Influence of lifestyle behaviours on bone mineral density among young healthy women: A two-year study. A Tentative Salutary Model.
The overall aim of this prospective observational study with a salutogenic approach was to investigate bone mineral density (BMD) and BMD changes in the heel bone, in a group of healthy women, in relation to physiological factors and lifestyle behaviours over a two-year period as well as investigating the women’s view of their lifestyle behaviours. Data were collected in 1999 (T1) and 2001 (T2). H

Effects of acetabular resurfacing component material and fixation on the strain distribution in the pelvis
A 3D finite element (FE) model of an implanted pelvis was developed as part of a project investigating an all-polymer hip resurfacing design. The model was used to compare this novel design with a metal-on-metal design in current use and a metal-on-polymer design typical of early resurfacing implants. The model included forces representing the actions of 22 muscles as well as variable cancellous b

Transferability of tag SNPs in genetic association studies in multiple populations
A general question for linkage disequilibrium-based association studies is how power to detect an association is compromised when tag SNPs are chosen from data in one population sample and then deployed in another sample. Specifically, it is important to know how well tags picked from the HapMap DNA samples capture the variation in other samples. To address this, we collected dense data uniformly

Bronchoscopic diagnosis of pulmonary infections in a heterogeneous, nonselected group of patients
Fiberoptic bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage and protected specimen brush technique has become an established method for etiologic diagnosis in severe forms of pulmonary infections during recent years. In this study, including 62 bronchoscopies in 53 patients, a standardized program, covering all important pulmonary pathogens, has been evaluated in a heterogeneous group of patients. Results
Characterization of N-representable n-particle densities when N is infinite
We have found necessary and sufficient conditions for the n-particle density to be N-representable for infinite A, if n is even. There are some mild restrictions on the one-density for these conditions to apply. The method is based on the Mercer expansion theorem. We suggest a simple method for total energy calculations based on this characterization also if the number of particles is finite. (c)

Quantum interference in organic solid
We demonstrate high contrast quantum interference between one-photon and three-photon absorption pathways in an organic solid at room temperature. Illumination of a thin polymer film activated with fluorescing dendrimer chromophores of large three photon absorption cross section with two simultaneous femtosecond pulses at near-IR frequency. and its third harmonic UV frequency 3. results in a spati

The biology of nerve injury and repair
A peripheral nerve injury has a profound impact on the patient’s life and such an injury causes high costs for society. A peripheral nerve injury is a very complex injury because it involves both peripheral and central components of the nervous system all the way from targets at muscle and skin receptors up to the brain. In the neuron and its supporting cells—mainly Schwann cells—there are numerou
Quantum Optics and Quantum Information Processing in Rare-Earth-Ion-Doped Crystals
Popular Abstract in Swedish Ljusets minsta kända beståndsdelar kallas fotoner. Vågegenskaperna, å andra sidan, visar sig i interfereIn this thesis, aspects of the use of cryogenically cooled rare-earth-ion-doped crystals in the fields of quantum optics and quantum information processing are addressed. The experiments and theoretical considerations referred to in this thesis are based on the coherent transient interaction between light and the ions in the crystals. A photon echo experiment has been performed where faint optica
Heterogeneity of the O alleles at the blood group ABO locus in Amerindians
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Amerindians are blood group O, but the distribution of the various O alleles is unknown. Their ABO genotypes were compared with samples from other Brazilian ethnic groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Genomic DNA was examined by PCR-RFLP analysis, PCR-SSP and direct sequencing. RESULTS: An unusual allele distribution was found, with 91% of the O alleles being O1variant. Almost
Fetal cerebral blood flow velocity during labor and the early neonatal period
This study was performed to elucidate circulatory changes in the fetal cerebral circulation during uncomplicated labor and in early neonatal life. Eighteen healthy term singleton fetuses were followed longitudinally during labor. Using the transabdominal approach, and the color Doppler technique, the middle cerebral artery was identified and Doppler flow velocity waveforms recorded between and dur
Internal frost damage in concrete - experimental studies of destruction mechanisms
The aim of the study was to identify mechanisms acting at internal frost destruction of concrete. By 'internal frost destruction' is meant damage caused inside concrete that is moisture insulated from the surroundings, i.e. when no moisture exchange with the surroundings is possible during freeze-thaw. Thus, the aim was not to investigate destruction processes (scaling) taking place at the surface
