Aortitis caused by Abiotrophia defectiva: Description of two cases

Abiotrophia defectiva is a well-known endocarditis pathogen, however it has never been described as a cause of primary aortitis. Here we describe the first published case of thoracic aortitis and an unusual case of aortic graft infection due to A. defectiva, which were both managed conservatively.

On a Fire Fighter’s Problem

Suppose that a circular fire spreads in the plane at unit speed. A single fire fighter can build a barrier at speed v>1. How large must v be to ensure that the fire can be contained, and how should the fire fighter proceed? We contribute two results. First, we analyze the natural curve FFv that develops when the fighter keeps building, at speed v, a barrier along the boundary of the expanding fir

Towards an optical diagnostic system for otitis media using a combination of otoscopy and spectroscopy

An improved method, where conventional otoscope investigation of human suspicious otitis media is combined with diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy (GASMAS) is being developed. Otitis media is one of the most common infectious diseases in children, whose Eustachian tube connecting the middle ear with the nasal cavity is more horizontal than for adul

Humanitarian Reason in the Shadows. Transit Migration Politics and Human Rights Defenders in Mexico

Despite the high degree of complexity that marks the migratory flows transiting the country they have historically been perceived as labour and voluntary migrations and used in the production of “illegality”. “Illegality” demarcates and ‘invisibilises’ individuals eligible for protection. Incidents such as death, rape, kidnappings and other types of abuse faced by transit migratory flows across bo

A novel semi-automatic hip morphology assessment tool is more accurate than manual radiographic evaluations

Radiological and pathological characteristics of hip osteoarthritis (OA) is joint-space loss due to degradation of articular cartilage. However, patients with early-stage OA do not yet show any radiological signs, which leaves them without diagnosis and treatment. This study evaluates the potential of a novel tool to identify pre-radiographic OA changes based on hip bone morphology. Two statistica

The Spatial Organization of Bone Crafting During the Middle and Late Mesolithic at Ringsjöholm and Strandvägen in Sweden

This paper focuses on the spatial distribution of bone tool production waste from two Mesolithic sites in Sweden, Ringsjöholm and Strandvägen, with well-preserved faunal remains including bone and antler artifacts. Local production on both sites has generated a variety of identifiable waste products deriving from complete chains of production, including unmodified bones, debitage and finished prod

Time-variant reliability of timber beams according to Eurocodes considering long-term deflections

In order to achieve a consistent level of failure probability, structural design codes are optimized using probabilistic methods. This optimization process traditionally focuses on the ultimate limit states (ULS). However, in the design of timber structures the performance of the structural members is often governed by the serviceability limit state (SLS) associated with different load levels than

Occupational balance, work and life satisfaction in working cohabiting parents in Sweden

Introduction: Occupational balance is the experience of having the right amount and right variation between work, domestic work, leisure, rest, and sleep. There is limited knowledge about which factors predict parents’ combined occupational balance, and if the combined occupational balance is associated with work and life satisfaction. Aim: The first aim was to explore whether domestic work and ch

A Multi-Dimensional Framework for the Development of Authentic Consumer Products

A common assumption in product value literature is that authenticity is what contemporary consumers value the most. However, as this paper illustrates, the meaning of authenticity is unclear, and the term appears foreign to product development practitioners. The purpose of this paper is to explore in what ways product development professionals talk about product value in general and how this relat

Citing Matters : An Analysis of the Use of Judicial Decisions in International Criminal Law Adjudication through the Lens of Law-Making

The present research investigates the formative processes of international criminal law through the iterative citation of judicial decisions in adjudicatory practices. Given the centrality of the judge in the adjudication of international criminal law, this study is underpinned by a legal realist approach to international law informed by the work of Alf Ross (Scandinavian Legal Realism) and GregorThe present research investigates the formative processes of international criminal law through the iterative citation of judicial decisions in adjudicatory practices. The politics of fossil fuel subsidies and their reform : Implications for climate change mitigation

The production and consumption of fossil fuels need to decrease significantly to meet the 2015 Paris Agreement's ambitious climate change goals. However, fossil fuels continue to receive significant amounts of government support. Although reforming fossil fuel subsidies can yield climate change mitigation benefits, the specific international and domestic political context and political economy of

Systemic problems of capacity development for disaster risk reduction in a complex, uncertain, dynamic, and ambiguous world

The international community has been engaged in capacity development for decades, sometimes under different names or with a slightly different focus. So far, these efforts have failed to bring significant and sustainable change. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 specifies capacity development as the means to reduce disaster losses substantially. The purpose of this paper i

Coordination of legislative speech in times of crisis : Youth unemployment and debates on redistributive policies in the Swedish Riksdag, 1994–2014

Parliamentary debates and the discussion on different law proposals are a key part of the process of policy making. We argue in this article that a high economic problem pressure in the region an MP represents will affect the MP’s legislative speechmaking. We also hypothesise that parties tend to coordinate their speakers in parliament to display a cohesive profile in the domain of labour, employm

Effects of moisture dynamics on bryophyte carbon fluxes in a tropical cloud forest

Bryophytes play key roles in the ecological function of a number of major world biomes but remain understudied compared with vascular plants. Little is known about bryophyte responses to different aspects of predicted changes in moisture dynamics with climate change. In this study, CO 2 fluxes and photosynthetic light responses were measured within bryophyte mesocosms, being subjected to differe

Visual scanning during emotion recognition in long-term recovered anorexia nervosa : An eye-tracking study

Objective: To examine Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) and visual scanning behavior (eye-tracking) during FER in women long-term recovered from teenage-onset anorexia nervosa (recAN) with and without autism spectrum disorder (±ASD) and age-matched comparison women (COMP), using a sensitive design with facial emotion expressions at varying intensities in order to approximate real social contexts. M

Parent-offspring transmission of drug abuse and alcohol use disorder : Application of the multiple parenting relationships design

With complete genealogical and cohabitation information, new genetic-epidemiological designs can be developed to clarify causes of parent-offspring transmission. We propose the Multiple Parenting Relationships (MPR) Design and apply it to drug abuse (DA) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Using national Swedish registries, we identified four kinds of informative parents with multiple children with wh

Following Nature : Bioinspired Mediation Strategy for Gram-Positive Bacterial Cells

Employment of redox polymers as mediators is a promising concept to facilitate electron transfer (ET) and improve operational performance of bioelectrochemical systems. Materials science offers a broad range of mediation possibilities; however, their employment so far relies on a trial-and-error approach, since there is no comprehensive understanding of the nature of the ET between bacterial cells
