol and narcotics, it argues that love’s neurochemical effects can compromise cognitive capacities and that this raises ethical concerns. These issues are particularly acute in cases of unequal infatuation, where one individual is more affected, creating power imbalances and risks of exploitation. The paper calls for further research on the balance between the apparent value of love’s arational aspects and the broader risk that those aspects put us in harm’s way.
