Jag är kognitiv zoolog. Det innebär att jag jämför kognitiva funktioner mellan olika djurarter i syfte att förstå hur den kognitiva evolutionen går till. Forskningen leder till ökad förståelse för kognition som biologiskt fenomen.
Jag arbetar med en lång rad arter. Bland annat, kråkfåglar, människoapor, krokodildjur, strutsfåglar och pungdjur. Jag studerar både det som kallas komplex kognition och mer fundamentala funktioner. Ett av mina intressen är att återskapa kognition hos utdöda djur, främst dinosaurier, genom att jämföra kognitionen hos dessa djurs nulevande närmaste släktingar. Ett annat intresse är medvetandefilosofi avseende djur.
Jag är forskningsledare för en rad projekt med olika inriktningar. Jag är också vetenskaplig föreståndare för forskningsanläggningar. Oftast handleder jag doktorander, och undervisar med jämna mellanrum i kognitiv zoologi och annan kognitionsvetenskap.
