Hip pain in children with cerebral palsy : A population-based registry study of risk factors 11 Medical and Health Sciences 1103 Clinical Sciences

Background: Hip pain is prevalent in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Hip displacement is a known risk factor for hip pain. However, many children do not have displaced hips but still have hip pain and the aetiologies are poorly understood. The aims of this study were to investigate: 1. the prevalence of hip pain related to age, gender, gross motor function, degree of hip displacement and 2. the

Agricultural land use determines functional genetic diversity of soil microbial communities

Microbial communities play a major role in the degradation of soil organic matter (SOM) in soils. Despite its significance, the functional diversity of the highly diverse microbial communities is poorly understood. To address this, we applied a recently developed technique, captured metagenomics, to determine the effects of land-use on the functional genetic diversity of genes involved in the carb

Socioeconomic characteristics and comorbidities of diverticular disease in Sweden 1997–2012

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the association of socioeconomic status and comorbidities with uncomplicated and complicated diverticular disease (DD) in Sweden. Methods: We identified all individuals aged ≥30 years in Sweden diagnosed with DD between 1997 and 2012 using the Swedish National Population and Housing Census and the Hospital Discharge Register. Data were analyzed by multivariabl

Mental health professional experiences of the flexible assertive community treatment model : a grounded theory study

Background: Despite the lack of evidence for effectiveness of the Flexible Assertive Community Treatment (Flexible ACT), the model is considered feasible and is well received by mental health professionals. No current studies have adequately examined mental health professional experiences of working with Flexible ACT. Aims: The aim of this study was to explore mental health professional experience

Understanding cis-normativity in higher education classrooms

Swedish universities are bound by the antidiscrimination act to promote equal learning opportunities for all, irrespective of gender identity and expression. It is thus worrying that The Swedish Federation of LGBTQIA+ Student Organization reports that everyday communication and administrative frameworks based on gender binary assumptions are central problems for students (Lundin, Strömberg, &

Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency (PiZ) may be a risk factor for duodenal ulcer in patients with Helicobacter pylori infection

Abstract BACKGROUND: Most individuals with Helicobacter pylori infection in Western countries have no evidence of peptic ulcer disease (PUD). We therefore assessed the PiZ deficiency variant of the major plasma protease inhibitor alpha1-antitrypsin (alpha1AT) as a risk factor for PUD in H. pylori-infected individuals. METHODS: The cohort comprised 100 patients with endoscopically or surgically pr

Rapid decline of persistent organochlorine pollutants in serum among young Swedish males

To investigate a possible time trend in serum concentrations of persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs), representative samples of the young (median age 18 years) Swedish male population were investigated in the years 2000 and 2004. Due to their low age, these men were assumed not to have reached steady state of body burdens of POPs, why their serum concentrations were considered to represent

Increasing prevalence of overweight, obesity and physical inactivity: two population-based studies 1986 and 1994.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the 1986-1994 trend in obesity, overweight and sedentary leisure-time physical activity status, and the educational gradient in overweight and obesity in the city of Malmö, Sweden. Material/Methods: The public health surveys in Malmö 1986 and 1994 are cross-sectional studies. A total of 4,800 and 5,600 individuals aged 20–80 years were randoml

VariBench: A Benchmark Database for Variations

Several computational methods have been developed for predicting the effects of rapidly expanding variation data. Comparison of the performance of tools has been very difficult as the methods have been trained and tested with different datasets. Until now, unbiased and representative benchmark datasets have been missing. We have developed a benchmark database suite, VariBench, to overcome this pro

Intervention randomized controlled trials involving wrist and shoulder arthroscopy: a systematic review

Background: Although arthroscopy of upper extremity joints was initially a diagnostic tool, it is increasingly used for therapeutic interventions. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are considered the gold standard for assessing treatment efficacy. We aimed to review the literature for intervention RCTs involving wrist and shoulder arthroscopy. Methods: We performed a systematic review for RCTs i

A Sequential Control Language for Industrial Automation

Current market trends for industrial automation are the need for customizable production, shorter time to market, and powerful global competitive pressure. Based on these trends two challenges have been identified: 1) flexible production systems and 2) integration and utilization of devices and software. Applications from both process automation, manufacturing, and robotics have been considered.

Effects of Past and Current Land Use on Biodiversity: from a semi-natural grassland on Öland (Sweden) to a European perspective

Ce travail de thèse examine l'impact de l'utilisation des terres présenteConcerns are increasing about the loss of biodiversity under land use change and how this will affect the ecosystem services provided by natural and semi-natural communities and consequently how this will threaten human well-being. The thesis examines the impact of present and past land use on different aspects of biodiversity; namely species diversity, traits and functional diversity and on ecos

Development of Dual-broadband Rotational CARS for Combustion Diagnostics

The present thesis concerns development and application of dual-broadband rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (DB-RCARS) for temperature and species concentration measurements in combustion processes. Both fundamental development of the technique, including experimental as well as modelling results, and measurements in practical combustion devices were conducted. A code for calcula

Performance modeling and control of web servers

This thesis deals with the task of modeling a web server and designing a mechanism that can prevent the web server from being overloaded. Four papers are presented. The first paper gives an M/G/1/K processor sharing model of a single web server. The model is validated against measurements ands imulations on the commonly usedw eb server Apache. A description is given on how to calculate the necessar

Intravenous boluses of fentanyl, 1 μg kg-1, and remifentanil, 0.5 μg kg-1, give similar maximum ventilatory depression in awake volunteers.

BACKGROUND: /st>The relative respiratory effects of fentanyl and remifentanil, administered as i.v. bolus, have not previously been studied. We determined what remifentanil bolus dose gave the same maximum depression of ventilation as 1 µg kg(-1) of fentanyl. METHODS: /st>Twelve healthy volunteers rebreathed in a system designed to dampen variations in end-tidal carbon dioxide tension so that me

Clinical and demographic data in 75 patients with near-fatal choking episodes

The clinical background and circumstances of 75 patients who had survived a near-fatal choking episode, i.e., had undergone a Heimlich maneuver, oropharyngeal suctioning, or intubation, is reported. Sixty had choked on a solid bolus (often of a complex texture like sandwiches and chicken soup). Four patients had choked on mashed banana. In 30 patients neurologic disease (such as cerebrovascular di

Validation of Guidelines for Genetic Investigation of Myeloid Neoplasms with Germline Predisposition : Results from a Prospective Cohort Study
