Människan har sedan årtusenden tillbaka studerat natthimlen. Under lång tid gjordes observationer med blotta ögat eller med hjälp av mycket enkla linser. Idag använder astronomer avancerade teleskop och instrument, både på marken och ute i rymden. Astronomer skapar även modeller, till exempel om hur planeter bildas kring stjärnor utanför vårt solsystem.
