Lower risk of fat formation and fibrosis if lymphedema is treated in time

The economic point of view : A defence of the concept of psychic energy, its place in theory and practic

Därmed skulle Darwin s a s ställas utanför psykologin. Psykisk energi kan också visThis thesis purports to prove the logical necessity of the psychic energy concept discarded by modern psychoanalysis by linking the "evolutionistic argument" against epiphenomenalism to Brillouin´s negentropy principle. If our conscious awareness of affects and other psychological events should be attributed a signal value at all, they must necessarily exercise effect on the soma. This presupposes

Describing patterns of daily occupations - A methodological study comparing data from four different methods.

The importance of patterns of daily occupations to health has been emphasised ever since occupational therapy was founded, but little is known about this relationship. The aim of this study was to describe in detail one woman’s pattern of daily occupations as an initial step in developing strategies for further studies of patterns of daily occupations. Four different methods were used, one on each

Ankle fractures

The results of three separate studies on ankle fractures are presented. Clinical information is provided concerning the epidemiology and a comparison of closed versus open treatment, and a discussion is presented concerning what results can be expected 30 years after closed treatment for an ankle fracture.

The influence of permeant properties on the sorption step in hydrophobic pervaporation.

Liquid solubility measurements were performed by immersion of poly(octyl)methylsiloxane (POMS) in dilute aqueous solutions of homologous series of aliphatic esters and alcohols with compound specific concentrations of 20, 40, 80 and 120 ppm. Measurements were performed at 20 °C with both single- and multi-compound mixtures and linear sorption isotherms were obtained. By fitting experimentally dete

Giant polarization anisotropy in optical transitions of free-standing InP nanowires

We report a theoretical study of the electronic structure and optical properties of free-standing semiconductor nanowires, based on an atomistic tight-binding approach. It is shown that the optical transition between the valence-band maximum and conduction-band minimum of an intrinsic nanowire is fully polarized along the wire axis, and this giant polarization anisotropy can be explained in terms

Contact zones and species limits: Hybridization between lineages of the California Newt, Taricha torosa, in the southern Sierra Nevada

Recent phylogeographic work on Taricha torosa has revealed that the subspecific lineages, T. t. torosa and T. t. sierrae, are distinct evolutionary lineages that form a secondary contact zone in the southern Sierra Nevada of California. I examined the dynamics of this contact zone using two allozyme markers, mitochondrial DNA, morphometrics (head shape), and head color pattern. The subspecific lin

An artifact in measurements of in vivo light-induced absorbance changes

The effects of scattered actinic radiation on photomultipliers (Hamamatsu R-562) were investigated. Using cotton-wool to model dense biological preparations, it was found that the scattered actinic radiation received by the photomultiplier gives rise to phytochrome-like signals. This demonstrated the necessity to shield the photomultiplier from scattered actinic light for sensitive measurements wi

Samtidigt finns inte nåThis longitudinal study draws the attention to some adolescents' images of the living-, study- and learning situations into, through and out of the upper secondary school period. The aim implies an examination of the ways a study group with "severe physical disabilities" describes their experiences of phenomena in connection with processes of co-operation and influence. The potential for soil carbon sequestration in three tropical dryland farming systems of Africa and Latin America: A modelling approach

Historically, agriculturally induced CO2 release from soils has contributed to rising levels in the atmosphere. However, by using appropriate management, soils can be turned into carbon sinks. Many of the dryland regions of the world are characterised by degraded soils, a high incidence of poverty and a low capacity to invest in agriculture. Two well-proven soil organic matter models (CENTURY 4.0

Motorikobservationer med MUGI observationsschema som underlag genomförs varje åThe aim of this thesis is to study effects of an extension of physical education/activity and motor training on motor skills, attention and cognition during a period of three years. Another aim is to develop a test, MUGI observationsschema, which could be useful in charting motor skills of school pupils. The study has two intervention groups (n=152) that have physical activity and motor training o

PACS for radiology conferences--improvement of application software

The introduction of PACS in a radiology department means that most functions that are available in the film-based system must be included. One important function is the radiology conference. The handling and application programs of digital workstations are normally not developed for demonstrations of many images in a limited time. This paper describes a workstation with specially designed software

Indentation testing of a bone defect filled with two different injectable bone substitutes

Injectable bone substitutes (IBS) based on calcium phosphate (CaP) and/or calcium sulphate (CaS) are used as fillers in bone defects to stimulate bone integration and allow mechanical loading. Two types of IBS, IBS-1 is CaP+20%CaS and IBS-2 is CaS+40% hydroxyapatite, were investigated. The materials were injected into holes in the femur and tibia in rabbits. After 10 weeks the femora were subjecte

Surface core level shift observed on NiAl(110)

Using high resolution core level spectroscopy, a surface core level shift towards lower binding energy of -0.13 eV is determined for the 2p level of the outwardly relaxed Al surface atoms on NiAl(110). Density functional theory based calculations with inclusion of final state effects yield a value of -0.14 eV for this shift in excellent agreement with experiment. We show that the initial state app
