This 1 sonata uses simple generative principles, to develop networks of relatively high complexity in which intuition actively participates to produce an output with a certain degree of activity and acoustic nonlinearity.Albert-László Barabási, from the introduction to his book titled Linked: the new science of networks, “Just as diverse humans share skeletons that are almost indistinguishable,

Oestrogens are important sex hormones central to health and disease in both genders that have protective effects on the cardiovascular and metabolic systems. These hormones act in complex ways via both genomic and non-genomic mechanisms. The genomic mechanisms are relatively well characterized, whereas the non-genomic ones are only beginning to be explored. Two oestrogen receptors (ER), ER alpha a

How are brand characters portrayed in Formula 1 teams? The purpose of this study is to understand and describe brands and their brand characters within the experience market of Formula 1. We aim to contribute with conclusions regarding brand characters and their differentiation within the field of research of experience markets. The study adopts a qualitative and abductive approach, grounded in in

The cannabinoid 1 receptor (CB1R) has a well-established role in appetite regulation. Central CB1R antagonists, notably rimonabant, induced weight loss and improved the metabolic profile in obese individuals, but were discontinued due to psychiatric side-effects. The CB1R is also expressed peripherally, where its effects include promotion of liver fat accumulation, which consumes ATP. Type 2 diabe

Aim: To compare two different regimens for children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes: hospital-based care or hospital-based home care (HBHC), referring to specialist care in a home-based setting. Method: The trial took place in Sweden with a randomized controlled design and included 60 children, aged 3-15 years. After 2-3 days with hospital-based care, children were randomized to either continue

The human seminal vesicles secrete two proteins, semenogelin I and semenogelin II, at very high concentrations. It has previously been shown that the cotton-top tamarin (Sanguinus oedipus), a New World monkey, is lacking the semenogelin II gene. We have now determined the nucleotide sequence of DNA located 5--13 kilobases (kb) downstream of the tamarin semenogelin I gene---a region that in man is

Children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are at increased risk of celiac disease (CD). The replacement of insulin in T1D, and the exclusion of gluten in CD, are lifelong, burdensome treatments. Compliance to a gluten-free diet (GFD) in children with CD is reported to be high, while compliance in children with both diseases has scarcely been studied. To examine compliance to a GFD in children with both

Spurred by availability of automatic segmentation software, in vivo MRI investigations of human hippocampal subfield volumes have proliferated in the recent years. However, a majority of these studies apply automatic segmentation to MRI scans with approximately 1 × 1 × 1 mm3 resolution, a resolution at which the internal structure of the hippocampus can rarely be visualized. Many of these studies

This study evaluates a clinically applicable lentiviral vector for treatment of Gaucher disease type 1. Hematopoietic stem cells transduced with the vector and transplanted into a mouse model successfully halted or reversed pathology. These data were used as proof-of-concept for regulatory filing enabling the commencement of an international phase 1/2 clinical trial.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Accurate prediction of disease progression in individuals with pre-symptomatic type 1 diabetes has potential to prevent ketoacidosis and accelerate development of disease-modifying therapies. Current tools for predicting risk require multiple blood samples taken during an OGTT. Our aim was to develop and validate a simpler tool based on a single blood draw.METHODS: Models to predi

Cyclin dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) has long been known to drive the cell cycle and to regulate the division and differentiation of cells. Apart from its role in mitosis regulation, it also exerts multiple functions as a protein kinase, including engagement in cell death, possibly via a cell cycle-independent mechanism. The latter is suggested, since CDK1 re-expression can be found in non-dividing an

AimTimeline of atherosclerosis in children with type 1 diabetes is unknown. We aimed to investigate if familial risk of type 1 diabetes is associated with pro-atherosclerotic changes.MethodsYoung first-degree relatives to patients with paediatric type 1 diabetes and sex and age matching controls were enrolled at Skåne University Hospital, Sweden between 2006 and 2015. Conventional lipids, human le

Neutron-rich nuclei beyond N = 126 in the lead region were populated by fragmenting a 238U beam at 1 GeV A on a Be target and then separated by the Fragment Separator (FRS) at GSI. Their isomeric decays were observed, enabling study of the shell structure of neutron-rich nuclei around the Z=82 shell closure. Some preliminary results are reported in this paper.

In many design situations the acceptable performance of structures is defined by serviceability requirements. To estimate the probability of serviceability failure three main design aspects should be considered: (1) the relevant exposures, (2) the structural response and (3) the performance criteria. This thesis presents background information and new findings on structural serviceability related
