Semi-empirical atomistic study of point defect properties in BCC transition metals

We have constructed a set of embedded atom method (EAM) potentials for Fe, Ta, W and V and used them in order to study point defect properties. The parametrizations of the potentials ensure that the third order elastic constants are continuous and they have been fitted to the cohesive energies, the lattice constants, the unrelaxed vacancy formation energies and the second order elastic constants.

Individual Identification and Genetic Variation of Lions (Panthera leo) from Two Protected Areas in Nigeria.

This survey was conducted in two protected areas in Nigeria to genetically identify individual lions and to determine the genetic variation within and between the populations. We used faecal sample DNA, a non-invasive alternative to the risky and laborious task of taking samples directly from the animals, often preceded by catching and immobilization. Data collection in Yankari Game Reserve (YGR)

Depression and antidepressants: a Nordic perspective

The Nordic countries are all established welfare states, and there has for some time existed a notion of a distinctive Nordic or Scandinavian welfare state. Considerable differences seem to exist between for example the psychiatric services within, as well as between, the Nordic countries when it comes to history, mental health acts and allocation of resources. Some argue that it is not even possi

Technical design report for the PANDA (AntiProton Annihilations at Darmstadt) Straw Tube Tracker

This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory an

Radiocarbon Wiggle-Match Dating of Bulk Sediments-How Accurate Can it Be?

We used the radiocarbon wiggle-match dating technique to date the varved sediments of Lake Gyltigesjon in southern Sweden with the main aim to construct an accurate chronology covering the period between about 3000 and 2000 cal BP. Wiggle-match dating was applied to bulk sediments to evaluate the possibility of constructing accurate chronologies in the absence of terrestrial plant macrofossils and

A multi layer meander line circular polarization selective structure (MLML-CPSS)

A circular polarization selective structure (CPSS) reflects one handedness of circular polarization and transmits the other. We present a new multilayer structure with significantly improved bandwidth compared to classical solutions, which are typically based on resonant structures. The proposed structure consists of layers of printed metal meander lines interspaced by low-permittivity rigid foams

Understanding Applications of Project Planning and Scheduling in Construction Projects

Construction project life-cycle processes must be managed in a more effective and predictable way to meet project stakeholders’ needs. However, there is increasing concern about whether know-how effectively improves understanding of underlying theories of project management processes for construction organizations and their project managers. Project planning and scheduling are considered as key an

Evaluation of Level of Confidence and Optimization of Roll-back Recovery with Checkpointing for Real-Time Systems

Increasing soft error rates for semiconductor devices manufactured in later technologies enforce the usage of fault tolerant techniques such as Roll-back Recovery with Checkpointing (RRC). As RRC introduces time overhead that increases the completion (execution) time, time constraints (deadlines) might be violated. This is a drawback for a class of computer systems where the correct operation is d

Long-term patient survival in ANCA-associated vasculitis

Background Wegener's granulomatosis and microscopic polyangiitis are antineutrophil cytoplasm antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitides with significant morbidity and mortality. The long-term survival of patients with ANCA associated vasculitis treated with current regimens is uncertain. Objective To describe the long-term patient survival and possible prognostic factors at presentation in an inte

Individual and health facility factors and the risk for obstructed labour and its adverse outcomes in south-western Uganda

Background: Obstructed labour is still a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality and of adverse outcome for newborns in low-income countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of individual and health facility factors and the risk for obstructed labour and its adverse outcomes in south-western Uganda. Methods: A review was performed on 12,463 obstetric records for the year

Sourcing flint from Sweden and Denmark: A pilot study employing non-destructive energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

This article presents the results of a pilot study exploring the feasibility of using non-destructive energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry for chemical sourcing of flint from southern Sweden and eastern Denmark. EDXRF results showed that flint samples from Stevns Klint are all chemically alike on the basis of Si/Ca/Fe and Ca/Fe ratio data, yet they possess markedly different v

Hydrodynamic radius determination with asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation using decaying cross-flows. Part 1. A theoretical approach.

Direct determination of hydrodynamic radius from retention time is an advantage of the field-flow fractionation techniques. However, this is not always completely straight forward since non-idealities exist and assumptions have been made in deriving the retention equations. In this study we investigate the effect on accuracy from two factors: (1) level of sophistication of the equations used to de

Towards a Green Energy Economy? A macroeconomic-climate evaluation of Sweden’s CO2 emissions

This paper provides a production and consumption-based empirical macroeconomic-climate assessment of Sweden’s CO2 emissions. The core methodology is based on three complementary quantitative methods, namely energy-economy-environment indicators, econometric analyses, and a multi-regional input output (MRIO) sectoral model. Based on the latest available data (1971–2011), indicators show a sharp dec

Safety and efficacy of inhaled insulin (AERx((R)) iDMS(1)) compared with subcutaneous insulin therapy in patients with Type 1 diabetes: 1-year data from a randomized, parallel group trial

Assessment of the long-term safety and efficacy of liquid inhaled insulin via AERx((R)) insulin Diabetes Management System (iDMS) in a basal/bolus treatment regimen of adults with Type 1 diabetes. Patients were randomized 2 : 1 to prandial inhaled (n = 205) or subcutaneous (s.c.) (n = 99) insulin, plus one/two daily injections of neutral protamine Hagedorn (NPH) insulin for 12 months. The primary

Plant community assembly and biodiversity: a spatio-temporal perspective

Biodiversity, the variety of life at all organisational levels from genes to ecosystems, affects ecosystem processes and therefore the goods and services ecosystems provide. More research is needed to provide new insights into biodiversity changes and the processes that drive these changes, in order to formulate effective policy and conservation measures to stop the ongoing biodiversity loss. In t

Predicting water removal during vacuum dewatering from fundamental fibre property data

Control of the solids content after vacuum dewatering is vital for efficient control and energy use of the paper machine. Dewatering is a complex function of many parameters such as fibre and pulp properties as well as settings on the paper machine and a predictive model for dewatering will require extensive and detailed studies of the occurring physical phenomena. The hypothesis investigated in t

The Global Stratotype Sections and Points for the bases of the Selandian (Middle Paleocene) and Thanetian (Upper Paleocene) stages at Zumaia, Spain

The global stratotype sections and points for the bases of the Selandian (Middle Paleocene) and Thanetian (Upper Paleocene) stages have been defined in the coastal cliff along the Itzurun Beach at the town of Zumaia in the Basque Country, northern Spain. In the hemipelagic section exposed at Zumaia the base of the Selandian Stage has been placed at the base of the Itzurun Formation, ca. 49 m above

In situ analysis of Na and K in a laminar premixed flame by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) was used to in situ monitor the concentration of alkali elements in combustion environments. Particular efforts were made to optimize the temporally resolved spectra of Na and K elements. Calibration curves were constructed by relating the intensities of the specific lines to the corresponding elemental concentrations. The detection limits of Na and K ele
