The torque-maximizing field-weakening control scheme proposed by Kim and Sul is developed further. The performance under imperfect field orientation conditions is investigated, and it is shown that an overestimated-rather than an underestimated-model leakage inductance should be used. A slightly modified algorithm, which offers better robustness and reduced computational complexity, is presented.

Abstract Knowledge of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is required to detect and follow impairment of renal function, to allow correct dosage of drugs cleared by the kidneys, and for the use of nephrotoxic contrast media. Correct determination of GFR requires invasive techniques, which are expensive, slow and not risk-free. Therefore, GFR-prediction equations based solely upon cystatin C or creati

Background: The hyperdense middle cerebral artery sign (HMCAS) is one of the early changes seen on the computed tomography in acute ischemic stroke of MCA territory. Aims: To evaluate the reliability of subjective evaluation of HMCAS on CT performed at multidetector CT (MDCT) and evaluated in the Picture Archiving Communication Systems, to define objective criteria for HMCAS and to find out if the

The issues involved in supporting real-time wireless Internet services go beyond the problem of forwarding packets to the correct destination of a mobile host. These issues include handover latency, availability of network resources after moving, and a proper charging and accounting infrastructure. Through a survey of current research in these areas, we discuss various concerns of integrating mobi

Loss of cognitive function and hypertension are two common conditions in the elderly and both significantly contribute to loss of personal independency. Microvascular brain damage - the result of age-associated alteration in large arteries and the progressive mismatch of their cross-talk with small cerebral arteries - represents a potent risk factor for cognitive decline and for the onset of demen

Homogeneous gels represent a new type of (electro)chromatographic media possessing unique separation properties unmatched with any other chromatographic beds. It is important to emphasize that they principally differ from continuous beds, polymer rods (better known as monoliths), which are particulate separation media with pores permitting hydrodynamic flow through the columns. Monoliths, thus, ar

New technology requirements derived from the exploitation of novel energy resources, and the needs for improvement of the energy efficiency of current power generation systems are pushing the industry towards the search of alternative working fluids. The great challenge for these non-conventional fluids is to provide satisfactory performances and fill the existing lack of media for some innovative

Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a congenital erythroid hypoplastic anemia, characterized by macrocytic anemia, reticulocytopenia, and severely reduced numbers of erythroid precursors in the bone marrow. For more than fifty years, glucocorticoids have remained the main option for pharmacological treatment of DBA. While continuous glucocorticoid administration increases hemoglobin levels in a major

Functional analysis and Monte Carlo simulation were used to quantify uncertainties in model simulation of pollution behaviour and effects. The first-order part of the functional analysis method provides a measure of uncertainties in dependent variables in terms of uncertainties in independent variables. The procedure is based on first-order terms in the Taylor series expansion of the dependent var

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Renal function decreases with age. Dosage adjustment according to renal function is indicated for many drugs, in order to avoid adverse reactions of medications and/or aggravation of renal impairment. There are several ways to assess renal function in the elderly, but no way is ideal. The aim of the study was to explore renal function in elderly subjects in nursing homes and

Gram-negative sepsis is accompanied by a disproportionate innate immune response and excessive coagulation mainly induced by endotoxins released from bacteria. Due to rising antibiotic resistance and current lack of other effective treatments there is an urgent need for new therapies. We here present a new treatment concept for sepsis and endotoxin-mediated shock, based on host defense peptides fr
