No Place Like Home: Home Bias and Environmental Concern in the European Union

This research paper analyzes the effect of growing environmental concern on home bias in the European Union. Using the latest release of the International Trade and Production Database for Estimation, for the years 2002-2016, the home bias is estimated with the gravity model of trade. The Eurobarometer “Public Opinion in the European Union” is used as a proxy for environmental concern over the sam

Efficient product sampling using hierarchical thresholding

Abstract in Undetermined We present an efficient method for importance sampling the product of multiple functions. Our algorithm computes a quick approximation of the product on the fly, based on hierarchical representations of the local maxima and averages of the individual terms. Samples are generated by exploiting the hierarchical properties of many low-discrepancy sequences, and thresholded ag

On Sustainability in Local Energy Planning

Popular Abstract in English Human life in general, depends on having access to useable forms of energy for meeting the basic needs such as preparation of food and provision a comfortable place to live. Energy is also necessary for running the societal services for instance, transportation, health care and education. It is important to know what energy resources are available, how much energy is nEnergy is among the main driving forces needed for sustainable development. Provision of energy services, from the supply side to transmission/distribution and use, must include management, and good management requires tools. Energy planning is a tool for managing the community energy system through assessing and balancing supply and demand. This thesis explains an approach to energy planning whic

Miljöhänsyn och sociala hänsyn i offentlig upphandling - En implementeringsstudie av livsmedelsupphandlingen i Sveriges tre största kommuner

In this case study the author first investigates how environmental and social considerations are being implemented in the Swedish public procurement process. After that the author tries to explain these descriptions using theories on public policy implementation. A distinction is made to the food procurement process in Sweden’s three largest primary municipalities. Through the study of local polic

Between Forests and Climate Change: A Study of Climate Change Relations amongst small-scale Private Forest Owners in southern Sweden

The aim with this thesis is to broaden the understanding of relations surrounding climate change in small-scale private forestry in Sweden by present results from an fieldwork study of a small sample of private forest owners in the south of Sweden. The thesis shows how forest owners are situated within socio-ecological, and political contexts that affect their possibilities to cope with, and shape

Mobile Lab on Sharing in Malmö

Cities are seen as one of the leading forces in making our societies sustainable and resource efficient. The latest trends of sharing homes, cars, bikes, tools and other goods are fast entering our urban lives. The sharing economy is a consumption-production mode in a city, in which value is generated through transactions between peers or organisations that offer access to their idling or underuti

Unraveling the Fabric of Waste in King County: An evaluation of the post-consumer textile waste management system and repair/reuse landscape in King County WA, USA

The environmental and social impacts from the textile value chain have resulted in increased interest and involvement from various stakeholders, one of which being local government. As a means to address the negative impacts of the textile industry, circular economy theory has been adopted by many stakeholders, often using the term ‘circular fashion.’ A critical component of circular fashion is a

Rya gamla kyrka: En studie om relationen mellan landskap och kyrka i Rya socken

How to work for Sustainable Development: the Importance of Implementation at all Levels

The world is increasingly inter-connected and inter-dependent as a result of the flow of goods, migration, capital movements, direct investment and the transfer of technology. To match this, politics also need to be global. The purpose of this study is to propose a policy model that will demonstrate how a country or a region can work for sustainable development and harmonize a concept of governanc

Education for Sustainable Development: A case study of curricular documents from Cuba, France, and Romania

The present thesis purposes to analyse the written curricula for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) of Cuba, France, and Romania – the three countries top-ranked by the United Nations in 2020

Interactive effects of landscape-wide intensity of farming practices and landscape complexity on wild bee diversity

ABSTRACTContextThe local intensity of farming practices is considered as an important driver of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes and its effect on biodiversity has been shown to interact with landscape complexity. But the influence of landscape-wide intensity of farming practices on biodiversity and its combined effect with landscape complexity have been little explored.ObjectiveIn this stuContextThe local intensity of farming practices is considered as an important driver of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes and its effect on biodiversity has been shown to interact with landscape complexity. Characterizing the Structure Tensor Using Gamma Distributions

The structure tensor is a powerful tool describing the local intensity structure of an image or image sequence. In this paper we give a model for the noise distribution of the components of the tensor. In order to do so we have also investigated some properties of the gamma distribution. We show that, given an input image corrupted with Gaussian noise, the noise in the structure tensor can be modeThe structure tensor is a powerful tool describing the local intensity structure of an image or image sequence. Spanish research on avian migration: historical trajectory and future perspectives.

Aim: To value the importance of research on avian migration for the development and current status of Spanish ornithology. Results and Conclusions: Avian migration has always been an outstanding field in ornithology. This assertion is particularly true in Spain, as we illustrate here by discussing the contribution of migration research to both the scientific and historical development of Spanish o

District Heating Development : Prosumers and Bottlenecks

The overarching objective of the studies in this thesis is to solve issues associated with the current district heating development in order to improve the efficiency, and thus the environmental performance, of district heating systems. Examining the protective services of mangroves at a regional scale in Indonesia

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the exposure of the coastal population of Kalimantan, Indonesia changed as a result of coastal mangrove loss and population growth. The change of exposure has therefore been calculated through the loss of mangrove biomass, through deforestation and degradation, over time, as well the increase in population living within 10km2 of disturbed mangroves. TheMangrove ecosystems have the potential to provide a host of ecosystem services to the communities surrounding them. Dense, healthy, networks of mangroves are able to provide a buffer to coastlines against the increasingly frequent and intense storms, expected under the influence of climate change. Additionally, healthy, mangrove ecosystem provide coastal communities with other benefits such as mor

Local environmental governance: Assessing proactive initiatives in building energy efficiency

Ett exempel är energi- och Local governments are increasingly taking the initiative in environmental governance. But can they make any difference in addressing current environmental challenges, which are becoming more and more global in scope? This PhD thesis explores and analyses the outcomes of proactive initiatives in the field of building energy efficiency, and the governance approaches taken. It addresses outcomes both
