Visual neurons with different shapes: investigation of the relationship between morphology and function

In this project, morphological differences between motion detector neurons in Drosophila melanogaster were compared and used to speculate regarding their function. This was achieved by comparing properties such as diameter, height, width, bifurcation, asymmetry and terminal degree. To assist in the comparison, neurons were also visualized in 3D to identify structural differences. It was found that

Standardrutterna räknas också på sommaren (sedan1996) meWe present the results of the Swedish Bird Survey, run by the Department of Biology, Lund University, as a part of the National Monitoring Programme of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The results for 2020 include data from: 564 winter point counts in 2019/2020 (45th winter), of which 274 were carried out during the Christmas/New Year count, 210 summer point count routes (46th year) an

Pacemaker implantation following tricuspid valve annuloplasty: A SWEDEHEART study

ObjectiveTricuspid annuloplasty is associated with increased risk of atrioventricular block and subsequent implantation of a permanent pacemaker. However, the exact incidence of permanent pacemaker, associated risk factors, and outcomes in this frame remain debated. The aim of the study was to report permanent pacemaker incidence, risk factors, and outcomes after tricuspid annuloplasty from nation

Areal pressure in grammatical evolution : An Indo-European case study

Typological features can be expected to exhibit the same diachronic development multiple times during the history of a language family, exhibiting what is known variously as recurrence, homoplasy, or drift. This paper seeks to quantify the areal signal shown by recurrent mor- phosyntactic changes across the Indo-European language family. We use 108 morphosyntactic feature variants taken from the DThis article investigates the evolutionary and spatial dynamics of typological characters in 117 Indo-European languages. We partition types of change (i.e., gain or loss) for each variant according to whether they bring about a simplification in morphosyntactic patterns that must be learned, whether they are neutral (i.e., neither simplifying nor introducing complexity) or whether they introduce

Working with local communities - Challenges and opportunities

11 december 2025 13:00 till 14:00 | Seminarium Open, digital seminar Seminar Lise Byskov Herslund will present insights from research projects focused on local collective action in both urban climate change adaptation and rural development. The presentation will explore key questions such as:How can we best engage with local communities?Who are considered local communities? What roles can they play

Medical Molecular Biology

PI Yvonne Ceder Our researchProstate cancer is the most common cancer in men in industrialized countries, and the manifestation of distant metastasis is the major cause of cancer-related deaths in these men. Our research aims to deduce the role of post transcriptional regulation in prostate cancer initiation and progression. The current focus of our research is on RNA editing and m6A modification

Tumor Cell Biology

PI Christer Larsson Our researchOur aims are to identify and understand mechanisms regulating breast cancer cell death and how inflammatory signaling can be induced and influence breast cancer progression. We specifically study Smac mimetics, small molecules mimicking the effect of the pro-apoptotic protein Smac. We investigate determinants of Smac-responsiveness and ways to circumvent resistance

Brain Tumor Biology

PI Alexander Pietras BackgroundGlioblastoma multiforme (GBM) the highest-grade glioma and deadliest brain tumor occurs in pediatric as well as adult patients. Despite aggressive treatment with surgery, irradiation and sometimes chemotherapy, tumors invariably recur as incurable lesions. Tumor cells with stem cell characteristics are thought to be responsible for therapeutic resistance in brain tum

Experimental Oncology

PI Kristian Pietras Our researchOur aim is to molecularly map support functions performed by the various cell types comprising the tumor microenvironment. We believe that decisive treatment benefit can only be achieved by targeting several of the cell types that collectively sustain tumor growth. Importantly, the cellular networks within tumors cannot be studied in isolation. Thus, our work ranges

Foster Care on the Market - Social Workers' Feeling Rules and Actions in Conflict

This presentation focuses the emotional dilemmas of social workers who recruit and assess foster parents, in a context increasingly defined by market dynamics. Following privatization paralleled with increasing need for childcare, private and public actors today compete to contract potential foster parents in Sweden. Forskare, jägare, kolonisatör

Forskare, jägare, kolonisatör examines Tierleben, German naturalist Alfred Brehm's magnum opus, with the purpose of discussing the work's relationship to colonial attitudes towards Africa prevalent in Europe at the time of its writing. The focus has been in examining how the nature of Africa, the European colonial presence and the relationship between European, African and animal are depic

LOVE COURAGE STRENGTH AND DESIRE

Today it is no news that there exists social exclusion and vulnerable groups of people in our cities and all around our country. This is often connected to preconceptions about certain areas. I can see in the face of us people hope of future, dreams and goals. But when and how are we given the opportunity to, irrespective of our knowledge or background, together affect and influence our surroundin

A Tetra-Nitrato Complex of Platinum(II), Synthesis and Crystal Structure of K2[Pt(NO3)4].1/2H2O

K2[Pt(NO3)4]·Full-size image (<1 K)H2O was prepared from ca 0.4 M solutions of platinum(II) perchlorate in perchloric acid by addition of KHCO3 and KNO3. Its crystal structure was determined from X-ray intensity data collected with a CAD-4 diffractometer. Monochromatic MoKα-radiation was used. The space group is I4/m with Z = 4; a = 7.5277(4) and c = 20.470(3) Å. The refinement converged to R = 0.
