Free-energy perturbation and quantum mechanical study of SAMPL4 octa-acid host-guest binding energies.

We have estimated free energies for the binding of nine cyclic carboxylate guest molecules to the octa-acid host in the SAMPL4 blind-test challenge with four different approaches. First, we used standard free-energy perturbation calculations of relative binding affinities, performed at the molecular-mechanics (MM) level with TIP3P waters, the GAFF force field, and two different sets of charges for

Ammonia adsorption on iron phthalocyanine on Au(111): Influence on adsorbate-substrate coupling and molecular spin.

The adsorption of ammonia on Au(111)-supported monolayers of iron phthalocyanine has been investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. The ammonia-induced changes of the x-ray photoemission lines show that a dative bond is formed between ammonia and the iron center of the phthalocyanine molecules, and that the local sp

On Reducing Power Consumption of Transmitting Stations in 802.11 MIMO Networks

We propose an online algorithm for energy minimization of transmitting stations in IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs). Our algorithm configures radio frequency (RF) parameters such as the number of transmitting antennas based on the real-time traffic demand and channel measurements so that the power consumption of the device is reduced and the minimum data rate requirements of statio

Extremely compact dual-band PIFAs for MIMO application

A MIMO structure consisting of two extremely compact planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) (lambda/60×lambda/20×lambda/60) is proposed for GSM 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz wireless local area network applications. The miniaturisation of each antenna is achieved through a spiral-shaped PIFA and a capacitive load, forming a LC resonator. Both antennas have a good impedance bandwidth of 0.88–0.945 and 2.39–2.48

Lowering Power Consumption in Clock by Using Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous Design Style

Power consumption in clock of large high performance VLSIs can be reduced by adopting Globally Asynchronous, Locally Synchronous design style (GALS). GALS has small overheads for the global asynchronous communication and local clock generation. We propose methods to a) evaluate the benefits of GALS and account for its overheads, which can be used as the basis for partitioning the system into optim

Bacterial vaginosis - a microbiological and immunological enigma

The development of bacterial vaginosis (BV) among women of childbearing age and the resulting quantitative and qualitative shift from normally occurring lactobacilli in the vagina to a mixture of mainly anaerobic bacteria is a microbiological and immunological enigma that so far has precluded the formulation of a unifying generally accepted theory on the aetiology and clinical course of BV This cr

Direkt profil: A system for evaluating texts of second language learners of French based on developmental sequences

Direkt Profil is an automatic analyzer oftexts written in French as a second lan-guage. Its objective is to produce an eval-uation of the developmental stage of stu-dents under the form of a grammaticallearner profile. Direkt Profil carries outa sentence analysis based on developmen-tal sequences, i.e. local morphosyntacticphenomena linked to a development in theacquisition of French. The paper pre

The Influence of Heterogeneity and Confining Pressure on the Hydromechanics of a Sandstone Using Neutron and X-Ray Imaging

This study utilizes advanced 3D imaging techniques, combining X-ray and neutron tomography, to investigate the hydromechanical evolution of Idaho Gray sandstone during coupled triaxial permeability tests. The analysis involved correlating mechanical and hydraulic bulk measurements, porosity fields, strain fields derived from Digital Volume Correlation analysis and fluid speed fields derived from t

The objective of this article is to study the links between the funding of primary education, access to education and economic growth in France in the 19th century. To do this, we use information on the funding allocated by the state, départements, local authorities, and households over the period 1820-1913. Our analysis consists of two stages. Firstly, we analyse the evolution of these different

Thermal comfort conditions in an E-W oriented street canyon in Freiburg (Germany) during the European summer heatwave 2003

The thermal comfort conditions were analyzed for people within a street canyon, a medium sized city in the southern upper Rhine plain, during the summer heatwave 2003. Continuous measurements of all meteorological data necessary to calculate PET that is air temperature Ta, vapor pressure VP, wind speed v, and short and long wave radiation flux densities from the three-dimensional (3D) surroundings

A flexible approach on pulsed wire magnetic measurement method

The Pulsed Wire (PW) method offers a promising solution for performing local magnetic field measurements in undulators that have limited access that restricts traditional Hall-Probe (HP) measurements. With this technology, undulators can be designed with a closed frame structure, becoming more compact and cost effective. At the same time, the PW method suffers from intrinsic error sources which ca

A Tale of Three Cities : a comparative analysis of climate policy formulation in Swedish municipalities

The adage “think global, act local” can be a fitting description of how to address climate change. Municipalities are often responsible for implementing the measures required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and shift to a more climate-neutral development trajectory. However, there is a vast spectrum of municipal ambition regarding climate, and not all municipalities manage to have robust and am

Adaptive reuse of a multifunctional coworking hub: Upgrading to contemporary standards

This thesis investigates how an existing multifunctional coworking hub in Stockholm can adapt and improve through functional change to meet new current standards and beyond in our refined digital age. The process is defined by research and insights collected from it, starting with a site analysis of the building and the community in its context followed by a study on adaptive reuse to structurize

An institutional weakness? – The participation of Chinese miners in Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector.

This thesis addresses the ongoing debate on the involvement of Chinese nationals in Ghana's artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector. Despite the Minerals and Mining Law, Act 703 (2006) prohibiting foreigners from engaging in ASGM, it is reported that about 50,000 Chinese nationals have migrated to rural Ghana to engage in illegal mining activities. This has caught the attention of

The patois of Evolène – a municipality in the Swiss canton of Valais – is the only autochthonous Franco-Provençal dialect that is still being transmitted to new generations in the French speaking part of Switzerland. This work is based on a questionnaire, distributed through Google Forms and answered by 10 patois speaking residents of Evolène. The respondents were questioned on two main topics: ho

Sustainability vs. Media Production - A Status Quo Analysis

This thesis paper takes a closer look at the degree to which sustainability and measures thereof are already existent within the media industry, and what development there has been up to now. For this status quo analysis, both the worldwide markets, like the U.S. and several European, as well as a closer look onto the German media market have been taken into account. In addition, a description of
