Widow inheritance and HIV/AIDS in rural Uganda
Despite current efforts to combat HlV/AlDS through behavioural change, ingrained socio-cultural practices such as widow inheritance in south-western Uganda has not changed. Low education, unemployment, dowry, widows' socioeconomic demands and the inheritor's greed for the deceased's wealth, influence widow inheritance. Voluntary counselling and testing is needed for the widows and their inheritors
Photoinduced electron transfer between a carotenoid and TiO2 nanoparticle
The dynamics of photoinduced electron injection and recombination between all-trans-8'-apo-beta-caroten-8'-oic acid (ACOA) and a TiO2 Colloidal nanoparticle have been studied by means of transient absorption spectroscopy. We observed an ultrafast (similar to360 fs) electron injection from the initially excited S-2 state of ACOA into the TiO2 conduction band with a quantum yield of similar to40%. A
Interaction between localized and extended modes of oxygen in silicon
The interaction between localized and extended vibrational modes in solids is of central importance in understanding how local vibrational modes (LVMs) decay into phonons. In this study, we have investigated interstitial oxygen (O-i) in silicon as a model 'laboratory' for such local-extended mode interactions. Using hydrostatic pressure and infrared spectroscopy, we brought the stretch mode of O-1

Weakly bound neutrons and quadrupole response function in the many-body pair correlation of neutron drip line nuclei
A simplified model of the Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov (HFB) equation with surface-type or volume-type pairing is solved in coordinate space with the correct asymptotic boundary conditions. By using the resulting HFB wavefunctions, the low-energy quadrupole (L = 2) response function is studied for the system with weakly bound s and d neutrons. As the binding energy of the neutrons becomes small or appr
Peripheral effects of PTH are not altered after thyroid surgery in euthyroid patients
Background. We have previously found decreased serum levels of both ionized calcium and 1,25(OH)(2)D and an increase in serum phosphate levels at 1 year after hemithyroidectomy. However, basal and stimulated parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretions were not altered. To investigate whether the observed biochemical changes after unilateral thyroid surgery may be due to a relative end-organ resistance to

Forging an Incarnational Theology Two Score Years after Nostra Aetate
Surveying how Christology is formulated in the wake of Nostra Aetate, this paper concentrates on three models: (1) The man became words, words, words; the quest for the historical Jesus has often emphasised the — allegedly unique — teachings of the Nazarene. Its main problem, however, is that the contemporaries of Jesus are no longer presented as his historical context but as his theological contr

Hereditary and acquired angioedema: problems and progress: proceedings of the third C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency workshop and beyond
Hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare but life-threatening condition, manifests as acute attacks of facial, laryngeal, genital, or peripheral swelling or abdominal pain secondary to intra-abdominal edema. Resulting from mutations affecting C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH), inhibitor of the first complement system component, attacks are not histamine-mediated and do not respond to antihistamines or cor

The Pd (100)-(root 5 x root 5)R27 degrees-O surface oxide: A LEED, DFT and STM study
Using low energy electron diffraction (LEED), density functional theory (DFT) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we have re-analyzed the Pd(100)-(root 5 x root 5)R27 degrees-O surface oxide structure consisting, in the most recent model, of a strained PdO(101) layer on top of the Pd(100) surface [M. Todorova et al., Surf. Sci. 541 (2003) 101]. Both, DFT simulations using the Vienna Ab initio
Late-onset postpartum hemorrhage from placental bed subinvolution: a case report
BACKGROUND: Placental bed subinvolution is an underestimated cause of severe, late-onset postpartum hemorrhage. CASE: A case of placental bed subinvolution caused abnormal uterine bleeding in the late postpartum period. Because of difficulties in establishing the diagnosis, massive, intractable and life-threatening uterine hemorrhage occurred, leading to hysterectomy. CONCLUSION: Early recognition
Human hemoglobin adducts following exposure to hexahydrophthalic anhydride and methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride
Hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA) and methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) are highly allergenic compounds used in the chemical industry. The aim of this study was to characterize the protein adducts in erythrocytes following exposure to HHPA and MHHPA. Blood and urine samples were obtained from 51 HHPA- and MHHPA-exposed workers. Erythrocytic proteins from HHPA- and MHHPA-exposed workers we
Growth and capture activities of nematophagous fungi in soil visualized by low temperature scanning electron microscopy
Growth and capture activities of nematophagous fungi in soil were observed using the low temperature scanning electron microscopy technique. The advantages of this sample preparation technique, compared with conventional scanning electron microscopy, are that it does not involve chemical fixation and dehydration of the sample and, therefore, gives a more accurate view of organ isms in soil. Growth
Doppler velocimetry for predicting outcome of pregnancies with decreased fetal movements
Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate umbilical artery (UA) and uterine artery (Ut.A) Doppler velocimetry in a low-risk pregnancy group with decreased fetal movements. Material and methods. Eight hundred and eighty-eight women were examined because of decreased fetal movements. All fetuses were alive on maternal admission. In all cases, UA and Ut.A Doppler velocimetries were performed, as wel
