Detector and dispersive delay calibration issues in broadband 2D electronic spectroscopy

Precision of two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy can be affected by imprecise calibration of the optical spectrometer and coherence time delay line. This would result in 2D spectral line shapes with twisted phase, where absorptive and dispersive parts of the signal are mixed and unrecoverable. We demonstrate two efficient and easily implementable techniques for precise spectrometer and we

Development and Validation of a Risk Score Predicting Substantial Weight Gain over 5 Years in Middle-Aged European Men and Women

Background: Identifying individuals at high risk of excess weight gain may help targeting prevention efforts at those at risk of various metabolic diseases associated with weight gain. Our aim was to develop a risk score to identify these individuals and validate it in an external population. Methods: We used lifestyle and nutritional data from 53 degrees 758 individuals followed for a median of 5

Social capital, desire to increase physical activity and leisure-time physical activity: A population-based study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations between social capital (trust) and leisure-time physical activity. STUDY DESIGN: The 2004 Public Health Survey in Skåne is a cross-sectional study. METHODS: In total, 27,757 individuals aged 18-80 years answered a postal questionnaire (59% participation). Logistic regression models were used to investigate the associations between trust, desire to incr

Variation in the MC4R Gene Is Associated with Bone Phenotypes in Elderly Swedish Women.

Osteoporosis is characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased fracture risk. Fat mass is a determinant of bone strength and both phenotypes have a strong genetic component. In this study, we examined the association between obesity associated polymorphisms (SNPs) with body composition, BMD, Ultrasound (QUS), fracture and biomarkers (Homocysteine (Hcy), folate, Vitamin D and Vit

Bias Stabilization of Negative Differential Conductance Oscillators Operated in Pulsed Mode

The paper reports on the bias stabilization of a 60-GHz resonant-tunneling diode (RTD)-based oscillator operated in pulsed mode. The oscillator contains an on-chip stabilizing capacitor, enabling the minimum dc consumption possible for such an RTD oscillator to be obtained, since all of the dc current is consumed by the active device. This is achieved without imposing restraints on the output powe

Analysis of strain and stacking faults in single nanowires using Bragg coherent diffraction imaging

Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) on Bragg reflections is a promising technique for the study of three-dimensional (3D) composition and strain fields in nanostructures, which can be recovered directly from the coherent diffraction data recorded on single objects. In this paper, we report results obtained for single homogeneous and heterogeneous nanowires with a diameter smaller than 100 nm, for w

Fast Monolayer Adsorption and Slow Energy Transfer in CdSe Quantum Dot Sensitized ZnO Nanowires

A method for CdSe quantum dot (QD) sensitization of ZnO nanowires (NW) with fast adsorption rate is applied. Photoinduced excited state dynamics of the quantum dots in the case of more than monolayer coverage of the nanowires is studied. Transient absorption kinetics reveals an excitation depopulation process of indirectly attached quantum dots with a lifetime of similar to 4 ns. Photoluminescence

Signatures of Wigner localization in epitaxially grown nanowires

It was predicted by Wigner in 1934 that an electron gas will undergo a transition to a crystallized state when its density is very low. Whereas significant progress has been made toward the detection of electronic Wigner states, their clear and direct experimental verification still remains a challenge. Here we address signatures of Wigner molecule formation in the transport properties of InSb nan

Cost-effectiveness of infliximab versus conventional combination treatment in methotrexate-refractory early rheumatoid arthritis: 2-year results of the register-enriched randomised controlled SWEFOT trial.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incremental cost-effectiveness of infliximab versus conventional combination treatment over 21 months in patients with methotrexate-refractory early rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: In this multicentre, two-arm, parallel, randomised, active-controlled, open-label trial, rheumatoid arthritis patients with <1 year symptom duration were recruited from 15 rheumatology clini

Enhanced sputtering and incorporation of Mn in implanted GaAs and ZnO nanowires

We simulated and experimentally investigated the sputter yield of ZnO and GaAs nanowires, which were implanted with energetic Mn ions at room temperature. The resulting thinning of the nanowires and the dopant concentration with increasing Mn ion fluency were measured by accurate scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nano-x-Ray Fluorescence (nanoXRF) quantification, respectively. We observed a cl

End-stage renal disease and low level exposure to lead, cadmium and mercury; a population-based, prospective nested case-referent study in Sweden

Background: Cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) cause toxicological renal effects, but the clinical relevance at low-level exposures in general populations is unclear. The objective of this study is to assess the risk of developing end-stage renal disease in relation to Cd, Pb, and Hg exposure. Methods: A total of 118 cases who later in life developed end-stage renal disease, and 378 matched

Photovoltaics with Piezoelectric Core-Shell Nanowires

We report on a theoretical discovery of a generic piezoelectric held in strained core shell compound semiconductor nanowires. We show, using both an analytical model and numerical simulations based on fully electroelastically coupled continuum elasticity theory, that lattice-mismatch-induced strain in an epiraxial core shell nanowire gives rise to an internal electric held along the axis of the na

Pulse transmission using leaky lens antenna and RTD-MOSFET wavelet generator

A leaky lens antenna system for short pulse applications is designed, fabricated and characterized. The antenna has very good phase center stability over large bandwidths. The leaky lens antenna is connected to an in-house wavelet generator to transmit 100 ps pulses centered at 57.5 GHz. It is shown that the antenna preserves the reference pulse shape and has very low dispersion.

Inhomogeneous Quenching as a Limit of the Correlation Between Fluorescence Polarization and Conformation of Single Molecules

The photophysical properties of conjugated polymers (CPs) largely depend on the interactions between the CP and its environment. We present a study of two polymers with identical conjugated backbones, bare and insulated, that showed different fluorescence excitation modulation depth histograms. However, the polarization differences are not related to differences in conformation, as commonly believ

Predictors of Psychiatric Hospitalization in Ex-Prisoners With Substance Use Problems: A Data-Linkage Study

This study analyzed predictors of psychiatric hospitalization in ex-prisoners with substance use problems (N = 4,081) assessed with the Addiction Severity Index and followed post-release for hospitalizations with psychiatric diagnoses (including suicide attempts). Thirty-four percent were hospitalized, and in Cox regression, several substance-related variables predicted hospitalization, including

Single chain versus single aggregate spectroscopy of conjugated polymers. Where is the border?

Single chains of conjugated polymers e.g. MEH-PPV (poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) have become interesting objects for single molecule spectroscopy (SMS) studies. However, most of the experiments so far were performed without full awareness of the isolation status of the polymer chains in host matrices. We used steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence methods and 2D p

Fluorescence polarization measures energy funneling in single light-harvesting antennas-LH2 vs conjugated polymers.

Numerous approaches have been proposed to mimic natural photosynthesis using artificial antenna systems, such as conjugated polymers (CPs), dendrimers, and J-aggregates. As a result, there is a need to characterize and compare the excitation energy transfer (EET) properties of various natural and artificial antennas. Here we experimentally show that EET in single antennas can be characterized by 2

Smoking- and alcohol habits in relation to the clinical picture of women with microscopic colitis compared to controls.

Microscopic colitis (MC) induces gastrointestinal symptoms, which are partly overlapping with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), predominately in middle-aged and elderly women. The etiology is unknown, but association with smoking has been found. The aim of this study was to examine whether the increased risk for smokers to develop MC is a true association, or rather the result of confounding factors
