Influence of fuel ethanol content on primary emissions and secondary aerosol formation potential for a modern flex-fuel gasoline vehicle

The effect of fuel ethanol content (10, 85 and 100 %) on primary emissions and on subsequent secondary aerosol formation was investigated for a Euro 5 flex-fuel gasoline vehicle. Emissions were characterized during a New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) using a comprehensive setup of high time-resolution instruments. A detailed chemical composition of the exhaust particulate matter (PM) was studied u

Physiological acclimation dampens initial effects of elevated temperature and atmospheric CO2 concentration in mature boreal Norway spruce

Physiological processes of terrestrial plants regulate the land-atmosphere exchange of carbon, water, and energy, yet few studies have explored the acclimation responses of mature boreal conifer trees to climate change. Here we explored the acclimation responses of photosynthesis, respiration, and stomatal conductance to elevated temperature and/or CO2 concentration ([CO2]) in a 3-year field exper

Neonatal delivery weight and risk of future maternal diabetes

Objective: To investigate associations between neonatal delivery weight and future risk of maternal type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Methods: Data included in the Swedish Medical Birth Registry and Swedish National Diabetes Registry were merged to include all women born during 1930–1989; patients with pre-existing diabetes or gestational diabetes were excluded. Cox regression analyses were performed to

An Area-Efficient On-Chip Memory System for Massive MIMO Using Channel Data Compression

Massive multiple-input-multiple-output has proven to deliver improvements in both spectral and transmitted energy efficiency. However, these improvements come at the cost of critical design challenges for the hardware implementation due to the huge amount of data that has to be processed immediately, especially the storage of large channel state information (CSI) matrices. This paper presents an o

Phosphorylation of a Disordered Peptide - Structural Effects and Force Field Inconsistencies

Phosphorylation is one of the most abundant types of post-translational modifications of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). This study examines the conformational changes in the 15-residue-long N-terminal fragment of the IDP statherin upon phosphorylation, using computer simulations with two different force fields: AMBER ff99SB-ILDN and CHARMM36m. The results from the simulations are compar

Integrating All-Atom and Coarse-Grained Simulations - Toward Understanding of IDPs at Surfaces

We present a scheme for transferring conformational degrees of freedom from all-atom (AA) simulations of an intrinsically disordered protein (IDP) to coarse-grained (CG) Monte Carlo (MC) simulations using conformational swap moves. AA simulations of a single histatin 5 peptide in water were used to obtain a structural ensemble, which is reweighted in a CGMC simulation in the presence of a negative

Measurement of blood flow in rat liver with Xenon-133.

The blood flow in rat liver was measured with Xe-133. Three techniques for administering the activity to the liver were employed: injection via the portal vein, via the hepatic artery, and directly into the liver parenchyma. Use of intraparenchymal injection of Xe-133 gave 60% higher flow values than by portal or arterial injection techniques. Mean flow index (k1) was for portal injection 0.52, fo

Spontaneous Formation of Cushioned Model Membranes Promoted by an Intrinsically Disordered Protein

In this article, it is shown that by exposing commonly used lipids for biomembrane mimicking studies, to a solution containing the histidine-rich intrinsically disordered protein histatin 5, a protein cushion spontaneously forms underneath the bilayer. The underlying mechanism is attributed to have an electrostatic origin, and it is hypothesized that the observed behavior is due to proton charge f

Feature-Oriented Control Programming

Managing variability in control programs often requires code duplication or that all variants are anticipated in advance. In this paper, we present a new approach to obtaining modular functionality reuse across variants. Using the language mechanisms diagram inheritance and connection interception, a feature model and an interactive feature-selection wizard can be automatically derived from the co

Adsorption of Fibrinogen on Silica Surfaces-The Effect of Attached Nanoparticles

When a biomaterial is inserted into the body, proteins rapidly adsorb onto its surface, creating a conditioning protein film that functions as a link between the implant and adhering cells. Depending on the nano-roughness of the surface, proteins will adsorb in different amounts, with different conformations and orientations, possibly affecting the subsequent attachment of cells to the surface. Th

New Perspectives on Braided Convolutional Codes

Braided convolutional codes (BCCs) are a type of parallel-concatenated convolutional code in which the parity outputs of one component encoder are fed back and used as inputs to the other component encoder at the succeeding time unit. In this paper, we review the published results on BCCs that have appeared in the literature over the past ten years and present a unified view of BCCs in the context

On the Block Error Rate Performance of Spatially Coupled LDPC Codes for Streaming Applications

In this paper, we study the block error rate (BLER) performance of spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC- LDPC) codes using a sliding window decoder suited for streaming applications. Previous studies of SC-LDPC have focused on the bit error rate (BER) performance or the frame error rate (FER) performance over the entire length of the code. Here, we consider protograph-based constructions

Comparison of two SiGe 2-stage E-band Power Amplifier Architectures

This paper presents simulation and measurement results for two 2-stage E-band power amplifiers implemented in 0.18um SiGe technology with fT = 200 GHz. To increase the power gain by mitigating the effect of the base-collector capacitance, the first design uses a differential cascode topology with a 2.7 V supply voltage. The second design instead uses capacitive cross-coupling of a differential com
