Long duration of airway but not systemic effects of inhaled formoterol in asthmatic patients.

RATIONALE: Formoterol is approved as asthma rescue medication in many countries. The exact duration of the airway vs. systemic effects of formoterol compared with another rescue medication, salbutamol, has not been evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To assess the duration of airway bronchodilatory effects vs. systemic effects of inhaled formoterol and salbutamol in asthmatic patients. METHODS: Twenty-six patie

Reliability and structural validity of an assessment of occupational value

This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the American English (Am. Eng.) version of the Occupational Value Assessment with predefined items (OVal-pd). The OVal-pd is a 26-item Likert-like questionnaire designed to assess the construct of occupational value as framed within the Value and Meaning in Occupations model (ValMO). Following a translation from the Swedish OVal-pd, 277 randomly

A bilberry drink with fermented oatmeal decreases postprandial insulin demand in young healthy adults

Background: in traditional medicine, blueberries have been used to facilitate blood glucose regulation in type 2 diabetes. Recent studies in diabetic mice have indicated facilitated glycaemic regulation following dietary supplementation with extracts from European blueberries, also called bilberries, (Vaccinium myrtillus). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of fermented

Uterine artery Doppler in high-risk pregnancies at 23-24 gestational weeks is of value in predicting adverse outcome of pregnancy and selecting cases for more intense surveillance

ObjectiveTo assess the role of the placental arterial Doppler examination at 23-24 gestational weeks for predicting adverse perinatal outcome in high-risk pregnancies. DesignRetrospective register study. SettingSkane University Hospital in Malmo. PopulationSix hundred and forty-five women with high-risk pregnancies, without fetal malformations or chromosomal abnormalities. MethodsPlacental (uterin

Changes in Parents' Time Use and Its Relationship to Child Obesity.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim was to explore any change in parents' time use together with their children, changes in their perceived occupational value, and its relationship to children's body mass index (BMI) over the course of a one-year occupation-focused family intervention. Method: The study sample consisted of participants in one arm of a randomized controlled trial, involving mothers and fat

Texturing a responsible corporate identity: A comparative analysis of Appraisal in BP's and IKEA's 2009 corporate social reports

In response to a growing public demand for corporate accountability and social responsibility, large companies are investing increasing efforts in the communication of their responsible conduct. Through corporate social reports, they voluntarily account for the social and environmental effects of their operations and document their efforts to implement sustainability principles. This paper present

Delay From First Medical Contact to Primary PCI and All-Cause Mortality: A Nationwide Study of Patients With ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction.

Early reperfusion in the setting of an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is of utmost importance. However, the effects of early versus late reperfusion in this patient group undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) have so far been inconsistent in previous studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate in a nationwide cohort the effects of delay from first medical c

Multicentre European study of thalamic stimulation for parkinsonian tremor: a 6 year follow-up

Aim: To evaluate the results of ventral intermediate (Vim) thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) in patients with tremor predominant Parkinson's disease (PD) at 6 years post surgery. Methods: This was a prolonged follow-up study of 38 patients from eight centres who participated in a multicentre study, the 1 year results of which have been published previously. Total scores as well as scores for i

Postprandial apoE Isoform and Conformational Changes Associated with VLDL Lipolysis Products Modulate Monocyte Inflammation

Objective: Postprandial hyperlipemia, characterized by increased circulating very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and circulating lipopolysaccharide (LPS), has been proposed as a mechanism of vascular injury. Our goal was to examine the interactions between postprandial lipoproteins, LPS, and apoE3 and apoE4 on monocyte activation. Methods and Results: We showed that apoE3 complexed to phospholipi

The Dead Sea Future Elevation

In this paper water and salt mass balances for the Dead Sea were modeled. Precipitation, evaporation, river discharges, ground water flows, input/output from potash companies and salt production, and brine discharge were included in the models. The mixing time in the Dead Sea was modeled using a single-layer (well-mixed) a two-layer (stratified) system. Using the single-layer approach the water le

The semiotic hierarchy: life, consciousness, signs and language

This article outlines a general theory of meaning, The Semiotic Hierarchy, which distinguishes between four major levels in the organization of meaning: life, consciousness, sign function and language, where each of these, in this order, both rests on the previous level, and makes possible the attainment of the next. This is shown to be one possible instantiation of the Cognitive Semiotics program

The association between glucometabolic disturbances, traditional cardiovascular risk factors and self-rated health by age and gender: A cross-sectional analysis within the Malmo Preventive Project

Background: The increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in diabetic compared to non-diabetic subjects seems to decrease with age. Whether this age-related reduction applies to CVD risk factors, and whether it is limited to established diabetes mellitus (DM) or also applies to pre-diabetic conditions are not well known. Methods: Using a cross-sectional design we compared the strength of the

The development of public attitudes towards the Stockholm congestion trial

A full-scale congestion charging trial was carried out in Stockholm the first months of 2006. Almost half of respondents in a county-wide survey stated that they changed their attitudes towards congestion charges during the trial. Most of them became more positive. An analysis of media shows that the attitudinal change in media towards the trial coincides with the attitudinal change of the public.

A short review on SSF - an interesting process option for ethanol production from lignocellulosic feedstocks.

ABSTRACT: Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) is one process option for production of ethanol from lignocellulose. The principal benefits of performing the enzymatic hydrolysis together with the fermentation, instead of in a separate step after the hydrolysis, are the reduced end-product inhibition of the enzymatic hydrolysis, and the reduced investment costs. The principal drawba

The spatial tuning of achromatic and chromatic vision in budgerigars

Birds are assumed to use half of their cones (double cones) to detect fine spatial detail while their other half (single cones) is used for color vision. However, the spatial resolution of the color pathway in birds has never been studied. We determined the spatial contrast sensitivity to achromatic and isoluminant red-green and blue-green color gratings in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). C

Thermodynamic and kinetic characterization of host-guest association between bolaform surfactants and alpha- and beta-cyclodextrins

The thermodynamics and kinetics of formation of host-guest complexes between a series of bolaform surfactants of type C(n)Me(6)(2+)2Br(-) (n = 8, 10, and 12) and alpha-cyclodextrin and beta-cyclodextrin were studied with the aid of isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) at 298.15 and 308.20 K. The association constant, the enthalpy, and the entropy of formation were determined. The obtained thermo

STIM evaluation in GeoPIXE to complement the quantitative dynamic analysis

The GeoPIXE software for quantitative PIXE trace element imaging and analysis is a well established package for evaluation of characteristic X-ray data for both PIXE and SXRF. For the case of microbeam applications on semi-thick samples knowledge of the local areal density distribution is important for precise quantification. A technique is reported to achieve this using the measurement of beam pa
