A structural study of Ruddlesden-Popper phases Sr3-xYx(Fe125Ni075)O7-δ with x ≤ 0.75 by neutron powder diffraction and EXAFS/XANES spectroscopy
The structures of Ruddlesden-Popper n = 2 member phases Sr3-xYxFe125Ni0.75O7-δ with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.75 have been investigated using neutron powder diffraction and K-edge Fe and Ni EXAFS/XANES spectroscopy in order to gain information about the evolution of the oxygen vacancy distribution and Fe/Ni oxidation state with x. Both samples prepared at 1300°C under a flow of N2(g), with δ = 1.41-1.00, and samp

Unilateral central retinal vein occlusion as a first manifestation of diabetes mellitus in a ten-year-old girl
Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is relatively rare in the pediatric age group. We present a case of CRVO as the first manifestation of diabetes mellitus in a ten-year-old girl. The associated macular edema was managed successfully with a single injection of Ranibizumab. Ophthalmologists should consider the possibility of diabetes mellitus in pediatric cases of CRVO.
Transforming data into knowledge for improved wastewater treatment operation : A critical review of techniques
The aim of this paper is to describe the state-of-the art computer-based techniques for data analysis to improve operation of wastewater treatment plants. A comprehensive review of peer-reviewed papers shows that European researchers have led academic computer-based method development during the last two decades. The most cited techniques are artificial neural networks, principal component analysi

Prevalence of skin disease in a population-based sample of adults from five European countries
Background: There is a lack of prevalence data on skin diseases in the general adult population; most studies have been carried out in small, national or consecutive clinical samples. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of common skin disease in the general European population and to assess differences in the characteristics of treatment between countries. Methods: A random sample consisting o
Sick Leave After Surgery for Thumb Carpometacarpal Osteoarthritis : A Population-Based Study
Purpose: Patients undergoing surgery for thumb carpometacarpal (CMC1) osteoarthritis often require sick leave owing to postoperative immobilization, pain, and decreased function. Our goal was to evaluate the amount of sick leave after surgery for 2 common CMC1 arthroplasty procedures. Methods: Using registry data from the Skåne region of southern Sweden, cross-linked with employment data showing p
Crystallization of Zr0.1Ti0.9On mixed oxide by pressurized hot water and its effect on microstructural properties and photoactivity
Pressurized hot water crystallization was applied and optimized for preparation of photoactive Zr0.1Ti0.9On mixed oxide. The effect of individual processing conditions (temperature, pressure and water amount) on (micro)structure, textural, optical, electronic and photocatalytic properties in Acid orange 7 photodegradation of prepared Zr0.1Ti0.9On mixed oxide was examined. It was revealed that whil
The Regional Film Fund as Co-production Crusader - The Case of Film i Väst
A focus in this paper is the issue of possible over-production of European films, as spelled out or implied in a number of reports, chapters, books and doctoral dissertations on European cinema during the last decade. Specifically, the activities of the Swedish/Scandinavian co-producer/regional film fund/public company Film i Väst will come under scrutiny. Among a large range of activities, the fu
DPP-4 is expressed in human pancreatic beta cells and its direct inhibition improves beta cell function and survival in type 2 diabetes
It has been reported that the incretin system, including regulated GLP-1 secretion and locally expressed DPP-4, is present in pancreatic islets. In this study we comprehensively evaluated the expression and role of DPP-4 in islet alpha and beta cells from non-diabetic (ND) and type 2 diabetic (T2D) individuals, including the effects of its inhibition on beta cell function and survival. Isolated is
Lifetime and baseline alcohol intakes and risk of pancreatic cancer in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study
Recent evidence suggested a weak relationship between alcohol consumption and pancreatic cancer (PC) risk. In our study, the association between lifetime and baseline alcohol intakes and the risk of PC was evaluated, including the type of alcoholic beverages and potential interaction with smoking. Within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, 1,283 incident
Patients With Intermittent Claudication and Chronic Widespread Pain Improves in Health-Related Quality of Life After Invasive but Not After Noninvasive Treatment
Background: Intermittent claudication (IC) is traditionally managed with risk factor modification, best medical treatment (BMT), and exercise training. Comorbidities such as diabetes and ischemic heart disease affect both results of invasive treatment and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) negatively. It is unknown how chronic widespread pain (CWP) influences the results of invasive treatment.
Experimental study on bluff-body stabilized premixed flame with a central air/fuel jet
Bluff-body flame holders are commonly employed in many industrial applications. A bluff-body is usually adopted to enhance the downstream mixing of the combustion products and the fresh fuel-air mixtures, thus to improve the flame stability and to control the combustion process. In the present paper, flames stabilized by a conical-shape bluff-body flame holder with a central air/fuel jet were stud
Frames of reference in multibody dynamics
In this paper, a discussion is undertaken concerning the use of so-called floating frames of reference in the calculation of the kinetic and elastic energies of parts in a multibody system. The use of floating frames may simplify the calculation of the elastic energy, although sometimes at the expense of more elaborate expressions for the kinetic energy. These expressions may involve terms that co
Approximation Algorithms for the Geometric Firefighter and Budget Fence Problems
Let R denote a connected region inside a simple polygon, P. By building barriers (typically straight-line segments) in P∖R, we want to separate from R part(s) of P of maximum area. All edges of the boundary of P are assumed to be already constructed or natural barriers. In this paper we introduce two versions of this problem. In the budget fence version the region R is static, and there is an uppe

Humboldt and the Modern German University : An Intellectual History
This book is about the idea of the university in modern Germany. Its primary focus is how the transformation of the Humboldtian tradition gave direction to debates around higher education. By combining approaches from intellectual history, conceptual history and the history of knowledge, the study investigates the ways in which Humboldt’s ideas have been appropriated for various purposes in differThis book is about the idea of the university in modern Germany.
