Cooperation and Innovative Performance of Firms : Panel Data Evidence from the Czech Republic, Norway and the UK

Using panel micro data fro\m Community Innovation Survey in the Czech Republic, Norway and the UK, we estimate dynamic random effects models, in which the innovation output of firms is the function of their cooperative behaviour and other observed characteristics, while accounting for unobserved heterogeneity. The results indicate that the capacity of firms to build on external domestic linkages i

Homogenization of the Maxwell equations at fixed frequency

The homogenization of the Maxwell equations at fixed frequency is addressed in this paper. The bulk (homogenized) electric and magnetic properties of a material with a periodic microstructure are found from the solution of a local problem on the unit cell by suitable averages. The material can be anisotropic, and satisfies a coercivity condition. The exciting field is generated by an incident field fr

L-edge XANES analysis of photoexcited metal complexes in solution

Ultrafast X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a powerful tool to observe electronic and geometric structures of short-lived reaction intermediates. The ab initiofeff9 code is applied to simulate the Pt L3-edge XANES spectrum of the photocatalytic diplatinum molecule [Pt2(P2O5H2)4]4− and the photo-induced changes that occur therein. The spectra are interpreted within a XAFS-like scattering theoretical

Local Magnetic Suppression of Topological Surface States in Bi2Te3 Nanowires

Locally induced, magnetic order on the surface of a topological insulator nanowire could enable room-temperature topological quantum devices. Here we report on the realization of selective magnetic control over topological surface states on a single facet of a rectangular Bi2Te3 nanowire via a magnetic insulating Fe3O4 substrate. Low-temperature magnetotransport studies provide evidence for local

Pion light-by-light contributions to the muon g − 2

This paper contains some new results on the hadronic light-by-light contribution (HLbL) to the muon g − 2. The first part argues that we can expect large effects from disconnected diagrams in present and future calculations by lattice QCD of HLbL. The argument is based on the dominance of pseudo-scalar meson exchange. In the second part, we revisit the pion loop HLbL contribution to the muon anoma

Density-functional exchange-correlation potentials and orbital eigenvalues for light atoms

Using accurate correlated wave functions calculated earlier by Bunge and by Larsson, we have constructed the Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham density functionals and exchange-correlation (ground-state) potentials and have obtained orbital energy eigenvalues for a number of light atoms by in principle exact numerical algorithms. While the uppermost occupied density-functional eigenvalue always gives an exact ex

The Swedish transport policy objectives show the importance of sustainable transportation. A national bicycle strategy is developed to help achieve the general objective regarding transportation. The bicycle must be included in the whole process with the car coming in second hand. Basic recommendations for cities are to arrange their bicycle network in at least two parts, a main cycle network and

Genom att ha studerat hur Helsingborgs stads miljöförvaltning jobbar med enhetlighetFood safety is a key component in securing people's health and environment in today's society. Within the European Union there are mutual laws regulating the food safety which are to be implemented uniformly in all member states. This study investigates a municipality's work in implementing a uniform handling of public supervision of food safety in Sweden. The examined municipality is

The Resource Curse on a Micro Level: A Case Study of Mining in Malawi

The scramble for Africa’s natural resources has never been more prominent. Rather than contributing to development through means of mineral rents, countries such as Malawi appear to be suffering as result of increased investment from multinational mining corporations. Also known as the resource curse, Malawi’s high natural resource endowment is hurting its citizens, rather than benefitting them. W

Implementation and study of boundary integral operators related to PDE:s in the plane

The method of solving boundary value problems of partial differential equations numerically by first reformulating the problem as a boundary integral equation has many advantages over other methods, but also some unique difficulties. Some of these difficulties stem from problems in evaluating singular or nearly singular integral operators, and solving these difficulties is an active field of resea

The role of inter-specific, micro-habitat and climatic factors on the carbon isotope (delta C-13) variability of a modern leaf assemblage from northern Scandinavia: implications for climate reconstruction

To provide a basis for the interpretation of past climatic conditions from Quaternary leaf records, leaf carbon isotope (delta C-13) results are presented for 12 northern European dwarf-shrub, shrub and tree species growing across a network of 18 sites in northern Scandinavia. The role of micro-habitat (hummock/hollow) on carbon isotope trends is explored in addition to a comparison of the carbon

Modeling diesel spray ignition using detailed chemistry with a progress variable approach

In this work, a progress variable approach is used to model diesel spray ignition with detailed chemistry. The flow field and the detailed chemistry are coupled using the flamelet assumption. A flamelet progress variable is transported by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. The progress variable source term is obtained from an unsteady flamelet library that is evaluated in each grid cell.

Hepatocyte growth factor in cerebrospinal fluid differentiates community-acquired or nosocomial septic meningitis from other causes of pleocytosis.

Due to anatomical restrictions, the inflammatory response to intracerebral bacterial infections exposes swollen brain tissues to pressure and ischemia, resulting in life-threatening damage. Rapid diagnosis and immediate empirical antibiotic therapy is highly important. However, diagnosing meningitis in patients after neurosurgery is complicated, due to brain tissue damage and changes in cerebrospi

Directed self-organization of single DNA molecules in a nanoslit via embedded nanopit arrays

We show that arrays of nanopit structures etched in a nanoslit can control the positioning and conformation of single DNA molecules in nanofluidic devices. By adjusting the spacing, organization and placement of the nanopits it is possible to immobilize DNA at predetermined regions of a device without additional chemical modification and achieve a high degree of control over local DNA conformation

Dynamically evolving Gaussian spatial fields

We discuss general non-stationary spatio-temporal surfaces that involve dynamics governed by velocity fields. The approach formalizes and expands previously used models in analysis of satellite data of significant wave heights. We start with homogeneous spatial fields. By applying an extension of the standard moving average construction we obtain models which are stationary in time. The resulting

X-ray phase-contrast tomosynthesis for improved breast tissue discrimination.

Attenuation-based tomosynthesis has proven to successfully resolve the glandular tissue overlap present in mammography. However, the ability of tomosynthesis to differentiate tumorous and glandular tissue remains limited, due to the small differences in X-ray attenuation in breast tissue. One possibility to overcome this limitation and to further increase the diagnostic value of tomosynthesis exam

Safety and Preliminary Efficacy of Ultrasound-guided Percutaneous Irreversible Electroporation for Treatment of Localized Pancreatic Cancer

Background: Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a local tumor treatment. Thin needles are placed percutaneously around the tumor under ultrasound guidance. Short pulses of direct current sent through the tissue irreversibly increase cell membrane permeability leading to cell death. We report a phase I study assessing the safety of ultrasound guided percutaneous IRE in patients with localized pan

Internationalisation in the Swedish nurse education from the perspective of teachers involved: An interview study

This paper presents results from an interview investigation with teachers in Swedish nurse education especially interested in internationalising the education. The aim has been to study teachers' understandings and experiences of internationalisation against the backdrop of the strong concern for internationalisation expressed in policy documents. The results are seen in the context of globalisati
