Gröbner Basis Approach to Some Combinatorial Problems

We consider several simple combinatorial problems and discuss different ways to express them using polynomial equations and try to describe the Gröbner basis of the corresponding ideals. The main instruments are complete symmetric polynomials that help to express different conditions in rather compact way.

Is Human Fear Affecting Public Willingness to Pay for the Management and Conservation of Large Carnivores?

From an interdisciplinary approach, this study aims at analyzing self-reported animal fear, specifically large carnivore fear, in relation to public willingness to pay to fulfill a governmental policy on large carnivore-induced costs. In a survey in Sweden involving more than 2,000 respondents, it was found that people whose animal fear was directed particularly toward large carnivores were less l

In Search of the Via Media between Christ and Marx: A Study of Bishop Ding Guangxun's Contextual Theology

This dissertation is the first academic treatment and systematic analysis on the theology of Bishop Ding Guangxun (K.H. Ding) who is an internationally- renowned Christian leader of the Chinese Protestant Church in contemporary China. It seeks to explore the development of Bishop Ding’s contextual theology with special emphasis on his political theology of accommodation and cultural indigenization

Sense of coherence and disability and the relationship with life satisfaction 6-15 years after traumatic brain injury in northern Sweden

The objective of the study was to assess sense of coherence (SOC) many years after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and explore the relationship between SOC and self-rated life satisfaction (LS) as well as measures of functioning and disability, sex, age at injury, injury severity and time post-injury. Sixty-six individuals (aged 18-65 years) who were 6-15 years post-injury were interviewed. Data on S

Pyrophosphate as a central energy carrier in the hydrogen-producing extremely thermophilic Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus

The role of inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) as an energy carrier in the central metabolism of the extremely thermophilic bacterium Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus was investigated. In agreement with its annotated genome sequence, cell extracts were shown to exhibit PPi-dependent phosphofructokinase and pyruvate phosphate dikinase activity. In addition, membrane-bound pyrophosphatase activity wa

Inhibition of nuclear factor of activated T-cells (NFAT) suppresses accelerated atherosclerosis in diabetic mice.

Diabetic patients have a much more widespread and aggressive form of atherosclerosis and therefore, higher risk for myocardial infarction, peripheral vascular disease and stroke, but the molecular mechanisms leading to accelerated damage are still unclear. Recently, we showed that hyperglycemia activates the transcription factor NFAT in the arterial wall, inducing the expression of the pro-atheros

Impact of peri-transplant heart failure & left-ventricular diastolic dysfunction on outcomes following liver transplantation

Background & Aims: Assess the prevalence of peri-transplant heart failure and its potential relation to post-transplant morbidity and mortality. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 234 consecutive cirrhotic patients undergoing liver transplantation in a single European center from 1999 to 2007 (mean age 52, 30% women, 36% with alcoholic liver disease, 24% with viral hepatitis, 18%

Crossed Product Structures Associated with Topological Dynamical Systems

We study connections between topological dynamical systems and associated algebras of crossed product type. We derive equivalences between structural properties of a crossed product and dynamical properties of the associated system and furthermore derive qualitative results concerning the crossed product that are true regardless of the corresponding dynamical system. The systems principally invest

Associations of HbA1c and educational level with risk of cardiovascular events in 32871 drug-treated patients with Type2 diabetes: a cohort study in primary care

Aims To explore the association of HbA1c and educational level with risk of cardiovascular events and mortality in patients with Type2 diabetes. Methods A cohort of 32871 patients with Type2 diabetes aged 35years and older identified by extracting data from electronic patient records for all patients who had a diagnosis of Type2 diabetes and had glucose-lowering agents prescribed between 1999 and

PVC flooring at home and development of asthma among young children in Sweden, a 10-year follow-up

The incidence of asthma and allergy has increased throughout the developed world over the past decades. During the same period of time, the use of industrial chemicals such as phthalates, commonly used as plasticizers in polyvinylchloride (PVC) flooring material, has increased. The aim of this study was to investigate whether PVC flooring in the home of children in the age of 1-5years is associate

Ability of Serum Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein, Ubiquitin C-Terminal Hydrolase-L1, and S100B to Differentiate Normal and Abnormal Head Computed Tomography Findings in Patients with Suspected Mild or Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury.

Head Computed Tomography (CT) imaging is still a commonly obtained diagnostic test for patients with minor head injury despite availability of clinical decision rules to guide imaging use and recommendations to reduce radiation exposure resulting from unnecessary imaging. This prospective multi-center observational study of 251 patients with suspected mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI)

Studies on the host response to infection in the circulatory system

Popular Abstract in Arabic Vårt immunförsvar är fantastiskt. Vid detta tillståndSepsis is a heterogeneous, dynamic, and complex syndrome caused by interaction between the host and the invading pathogen. It is associated with an overwhelmingly dysregulated immune response, and also immunosuppression. In spite of our improved understanding of the underlying molecular pathology, sepsis still remains a common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This is reflected in the un

EULAR Sjögren's syndrome disease activity index (ESSDAI): a user guide.

The EULAR Sjögren's syndrome (SS) disease activity index (ESSDAI) is a systemic disease activity index that was designed to measure disease activity in patients with primary SS. With the growing use of the ESSDAI, some domains appear to be more challenging to rate than others. The ESSDAI is now in use as a gold standard to measure disease activity in clinical studies, and as an outcome measure, ev

T. S. Eliot, Emotion and the Reader

From the mid-1990s onwards, the humanities and social sciences have devoted a great deal of attention to the operations of the affects, and there has been much talk about "the affective turn". This article begins by looking at the impact of that phenomenon on scholarly and critical work on T. S. Eliot, a milder impact than one might have expected. It then goes on to investigate the interplay of em
