Study of Gamma-ray Response of LaBr3:Ce Scintillation Detectors for an Iridium Coincidence Spectrometer

Första generationens spektrometer byggde på en dubbelkoincidens mätt med två HPGe-detektorer, mPresently, the development of the second generation Ir coincidence spectrometer is talking place at the division of Nuclear Physics. There is a large need among geologists to measure trace quantities of Ir in different geological layers and correlate the age of the layer with different large meteorite impacts. The first generation Ir spectrometer was based on a coincidence measured by two HPGe det

Examining the protective services of mangroves at a regional scale in Indonesia

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the exposure of the coastal population of Kalimantan, Indonesia changed as a result of coastal mangrove loss and population growth. The change of exposure has therefore been calculated through the loss of mangrove biomass, through deforestation and degradation, over time, as well the increase in population living within 10km2 of disturbed mangroves. TheMangrove ecosystems have the potential to provide a host of ecosystem services to the communities surrounding them. Dense, healthy, networks of mangroves are able to provide a buffer to coastlines against the increasingly frequent and intense storms, expected under the influence of climate change. Additionally, healthy, mangrove ecosystem provide coastal communities with other benefits such as mor

Detta kan uppfyllas genom att åtgärda otäta väggar och byta ut äldre fönster som medför oönskade värmeförlusteIn order to maintain a good indoor environment, air pollutants such as moisture need to be removed by the ventilation. Among the Swedish Public Health Agency's general advices for ventilation and indoor environment, 3 g/m3 is a guideline value for moisture excess during winter months to not pose a risk to human health. The indoor climate parameters moisture excess, relative humidity and air va

The Paradoxes of Good Intentions : The theory and practice of reforms reflected in teachers´ experiences

Direct and indirect impacts of climate and socio-economic change in Europe : a sensitivity analysis for key land- and water-based sectors

Integrated cross-sectoral impact assessments facilitate a comprehensive understanding of interdependencies and potential synergies, conflicts, and trade-offs between sectors under changing conditions. This paper presents a sensitivity analysis of a European integrated assessment model, the CLIMSAVE integrated assessment platform (IAP). The IAP incorporates important cross-sectoral linkages between

Climate change and the optimal flowering time of annual plants in seasonal environments

Long-term phenology monitoring has documented numerous examples of changing flowering dates during the last century. A pivotal question is whether these phenological responses are adaptive or not under directionally changing climatic conditions. We use a classic dynamic growth model for annual plants, based on optimal control theory, to find the fitness-maximizing flowering time, defined as the sw

Second malignancies after childhood noncentral nervous system solid cancer: results from 13 cancer registries

Children diagnosed with noncentral nervous system solid cancers (NCNSSC) experience several adverse late effects, including second malignant neoplasm. The aim of our study was to assess the risk of specific second malignancies after a childhood NCNSSC. Diagnosis and follow-up data on 10,988 cases of NCNSSC in children (0-14 years) were obtained from 13 registries. Standardized incidence ratios (SI

Online registry of genetic and clinical immunodeficiency diagnostic laboratories, IDdiagnostics.

Primary immunodeficiencies (IDs) are caused by inherited genetic defects leading to intrinsic defects in cells of the immune systems. Most IDs are rare diseases and can be difficult to diagnose because similar symptoms characterize several disorders. Mutation detection is the most reliable method in such cases. These tests are not available at most centers and physicians can have difficulties in f

Partial drying accelerates bacterial growth recovery to rewetting

Fluctuations in soil moisture create drying-rewetting events affecting the activity of microorganisms. Microbial responses to drying-rewetting are mostly studied in soils that are air-dried before rewetting. Upon rewetting, two patterns of bacterial growth have been observed. In the Type 1 pattern, bacterial growth rates increase immediately in a linear fashion. In the Type 2 pattern, bacterial gr

Interactive effects of landscape-wide intensity of farming practices and landscape complexity on wild bee diversity

ABSTRACTContextThe local intensity of farming practices is considered as an important driver of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes and its effect on biodiversity has been shown to interact with landscape complexity. Characterization of Hairdresser Exposure to Airborne Particles during Hair Bleaching.

Respiratory symptoms among hairdressers are often ascribed to the use of bleaching powders that contain persulfate salts. Such salts can act as allergens and airway irritants but the mechanisms behind the negative health effects are not fully known. In order to understand why some hairdressers experience respiratory symptoms during, and after, sessions of hair bleaching, it is of importance to cha

Non-genetic inheritance of induced resistance in a wild annual plant

Non-genetic inheritance, e.g. transgenerational epigenetic effects, has received increasing interest in recent years, particularly in plants. However, most studies have involved a few model species and relatively little is known about wild species in these respects. We investigated transgenerational induced resistance to infection by the devastating oomycete Phytophthora infestans in Solanum physaNon-genetic inheritance, e.g. transgenerational epigenetic effects, has received increasing interest in recent years, particularly in plants.

Housing first has been introduced as a new method in the field of social work, aimed at homelessness in Sweden. The conventional way of tackling homelessness has made it difficult for people in homelessness to access and retain housing. In the hands of the social services, housing programs, has developed into becoming a tool of control and surveillance. As a new approach to the issue of homelessne

Are edible insects the new black? An exploratory study assessing Danish children’s perception of edible insects

The consumption and production of livestock have a negative impact on the environment and climate. In many Western countries, the consumption is particularly high and it is expected to increase globally. This increase will lead to further pressure on already stressed planetary boundaries. Recently edible insects have been proposed to be an alternative to conventional meat, because they have a lowe

Around the 150th anniversary in 1998, historical research showed new interest for the wave of revolutions that swept across Europe in 1848. This research focused on providing a new European frame of interpretation for the events in 1848, questioning the exclusive national historiographical traditions of European history, a field of study already formed by the works of Jean-Baptiste Duroselle in 19

Is Emotional Diversity, and The Difference Between Actual and Ideal Affect a Predictor of Satisfaction with Life and Symptoms of Depression in Sweden and Denmark?

According to traditional research in subjective well-being, the more pleasant emotions we experience, the more satisfied with life we are. But according to newer research, our physical and mental health, including satisfaction with life, also depends on the emotional diversity between the positive and negative emotions we experience, and the difference between the emotions we desire and those we a

Joint routing and wavelength allocation subject to absolute QoS constraints in OBS networks

From the network layer perspective, the problem of burst losses is one of the most challenging problems which restrain the development of optical burst switching (OBS) networks. Indeed, OBS is a buffer-less technology and the consequent lack of guarantees for data delivery may affect significantly the quality of service (QoS) perceived by end users. To overcome these obstacles, dedicated network m
