Pickering emulsions based on CaCl2-gelatinized oat starch

The aim of this study was to investigate calcium chloride-induced gelatinization of oat starch, and its effects on the properties of oat starch-based Pickering emulsions. The starch granules were gelatinized in CaCl2 for up to 24 h and the results indicate that the salt-induced gelatinization of oat granules is not a surface phenomenon, as gelatinization and dissolution of the whole starch granule

Early glymphatic failure in AppNL-F knock-in mice is linked to parenchymal border macrophages loss

Amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Cerebral Aβ deposition is attenuated by a functional glymphatic system, in which perivascular entry of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and its exchange with interstitial fluid mediate solute clearance. Parenchymal border macrophages (PBMs), positioned along glymphatic pathways, are emerging as important players for glymphatic clearance. H

“Jag vet att jag bara är en rad i ett schema, inget annat” - En kvalitativ intervjustudie om hur journalister/medarbetare inom journalistbranschen upplever de prekära anställningarna

Journalistbranschen är präglad av prekära anställningar där bland annat arbetsgivarna anställer systematiskt enligt Lagen om anställningsskydd genom så kallade in-och utlasningar. Dessa används genom skapandet av korttidskontrakt i syfte att undvika tillsvidareanställningar. Sämre allmänhälsa, oförmågan att planera en framtid och en instabil ekonomi är några aspekter som framkommit som konsekvenseThe journalism industry is characterized by precarious forms of employment, and employers systematically hire in accordance with the Employment Protection Law (Lagen om anställningsskydd) through so-called “in-och utlasning” a practice by which employers, with the aim of avoiding permanent employment, create short-term contracts. Bad general health, difficulties in planning the future and economic

Effects of atmospheric dispersion on the PSF background level

Atmospheric dispersion represents a relatively overlooked problem in connection with the ultimate quality of ELT images corrected by adaptive optics (AO). The aim of this paper is to evaluate the contribution from atmospheric dispersion to the background level of the point-spread function (PSF). Since proper suppression of this level is important for the prospects for direct exo-planet observation

Why do some sex chromosomes degenerate more slowly than others? The odd case of ratite sex chromosomes

The hallmark of sex chromosome evolution is the progressive suppression of recombination which leads to subsequent degeneration of the non-recombining chromosome. In birds, species belonging to the two major clades, Palaeognathae (including tinamous and flightless ratites) and Neognathae (all remaining birds), show distinctive patterns of sex chromosome degeneration. Birds are female heterogametic

Integrating spatial gene expression and breast tumour morphology via deep learning

Spatial transcriptomics allows for the measurement of RNA abundance at a high spatial resolution, making it possible to systematically link the morphology of cellular neighbourhoods and spatially localized gene expression. Here, we report the development of a deep learning algorithm for the prediction of local gene expression from haematoxylin-and-eosin-stained histopathology images using a new da

Benefits of Investigating the Thermal Component for Moisture Safety in Ventilated Attics

Cold ventilated attics often have mould problems in Sweden. This is valid both for old and sometimes newly built attics. Increased insulation on the attic floor is assumed to increase the problem. To investigate this, numerical 1D models like WUFI or WUFI+ are typically used. These models give results but the physical processes are not so transparent for the user due to the complex numerical techn

Theoretical predictions of structures in dispersions containing charged colloidal particles and non-adsorbing polymers

We develop a theoretical model to describe structural effects on a specific system of charged colloidal polystyrene particles, upon the addition of non-adsorbing PEG polymers. This system has previously been investigated experimentally, by scattering methods, so we are able to quantitatively compare predicted structure factors with corresponding experimental data. Our aim is to construct a model t

Glutathione S-transferase genotype and p53 mutations in adenocarcinoma of the small intestine

Adenocarcinoma of the small intestine (ASI) is a rare disease of unknown aetiology. The glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) enzyme catalyses the detoxification of compounds involved in carcinogenesis of adenocarcinoma of the stomach, colon and lung, including constituents of tobacco smoke. We investigated a possible interaction between the lack of GSTM1 enzyme activity and the carcinogenic compou

Agreement between artificial neural networks and experienced electrocardiographer on electrocardiographic diagnosis of healed myocardial infarction

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnoses of healed myocardial infarction made from the 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) by artificial neural networks and an experienced electrocardiographer. Background. Artificial neural networks have proved of value in pattern recognition tasks. Studies of their utility in ECG interpretation have shown performance exceeding that of conven

CEST, ASL, and magnetization transfer contrast : How similar pulse sequences detect different phenomena

Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST), arterial spin labeling (ASL), and magnetization transfer contrast (MTC) methods generate different contrasts for MRI. However, they share many similarities in terms of pulse sequences and mechanistic principles. They all use RF pulse preparation schemes to label the longitudinal magnetization of certain proton pools and follow the delivery and transfer

Recycling of MSWI-bottom ash in paved constructions in Sweden – A risk assessment

This paper presents results from a risk assessment of recycling pre-treated bottom ash from municipal solid waste incineration as a subbase layer in certain asphalt paved constructions in Sweden. Based on a model for assessing environmental and health risks at contaminated areas, previously developed by the Swedish EPA and by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute, target values for total content and

Knowledge and attitudes to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) - a cross-sectional population survey in Sweden

Aim of the studyRates of bystander CPR are increasing, yet mortality after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains high. The aim of this survey was to explore public knowledge and attitudes to CPR. Our hypotheses were that recent CPR training (< 5 years) would be associated with a high-quality response in a case vignette of OHCA with agonal breathing, and associated with an interest to becom

Phonetic and phonological cues to prediction : Neurophysiology of Danish stød

A corpus study and a combined behavioural and neurophysiological study tested how phonetic and phonological features of the Danish creaky voice feature ‘stød’ influence predictive processing. Being associated with certain word endings, stød and its modal voice counterpart non-stød can cue upcoming speech. Stød has two phases. The first shows phonetic differences in pitch while the second, characte

Reconfigurable multi-access pattern vector memory for real-time orb feature extraction

This work presents an on-chip memory subsystem envisioned for real-time applications performing Oriented FAST and Rotated Brief (ORB) feature extraction for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems. For autonomous navigation of battery-powered devices, feature-based SLAM is a computationally frugal alternative to direct methods. This paper thoroughly analyses ORB multiple memory access
