Column perfusion of mouse pancreatic islets was used to study the ability of amino acids and their methyl esters to influence insulin release and activate islet glutamate dehydrogenase activity. In the absence of L-glutamine, L-serine and the methyl ester of L-phenylalanine, but neither L-phenylalanine nor L-serine methyl ester, stimulate insulin secretion. In the presence of L-glutamine, however,

Work rate has a direct impact on the systolic blood pressure (SBP) during aerobic exercise, which may be challenging in the evaluation of the SBP response in athletes reaching high work rates. We aimed to investigate the exercise SBP response in endurance athletes in relation to oxygen uptake (VO2), work rate and to recent reference equations for exercise SBP in the general population. Endurance a

Introduction: Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) is a mouse model for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and is induced after immunization with type II collagen (CII). CIA, like RA, is an autoimmune disease leading to destruction of cartilage and joints, and both the priming and inflammatory phases have been suggested to be dependent on proteases. In particular, the cysteine proteases have been proposed to b

Background: Allergy and asthma are closely linked. Inhalation of allergen induces an early allergic response (EAR) within the airways of allergic asthmatic subjects, which is followed by a late allergic response (LAR) in approximately 50% of the subjects. The LAR is defined as a drop in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) from baseline usually occurring 4-8 hours after exposure and is beli

pH is an important parameter affecting heavy metal toxicity in soil. Bacterial and fungal growth, and respiration, during 60 days were determined in response to Cu additions (up to 32 mmol Cu kg-1 soil) in four soils with pH varying between 4.5 and 7.8. We hypothesized that at higher pH the toxic effect of Cu would decrease. In soil with pH 7.8, no negative effects on microbial growth were found u

True geese are members of the bird family Anatidae which contain many waterfowl spe-cies with high relevance as natural hosts of Avian Influenza Virus (AIV). The closely re-lated mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is the main host of AIV and has a robust immune sys-tem which is also the best understood among the Anatidae. Previous studies have shown that some species of geese are more susceptible to AIV

Implants of commercially pure titanium and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were inserted in the rat abdominal wall for 1, 6 or 12 wk. The foreign body reaction was evaluated by immunohistochemical quantification of monocytes/macrophages and by the thickness of the foreign-body capsule. At all time intervals, the majority of interfacial cells were ED1-positive while ED2-positive cells were localized

This article is a follow-up of Alvesson and Karreman (2011a), which was in itself a follow-up of Alvesson and Karreman (2000), and a response to a critique of the former by Hardy and Grant (2012). The critique is addressed directly and the logic behind it investigated critically. The article also addresses wider concerns regarding the politics of research and publishing and the conditions of criti
