Genome-wide association study identifies 32 novel breast cancer susceptibility loci from overall and subtype-specific analyses

Breast cancer susceptibility variants frequently show heterogeneity in associations by tumor subtype1-3. To identify novel loci, we performed a genome-wide association study including 133,384 breast cancer cases and 113,789 controls, plus 18,908 BRCA1 mutation carriers (9,414 with breast cancer) of European ancestry, using both standard and novel methodologies that account for underlying tumor het

Exploring the light-induced dynamics in solvated metallogrid complexes with femtosecond pulses across the electromagnetic spectrum

Oligonuclear complexes of d4-d7 transition metal ion centers that undergo spin-switching have long been developed for their practical role in molecular electronics. Recently, they also have appeared as promising photochemical reactants demonstrating improved stability. However, the lack of knowledge about their photophysical properties in the solution phase compared to mononuclear complexes is cur

Electron channelling : challenges and opportunities for compositional analysis of nanowires by TEM

Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy in a transmission electron microscope is often the first method employed to characterize the composition of nanowires. Ideally, it should be accurate and sensitive down to fractions of an atomic percent, and quantification results are often reported as such. However, one can often get substantial errors in accuracy even though the precision is high: for nanowir

Influence of cBN content, Al2O3 and Si3N4 additives and their morphology on microstructure, properties, and wear of PCBN with NbN binder

Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tool materials with NbN binder without additives and PCBN with Al2O3 or Si3N4 micropowder and whisker additives were manufactured and compared. PCBN materials with Si3N4 whisker reinforcement have the best mechanical properties of all the evaluated materials. Composites reinforced with Al2O3 whiskers have the lowest fracture toughness. However, Al2O3 whis

A machine learning based approach for determining the stress-strain relation of grey cast iron from nanoindentation

Apart from microhardness and elastic modulus, the stress-strain relation is another important characteristic that more and more scholars have been trying to extract from nanoindentation. With the development of artificial intelligence and computer technology, a machine learning based method is proposed in this paper to extract stress-strain curve of grey cast iron using sharp nanoindentation. Serum Iodine and Breast Cancer Risk : A Prospective Nested Case-Control Study Stratified for Selenium Levels

BACKGROUND: Iodine has been suggested to protect against breast cancer, but there are no epidemiologic studies on individual risk. An interesting finding is that in areas where the exposure to both selenium and iodine are high (e.g., Japan), the risk of breast cancer is lower than in areas where selenium is high and iodine low (e.g., United States), or in areas where both are low (e.g., Northern E

Allergic respiratory disease care in the COVID-19 era : A EUFOREA statement

Spring and Summer 2020 are unique in that the challenges of care for those suffering from pollen allergy coincide with the COVID-19 pandemic. Several considerations are important to allow optimal care of allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma and hence prevention of coronavirus spread through sneezing, rhinorrhoea, and coughing. This compact overview of recommendations by the EUFOREA expert teams on al

Education and health : Long-run effects of peers, tracking and years

We investigate two parallel school reforms in Sweden to assess the long-run health effects of education. One reform only increased years of schooling, while the other increased years of schooling but also removed tracking leading to a more mixed socioeconomic peer group. By differencing the effects of the parallel reforms we separate the effect of de-tracking and peers from that of more schooling.

Sintering of cBN Based Materials with a TaC Binder for Cutting Tool Application

Abstract: Ceramic matrix composites based on cubic boron nitride with a TaC binder phase are sintered under conditions of high pressure and high temperature. The sintering is carried out in a high-pressure apparatus of the toroid type in the temperature range of 1450–2450°C. It is shown that a chemical reaction between components of the mixture with the formation of TaB2 takes place at a sintering

Magnetic-Field-Independent Subgap States in Hybrid Rashba Nanowires

Subgap states in semiconducting-superconducting nanowire hybrid devices are controversially discussed as potential topologically nontrivial quantum states. One source of ambiguity is the lack of an energetically and spatially well defined tunnel spectrometer. Here, we use quantum dots directly integrated into the nanowire during the growth process to perform tunnel spectroscopy of discrete subgap

Can we break the symmetry along the polarization axis in photoionization?

Photoionization is a fundamental process in which an electron is emitted from an atom. The emission is traditionally considered to be symmetric with respect to the polarization axis, unless it is temporally confined to a period shorter than an optical cycle time. We demonstrate that this symmetry can still be broken by combining a train of a few attosecond pulses and a dressing laser field. The li

Cerebroplacental ratio as predictor of adverse perinatal outcome in the third trimester

Introduction: Fetal growth restriction is associated with adverse perinatal outcome and the clinical management of these pregnancies is a challenge. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) to predict adverse perinatal outcome in high-risk pregnancies in the third trimester. Another aim was to study whether the CPR has better predictive value than its

Prenatal methylmercury exposure and DNA methylation in seven-year-old children in the Seychelles Child Development Study

BACKGROUND: Methylmercury (MeHg) is present in fish and is a neurotoxicant at sufficiently high levels. One potential mechanism of MeHg toxicity early in life is epigenetic dysregulation that may affect long-term neurodevelopment. Altered DNA methylation of nervous system-related genes has been associated with adult mental health outcomes.OBJECTIVE: To assess associations between prenatal MeHg exp

Fully symmetric dispersionless stable transmission-grating Michelson interferometer

Michelson interferometers have been routinely used in various applications ranging from testing optical components to interferometric time-resolved spectroscopy measurements. Traditionally, plate beamsplitters are employed to redistribute radiation between the two arms of an interferometer. However, such an interferometer is susceptible to relative phase fluctuations between the two arms resulting

First ptychographic X-ray computed tomography experiment on the NanoMAX beamline

Ptychographic X-ray computed tomography is a quantitative three-dimensional imaging technique offered to users of multiple synchrotron radiation sources. Its dependence on the coherent fraction of the available X-ray beam makes it perfectly suited to diffraction-limited storage rings. Although MAX IV is the first, and so far only, operating fourth-generation synchrotron light source, none of its e

Automatic identification of poorly performing substations and meter devices : The future of district heating

The district heating sector in Sweden is today facing several challenges due to competition from other heating alternativesas well as decreasing heat demand in buildings. To increase its competitiveness, the district heating companieshave to find ways to keep their production costs at a more or less constant level. One way of doing this is to increasethe efficiency of the district heating systems. The district heating sector in Sweden is today facing several challenges due to competition from other heating alterna-tives as well as decreasing heat demand in buildings. InAs-oxide interface composition and stability upon thermal oxidation and high-k atomic layer deposition

Defects at the interface between InAs and a native or high permittivity oxide layer are one of the main challenges for realizing III-V semiconductor based metal oxide semiconductor structures with superior device performance. Here we passivate the InAs(100) substrate by removing the native oxide via annealing in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) under a flux of atomic hydrogen and growing a stoichiometry co

Is familial risk for depression confounded by individual and familial socioeconomic factors and neighborhood environmental factors? A 7-year follow-up study in Sweden

Family history of depression is an important risk factor for depression. The aim of this study was to examine whether the effect of family history of depression is confounded by individual and familial socioeconomic factors (i.e., country of origin, educational attainment, family income and mobility) and neighborhood environmental factors (i.e., neighborhood deprivation and neighborhood social cap

Wurtzite GaAs Quantum Wires : One-Dimensional Subband Formation

It is of contemporary interest to fabricate nanowires having quantum confinement and one-dimensional subband formation. This is due to a host of applications, for example, in optical devices, and in quantum optics. We have here fabricated and optically investigated narrow, down to 10 nm diameter, wurtzite GaAs nanowires which show strong quantum confinement and the formation of one-dimensional sub
