Phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase serves as a metabolic sensor and regulates priming of secretory granules in pancreatic beta cells

Insulin secretion is controlled by the beta cell's metabolic state, and the ability of the secretory granules to undergo exocytosis increases during glucose stimulation in a membrane potential-independent fashion. Here, we demonstrate that exocytosis of insulin-containing secretory granules depends on phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase (PI 4-kinase) activity and that inhibition of this enzyme suppresse

New approaches to the analysis of enzymatically hydrolyzed methyl cellulose. Part 1. Investigation of the influence of structural parameters on the extent of degradation

Six methyl celluloses (MCs), one with a degree of substitution (DS) of 1.32 and five with DS between 1.83 and 1.88, were thoroughly investigated. Monomer composition and methyl distribution in the polymer chain were analyzed after total or partial random hydrolysis and appropriate derivatization with gas chromatography ( GC) and mass spectrometry (MS), respectively, and used as reference data. The

Infection prevention at day-care centres: Feasibility and possible effects of intervention

Objective. To study the effect of an educationally oriented intervention programme, with the recommendations from the National Board of Health and Welfare as a base. Design. A prospective intervention study. Setting. Six day-care centres in Vaxjo, Sweden. Three centres comprised the intervention group and three constituted the control group. Subjects and main outcome measures. The parents and pers

Interventions in hypothetical elder abuse situations suggested by Swedish formal carers.

In Sweden, public attention has not focused on elder abuse. No common view of interventions or organizational repsonsibilities has been developed. The aim of this study was to describe interventions suggested by Swedish formal carers in three hypothetical, typical cases of elder abuse. From one municipality in Sweden, 71 formal carers (district nurses, home service assistants, and general practiti

Risk assessment modelling of microbiology-related solids separation problems in activated sludge systems

This paper proposes a risk assessment model for settling problems of microbiological origin in activated sludge systems (filamentous bulking, foaming and rising sludge). The aim of the model is not to diagnose microbiology-related solids separation problems with absolute certainty but to quantify in dynamic scenarios whether simulated operational procedures and control strategies lead to favourabl

Engineered multidomain cysteine protease inhibitors yield resistance against western flower thrips (Franklinielia occidentalis) in greenhouse trials

Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripiclae), cause very large economic damage on a variety of field and greenhouse crops. In this study, plant resistance against thrips was introduced into transgenic potato plants through the expression of novel, custom-made, multiclomain protease inhibitors. Representative classes of inhibitors of cysteine and aspartic

Psychiatric occupational therapy service--quality assurance

During the last few decades, quality assurance has been a central issue in the societies, both in, for example the industrial area and in healthcare. It is a tool to measure the outcomes of product or service provided. A review of the literature during the last 17 years with respect to quality assurance work in psychiatric occupational therapy indicates that few articles have been published in the

MHC-based patterns of social and extra-pair mate choice in the Seychelles warbler

The existence and nature of indirect genetic benefits to mate choice remain contentious. Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes, which play a vital role in determining pathogen resistance in vertebrates, may be the link between mate choice and the genetic inheritance of vigour in offspring. Studies have shown that MHC-dependent mate choice can occur in mammal and fish species, but little wor

Dynamic light scattering and fluorescence study of the interaction between double-stranded DNA and poly(amido amine) dendrimers

The interaction between a cationic poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimer of generation 4 and double-stranded salmon sperm DNA in 10 mM NaBr solution has been investigated using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. The structural parameters of the formed aggregates as well as the complex formation process were studied in dilute solutions. When DNA is mixed with P

Metapopulation pollination in the deceptive orchid Anacamptis pyramidalis

Pollen dispersal between local plant populations within a range of 6 kin in a geographically defined metapopulation of the lepidopteran-pollinated deceptive orchid Anacamptis pyramidalis was studied on the island Oland in the Baltic Sea. Local A. pyramidalis populations were examined for pollinators, flowering individuals, and fruit set. Population sizes of pollen vector species were estimated usi

Max-stretch reduction for tree spanners

A tree t-spanner T of a graph G is a spanning tree of G whose max-stretch is t, i.e., the distance between any two vertices in T is at most t times their distance in G. If G has a tree t-spanner but not a tree (t - 1)-spanner, then G is said to have max-stretch of t. In this paper, we study the Max-Stretch Reduction Problem: for an unweighted graph G = (V, E), find a set of edges not in E original

Calculation of turbulent fluid flow and heat transfer in ducts by a full Reynolds stress model

A computational method has been developed to predict the turbulent Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in ducts by different turbulence models. The turbulent Reynolds stresses and other turbulent flow quantities are predicted with a full Reynolds stress model (RSM). The turbulent heat fluxes are modelled by a SED concept, the GGDH and the WET methods. Two wall functions are used, one for t

Relation and technique in psychotherapy: Two partly overlapping categories.

The terms relation and technique are frequently used in discussions of what is effective in psychotherapy, but often on the assumption that they refer to conceptually separate phenomena. The present article questions this dichotomy between relationship and technique. This is done on the basis of a theoretical analysis of the concepts of technique and relationship, and the variety of phenomena they

A somatic-mutational process recurrently duplicates germline susceptibility loci and tissue-specific super-enhancers in breast cancers

Somatic rearrangements contribute to the mutagenized landscape of cancer genomes. Here, we systematically interrogated rearrangements in 560 breast cancers by using a piecewise constant fitting approach. We identified 33 hotspots of large (>100 kb) tandem duplications, a mutational signature associated with homologous-recombination-repair deficiency. Notably, these tandem-duplication hotspots were

Efficiency improvements in an industrial steam turbine stage - Part 1

The present work approaches the idea of increasing the efficiency of an industrial steam turbine stage. For this endeavor, an industrial steam turbine stage comprising of prismatic stator and rotor is considered. With the velocity triangles as input, airfoil design is carried out. Firstly, the rotor is redesigned to take care of any incidence issues in the baseline case. In rotor blades, the peak

Model of nearshore random wave transformation : validation against laboratory and field data

This paper presents a two-dimensional numerical model of nearshore random wave transformation with a focus on model calibration and verification with both laboratory and field data. The model is based on the energy balance equation including diffraction and dissipation terms (Mase, 2001). The energy dissipation is determined based on the formulation by Dally et al. (1985), with new expressions for
