Treatment of a benzene solution of (tmeda)PdMe2 or (dppe)PdMe2 with carbon dioxide gives the corresponding methyl bicarbonate complex, (L-L)PdMe(O2COH). These were characterised by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Under strictly dry conditions no reaction was observed. Recrystallisation of the tmeda bicarbonate complex from acetone yields the corresponding eta(2)-carbonate complex, which w

Purpose: alpha-Melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH; Fluka Chemie AG, Geneva, Switzerland) and oxytocin induce erection in rats after intracerebroventricular administration. We studied possible interactions of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone with mechanisms pertaining to oxytocin or nitric oxide. Materials and Methods: We used 78 anesthetized male Sprague-Dawley rats. Catheters were impl

The gleno-humeral joint space in standard antero-posterior images of 175 normal subjects was measured at three different sites. The average of the three measurements, the integral joint space, was calculated and was found to be between 4 and 5 mm. The value does not change with age, except in women, in whom it increases slightly. A narrow joint space in an elderly patient should not be expected si

For the new Munich high-flux reactor FRM-II a fission fragment accelerator is under design. The accelerator will deliver intense mass-separated beams of very neutron-rich fission fragments with energies at and beyond the Coulomb barrier. One main physics goal will be the investigation of very heavy neutron-rich nuclei produced in fusion reactions.

In order to elucidate the influence of nicotine smoking on bone mass in elderly women, bone mass was cross-sectionally assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in total body, hip and lumbar spine, as well as with ultrasound of calcaneus and phalanges of the hand. Subjects were 1,042, 75-year old women, recruited on a population basis (Osteoporosis Prospective Risk Assessment (OPRA) study

Along with an increasingly globalized business environment and a strongly held corporate belief that the world can be rationally managed, the last two decades have witnessed a growing demand for normative models dealing with cross-cultural management issues. This trend has allowed cross-cultural management to establish itself as a significant research field, with much of the initial inspiration co

beta-Microseminoprotein (MSP) is a small cysteine-rich protein (molecular mass about 10 kDa) first isolated from human seminal plasma and later identified in several other organisms. The function of MSP is not known, but a recent study has shown MSP to bind CRISP-3, a protein present in neutrophilic granulocytes. The amino acid sequence is highly variable between species raising the question of th

Projectilelike fragment emission is studied via two-particle correlation functions, constructed from coincidence data detected at very forward angles (0.7degreesless than or equal totheta(lab)less than or equal to7degrees) in the E/A=44 and 77 MeV Ar-40+Al-27 reactions. The shape of the proton-proton correlation function is unexpected. Possible origins of this effect are discussed and a way to ree

A method is presented for estimating the long exposure point spreadfunction (PSF) degradation due to tilt anisoplanatism in alaser-guide-star-based multiconjugate adaptive optics systems fromcontrol loop data. The algorithm is tested in numerical Monte Carlosimulations of the separately driven low-order null-mode system, and isshown to be robust and accurate with less than 10 relative error inboth

Jordbrukssamhället har gett vika fLarge transformations of technologies have occurred in the Swedish economy during the last two centuries, resulting in higher income, better quality of products and changing composition of GDP. An agrarian society has given way to an industrial society and lately to a post-industrial phase. The energy supply systems have changed, from traditional energy carriers, such as firewood and muscle energy

Lower limb lymphedema (LLL) is a common but neglected problem in palliative cancer patients. No studies have focused on these patients' experiences of lymphedema. The aims of this study were to explore patients' experiences regarding LLL and how they manage to deal with this in the late palliative stage. Methods: Thirteen patients with cancer-related LLL were included to satisfy a maximum variatio

The recruitment of antigen-specific T lymphocytes to the intestinal mucosa is central to the development of an effective mucosal immune response, yet the mechanism by which this process occurs remains to be fully defined. Here we show that the CC chemokine receptor 9 (CCR9) is selectively and functionally expressed on murine alpha(E)beta(7)(+) naive CD8alphabeta(+) lymphocytes and a subset of rece

The population-based Reykjavik Heart Study, started in 1967, aims at finding and evaluating risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. It included 4,137 men born between 1907 and 1934 and we examined all fractures recorded in these subjects from January 1977 until the end of December 2000, or death. Their mean age at the start of this study was 54 (42-69) years and the mean follow-up time 19 years.
