Exhaustion is differentiable from depression and anxiety: Evidence provided by the SF-36 vitality scale.

Stress-related exhaustion is an increasingly focused phenomenon, although scientifically not yet fully conceptualised. This is perhaps partly due to the fact that the distinction between exhaustion and other already established concepts, such as depression, is not clear. This study explores whether exhaustion can be differentiated from depression and anxiety, by means of introducing the SF-36 vita

Altered beta-Cell Distribution of pdx-1 and GLUT-2 After a Short-Term Challenge With a High-Fat Diet in C57BL/6J Mice.

Mechanisms involved in the islet adaptation to insulin resistance were examined in mice of the C57BL/6J strain challenged with a high-fat (58%) diet for 8 weeks. Basal hyperglycemia commenced after 1 week, whereas hyperinsulinemia evolved after 8 weeks. Glucose elimination after an intravenous glucose challenge (1 g/kg) was significantly delayed after 1, 4, and 8 weeks on the high-fat diet compare

Phosphagens and intracellular pH in intact rabbit smooth muscle studied by 31P-NMR

Phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra (103.2 MHz) were obtained from rabbit portal vein, urinary bladder, and taenia coli smooth muscle. The muscles were mounted isometrically as strips in a horizontal probe and superfused with oxygenated medium at 23 degrees C. Under these conditions the preparations could remain in a stable metabolic state for at least 24 h. The resonances obser

Ray-tracing analysis of diffractive-refractive X-ray optics

Ray-tracing simulations of mistuned sagittal diffractive - refractive X-ray lenses (DRXL) are presented. In this article, firstly the characteristic aberrations for various types of crystal misalignments within one-crystal and four-crystal DRXLs are considered, and the sensitivity of such an optical system to the mutual misalignment of its components is discussed. The simulations reveal that a DRX

Predictive screening for regulators of conserved functional gene modules (gene batteries) in mammals

Background: The expression of gene batteries, genomic units of functionally linked genes which are activated by similar sets of cis- and trans-acting regulators, has been proposed as a major determinant of cell specialization in metazoans. We developed a predictive procedure to screen the mouse and human genomes and transcriptomes for cases of gene-battery-like regulation. Results: In a screen tha

Effects of the taxation of wealth in Athens in the fourth century BC

In the fourth century B.C., Athenians were often accused of avoiding their civic obligations and of concealing their wealth.1 These attested cases show that economic behaviour in classical Athens could be affected by taxation. The purpose of the present study is to systematically explore the economic incentives resulting from the taxation of wealth. The first issue is the effects of the property t

Kinetics of self-assembled island formation: Part I - Island density

We present a rate equation model for self-assembled quantum dot formation, or Stranski-Krastanow growth. The model includes a kinetically defined critical wetting layer thickness and a subsequent wetting layer decomposition. With these rate equations, total island densities can be calculated under varying deposition conditions, i.e., temperature and deposition rate.

Effects of serial and parallel pore nonuniformities: Results from two models of the porous structure

The effects of parallel-type and serial-type pore nonuniformities on the effective diffusivity and the permeability of a porous material were evaluated, constant porosity and constant specific surface area being assumed. Two structural models were considered. In the first model, the porous structure was described as a bundle of cylindrical capillaries penetrating the whole thickness of the materia

DNA-ploidy in advanced gastric carcinoma is less heterogeneous than in early gastric cancer

This analysis of DNA-ploidy heterogeneity in advanced gastric carcinomas is consistent with the hypothesis of the emergence of a single aneuploid cell clone as a crucial mechanism in the progression from early gastric carcinoma to advanced gastric cancer. The prognostic value of DNA-ploidy in gastric cancers has been a matter of controversy. Tumour DNA-ploidy heterogeneity, the presence within the

Method for determination of methane potentials of solid organic waste

A laboratory procedure is described for measuring methane potentials of organic solid waste. Triplicate reactors with 10 grams of volatile solids were incubated at 55 degreesC with 400 ml of inoculum from a thermophilic biogas plant and the methane production was followed over a 50-day period by regular measurements of methane on a gas chromatograph. The procedure involves blanks as well as cellul
