Cycle distributions for Gaussian waves - Exact and approximative results

Wave cycle distributions are notoriously difficult to calculate. Available analytic approximations, like those suggested by Longuet-Higgins (1983) and Cavanie, Arhan and Ezraty (1976) make use only of a few spectral moments, and are unreliable for moderate waves. To find distributions under general spectrum shape and parameters one has to use efficient numerical algorithms based on high-dimensiona

The History of African Development

The History of African Development aims to draw experts in the field of African History and African Development Studies together around an open access textbook for African teachers and undergraduate students. The textbook is reaching out to all African and non-African scholars willing to contribute a concise chapter (ca. 5000 words). The chapters describe and explain various aspects of historical

Autobiography and the psychological study of religious lives

This volume positions itself on the cutting edge of two fields in psychology that enjoy rapidly increasing attention: both the study of human lives and some core domains of such lives as religion and spirituality are high on the agenda of current research and teaching. Biographies and autobiographies are being approached in new ways and have become central to the study of human lives as an object

Vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates: Finite-size effects and the thermodynamic limit

For a weakly interacting Bose gas rotating in a harmonic trap we relate the yrast states of small systems (that can be treated exactly) to the thermodynamic limit (derived within the mean-field approximation). For a few dozens of atoms, the yrast line shows distinct quasiperiodic oscillations with increasing angular momentum that originate from the internal structure of the exact many-body states.

The Dark Side of Facebook: Semantic Representations of Status Updates Predict the Dark Triad of Personality

sing Latent Semantic Analysis, we quantified the semantic representations of Facebook status updates of 304 individuals in order to predict self-reported personality. We focused on, besides Neuroticism and Extraversion, the Dark Triad of personality: Psychopathy, Narcissism, and Machiavellianism. The semantic content of Facebook updates predicted Psychopathy and Narcissism. These updates had a mor

Acute otitis media in children-current treatment and prevention.

Acute otitis media (AOM) is the most common bacterial infection in children and has a very varied clinical spectrum, ranging from spontaneous resolutions to serious complications. The effect of antibiotics in AOM depends on the chosen outcome, but has been shown to reduce pain somewhat, and have a greater beneficial effect in severe cases of AOM. Today, not all episodes of AOM are treated with ant

Full-scale in-line hydrolysis and simulation for potential energy and resource savings in activated sludge – a case study

The potential effects of altering primary settlers during biological in-line hydrolysis and converting a nitrifying activated sludge process into a partial pre-denitrification process for the purpose of resource conservation were evaluated. A full-scale primary sludge hydrolysis experiment was performed at a wastewater treatment plant and implemented in a dynamic modelling tool based on ASM2d. The

On a coloured tree with non i.i.d. random labels

We obtain new results for the probabilistic model introduced in Menshikov et al. (2007) and Volkov (2006) which involves a dd-ary regular tree. All vertices are coloured in one of dd distinct colours so that dd children of each vertex all have different colours. Fix d2d2 strictly positive random variables. For any two connected vertices of the tree assign to the edge between them a label which has

Improved microscopical diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in developing countries

The diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) relies on the bacteriological examination of sputum. However, microscopy of smears made directly from sputum has a low sensitivity and there is an urgent need for improved methods. We have compared microscopy of smears made directly from sputum with microscopy after liquefaction of sputum with household bleach (NaOCl) and concentration of bacteria by ce

Electrolytes based on LiClO4 and branched PEG-boronate ester polymers for electrochromics

Structure-property relationships of polymers incorporating Lewis acidic boron in their branched chain architecture were investigated as a function of LiClO4 salt concentration. The polymers were synthesised from boron trioxide, and different poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) and monomethyl ether end-capped PEGs. The PEG-boronate ester polymers based on PEGs having molecular weights equal to, or below,

Assessing phonologies in bilingual Swedish-Arabic children with and without language impairment

Ten Swedish-Arabic children with severe language impairment (LI) and 10 matched controls were tested with Swedish and Arabic phonology tests. The children with severe LI displayed significantly more of both syntagmatic and paradigmatic processes in both languages. The results are also discussed in relation to monolingual children in Swedish and Arabic, both children with a normal language developm
