High crystal quality wurtzite-zinc blende heterostructures in metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy-grown GaAs nanowires
We have prepared GaAs wurtzite (WZ)-zinc blende (ZB) nanowire heterostructures by Au particle-assisted metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) growth. Superior crystal quality of both the transition region between WZ and ZB and of the individual segments themselves was found for WZ-ZB single heterostructures. Pure crystal phases were achieved and the ZB segments were found to be free of any stac

Partial melting in amphibolites in a deep section of the Sveconorwegian Orogen, SW Sweden
Garnet amphibolite metataxites at the Steningekusten Nature Reserve in southwestern Sweden contain tonalitic patches and veins. Whole rock chemistry suggests that the protoliths were mafic igneous rocks with alkaline affinities. Orthopyroxene megacrysts are present in leucosome in parts of these garnet amphibolites but absent in others. Orthopyroxene megacrysts were formed by vapor-absent melting
Investigating stellar-mass black hole kicks
We investigate whether stellar-mass black holes have to receive natal kicks in order to explain the observed distribution of low-mass X-ray binaries containing black holes within our Galaxy. Such binaries are the product of binary evolution, where the massive primary has exploded forming a stellar-mass black hole, probably after a common envelope phase where the system contracted down to separatio
Socioeconomic factors and concomitant diseases are related to the risk for venous thromboembolism during long time follow-up.
While the risk for arterial vascular disease has been shown to be influenced by socioeconomic status (SES), there is limited information whether SES also influences the risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). To evaluate whether there is an association between SES and VTE incidence. In 1990, all 730,050 inhabitants (379,465 women and 350,585 men) above 25 years of age in the County of Skåne in Swed
Constrained optimization of gradient waveforms for generalized diffusion encoding.
Diffusion MRI is a useful probe of tissue microstructure. The conventional diffusion encoding sequence, the single pulsed field gradient, has recently been challenged as more general gradient waveforms have been introduced. Out of these, we focus on q-space trajectory imaging, which generalizes the scalar b-value to a tensor valued entity. To take full advantage of its capabilities, it is imperati
Genome Sequence of Moraxella catarrhalis RH4, an Isolate of Seroresistant Lineage
Here we report the annotated genome sequence of Moraxella catarrhalis strain RH4, a seroresistant-lineage strain isolated from the blood of an infected patient. This genome sequence will allow us to gain further insight into the genetic diversity of clinical M. catarrhalis isolates and will facilitate study of M. catarrhalis pathogenesis.

Quantification of Human Kallikrein-2 in Clinical Samples by Selected Reaction Monitoring
Recently, the number of mass spectrometry-based quantification assays has been increased, partly due to the global efforts of chromosome-centric human proteome project (C-HPP). Our goal at the Chromosome 19 Consortium is to provide novel selected reaction monitoring (SRM) assays of proteins coded on chromosome 19. We have selected the two most useful signature peptides (NSQVWLGR and HNLFEPEDTGQR)
Continuous monitoring of summer surface water vapor isotopic composition above the Greenland Ice Sheet
We present here surface water vapor isotopic measurements conducted from June to August 2010 at the NEEM (North Greenland Eemian Drilling Project) camp, NW Greenland (77.45 degrees N, 51.05 degrees W, 2484 m a.s.l.). Measurements were conducted at 9 different heights from 0.1m to 13.5m above the snow surface using two different types of cavity-enhanced near-infrared absorption spectroscopy analyze
Human ESC-Derived Dopamine Neurons Show Similar Preclinical Efficacy and Potency to Fetal Neurons when Grafted in a Rat Model of Parkinson's Disease.
Considerable progress has been made in generating fully functional and transplantable dopamine neurons from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Before these cells can be used for cell replacement therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD), it is important to verify their functional properties and efficacy in animal models. Here we provide a comprehensive preclinical assessment of hESC-derived midbrain do
A numerical study on flow and convective heat transfer of aviation kerosene in a vertical mini-tube at supercritical pressures
Convective heat transfer of aviation kerosene at supercritical pressures in a vertical upward tube with inner diameter 1.8 mm was numerically studied using RNG k-? turbulence model with enhanced wall treatment. The thermo-physical and transport properties of the aviation kerosene at various temperatures were obtained by a 10-species surrogate and the NIST Supertrapp software. The grid independence
Arthroscopic surgery for degenerative knee: systematic review and meta-analysis of benefits and harms.
To determine benefits and harms of arthroscopic knee surgery involving partial meniscectomy, debridement, or both for middle aged or older patients with knee pain and degenerative knee disease.
A BIM-info delivery protocol
Today, with many of the technological issues of integrated information management resolved (perhaps excluding the matter of interoperability), defining the content and status of BIM information deliveries remains both a practical and a theoretical problem. New BIM tools and new design processes and procedures have led to a certain confusion of what information is needed for particular BIM uses. Th
Season-dependent associations of circadian rhythm-regulating loci (CRY1, CRY2 and MTNR1B) and glucose homeostasis: the GLACIER Study.
The association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) proximal to CRY2 and MTNR1B with fasting glucose is well established. CRY1/2 and MTNR1B encode proteins that regulate circadian rhythmicity and influence energy metabolism. Here we tested whether season modified the relationship of these loci with blood glucose concentration.
Development of a real-time capacitive biosensor for cyclic cyanotoxic peptides based on Adda-specific antibodies.
The harmful effects of cyanotoxins in surface waters have led to increasing demands for accurate early warning methods. This study proposes a capacitive immunosensor for broad-spectrum detection of the group of toxic cyclic peptides called microcystins (∼80 congeners) at very low concentration levels. The novel analytical platform offers significant advances compared to the existing methods. Monoc
Scandinavian gender and pancake sentences : A reply to Hans-Olav Enger
In a recent NJL article (Enger 2013), Hans-Olav Enger argues against some analyses of gender and ‘pancake sentences’, in particular against Josefsson (2009). In this short contribution, I will discuss what I take to be misunderstandings in Enger (2013). In addition I will discuss some data not included in Enger’s (2013) analysis, which I will show to be crucial for the comparison between the diffe
On icing and icing mitigation of wind turbine blades in cold climate
A review on icing physics, ice detection, anti-icing and de-icing techniques for wind turbines in cold climate has been performed. Typical physical properties of atmospheric icing and the corresponding meteorological parameters are presented. For computational modeling of ice accretion on turbine blades, the LEWINT code was adopted to simulate ice accretion on an aerofoil for a 2 MW wind turbine.
The Effect and Duration of Prophylactic Platelet Transfusions Before Insertion of a Central Venous Catheter in Patients with Bone Marrow Failure Evaluated with Point-of-Care Methods and Flow Cytometry.
Patients with bone marrow failure and severe thrombocytopenia are frequently given prophylactic platelet transfusion before interventions. The clinical effects of such transfusions, however, are poorly defined. We performed a prospective observational study on patients with bone marrow failure scheduled for prophylactic platelet transfusion before the insertion of a central venous catheter. The ob
