Greening the welfare state: Confronting the ecological state with the realities of welfare state transformations

In this paper we explore the potential of cross-fertilization between research on welfare state reforms and on efforts to green the state in response to ecological challenges. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the conditions for an ecological state to emerge we relate welfare state studies to green political theory, that provide different conceptions of the ecological state and ways to gr

Using Local Differential Operators to Model Dispersion in Dielectric Media

Dispersion of electromagnetic waves is usually described in terms of an integro-differential equation. In this paper we show that whenever a differential operator can be found that annihilates the susceptibility kernel of the medium, then dispersion can be modeled by a partial differential equation without nonlocal operators.

Modernity and periphery: The sexual modernisation of Greenland

The paper will argue that the centre-periphery dynamics of the modernisation of sexuality is more complex and difficult to grasp than is usually shown in queer studies and gay history. Existing historiography on the emerging of a modern gay and lesbian identity has failed to study the links between different sites for the emergence of a gay and lesbian subculture. Thus, the paper highlights the importance of understanding how political, economical, technological and systems affect and influence actions and strategies underlying an implementation- and regulation process (i.e. law/r

HEP Applications Evaluation of the EDG Testbed and Middleware

Workpackage 8 of the European Datagrid project was formed in January 2001 with representatives from the four LHC experiments, and with experiment independent people from five of the six main EDG partners. In September 2002 WP8 was strengthened by the addition of effort from BaBar and D0. The original mandate of WP8 was, following the definition of short- and long-term requirements, to port experim

Reconsidering the Carpet Paradigm

The influence on painters and writers was thorough and the carpet, now more than just a motive, became a model and instrument for images. This tendency was termed the “carpet paradigm” by Josep
