Minimally modified low density lipoprotein (mmLDL) is a well-known risk factor for cerebral vascular diseases and upregulation of endothelin type B (ETB) receptors plays key roles in the pathogenesis. The present study was designed to examine if mmLDL upregulated endothelin ETB receptors in basilar artery and its possible intracellular signaling molecular mechanisms. Rat basilar arteries were cult

Purpose: To determine whether early assessment of cerebral white matter degradation can predict late delayed cognitive decline after radiotherapy (RT). Methods and Materials: Ten patients undergoing conformal fractionated brain RT participated in a prospective diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging study. Magnetic resonance imaging studies were acquired before RT, at 3 and 6 weeks during RT,

Understanding farmer behaviour is needed for local agricultural systems to produce food sustainably while facing multiple pressures. We synthesize existing literature to identify three fundamental questions that correspond to three distinct areas of knowledge necessary to understand farmer behaviour: 1) decision-making model; 2) cross-scale and cross-level pressures; and 3) temporal dynamics. We u

We present the measurements of particle pair yields per trigger particle obtained from di-hadron azimuthal correlations in pp collisions at root s = 0.9, 2.76, and 7TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. The yields are studied as a function of the charged particle multiplicity. Taken together with the single particle yields the pair yields provide information about parton fragmentation at low trans

The integrated selective enrichment target is a microfluidic platform for SPE sample preparation with integrated nanocolumns, which simultaneously offers direct MALDI MS read-out. Here, we present a study on the importance of different nanocolumn outlet hole geometries and hole areas in relation to MS signal intensity and reproducibility. A design solution that provides the flow characteristics re

Lignin oxidation was enzymatically monitored by measuring methanol released during the reaction. The methanol was oxidized to formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide, and the latter used to oxidize ABTS to a product measured spectrophotometrically. The efficiency was comparable to the commonly used gas chromatography method. The assay was fast and inexpensive.

Value is a key concept for researchers and practitioners in the fields of strategy, marketing, and pricing. In the strategy literature, value is closely related to competitive advantage and profit, in the marketing literature value is the cornerstone of the marketing management process, in the pricing literature value represents the customer’s willingness to pay. The aim of this article is to brid

This work describes and proposes the application of evolutionary algorithms on the multiuser spectrum and SNR margin optimization problem for multicarrier systems, such as digital subscriber line. The proposed method is designed such that it takes advantage of special characteristics of the well-known power adaptation techniques and uses them to solve the broader and more challenging problem of mu

This paper describes searches for the pair production of first or second generation scalar leptoquarks using 35 pb(-1) of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at root s = 7 TeV. Leptoquarks are searched in events with two oppositely-charged muons or electrons and at least two jets, and in events with one muon or electron, missing transverse momentum and at least two jets. The 14th edition of International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (shortly: Networks 2010) held in Warsaw, Poland. Networks 2010 was a four-day professional and scientific event organized by Warsaw University of Technology in co-operation with Polish Association of Telecommunication Engineers (SIT). The conference was focused on network design and planning methods includ

BackgroundThe greatest potential to reduce the burden of stroke is by primary prevention of first-ever stroke, which constitutes three quarters of all stroke. In addition to population-wide prevention strategies (the mass' approach), the high risk' approach aims to identify individuals at risk of stroke and to modify their risk factors, and risk, accordingly. Current methods of assessing and modif

Previous studies have found associations between pediatric sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and socioeconomic status (SES), as well as a neighborhood-related disadvantage. This study analyzes the association among familial SES, parental occupation, and SDB in Swedish offspring.

INTRODUCTION: We have shown that low protein C levels predict poor survival up to five years in a general intensive care unit patient material and hypothesize that treatment with protein C is beneficial. The objectives were to calculate costs of protein C treatment, at best-case scenario, per statistical life saved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-two patients with deranged global haemostatic tests

Background: DYRK1A is a kinase targeting several proteins associated with the pathology of dementias, including alpha-synuclein and amyloid precursor protein. It is not clear if DYRK1A genetics are associated with neurodegenerative conditions. Objective: To determine if DYRK1A also has a genetic association with alpha-synuclein dementias such as dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease de

Abstract in Undetermined The use of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to study bone microstructure is continuously increasing. Thus, it is important to ensure that micro-CT can differentiate healthy and pathological bone. This study aimed to determine whether the reproducibility of bone histomorphometry and micro-CT, and agreement between the techniques, vary in bone samples with different meta

The recognition that animals sense the world in a different way than we do has unlocked important lines of research in ecology and evolutionary biology. In practice, the subjective study of natural stimuli has been permitted by perceptual spaces, which are graphical models of how stimuli are perceived by a given animal. Because colour vision is arguably the best-known sensory modality in most anim

The bleeding patterns of severe von Willebrand's disease (VWD) adversely affect quality of life, and may be life threatening. There is a presumed role for prophylaxis with VWF-containing concentrates, but data are scarce. The von Willebrand Disease Prophylaxis Network (VWD PN) was formed to investigate the role of prophylaxis in clinically severe VWD that is not responsive to other treatment(s). U

In many cases, classic in vitro tests are used to investigate dissolution from powders and solids. A problem with these kinds of tests is the frequent use of agitation, leading to a lumped description of the properties at the solid-liquid intetface. The hydrodynamic forces arising from agitation might have a nontrivial impact on the dissolution properties, thus calling for a comparison of results
