New approaches to the analysis of enzymatically hydrolyzed methyl cellulose. Part 2. Comparison of various enzyme preparations

In this part of our studies, dealing with new approaches to the analysis of enzymatically hydrolyzed methyl cellulose, five different enzymes or enzyme preparations containing endoglucanases (from Bacillus agaradhaerens Cel 5A, Trichoderma reesei, Trichoderma Viride, and two obtained from Trichoderma longibrachiatum) were used to hydrolyze six different methyl celluloses (MCs). The main goal was t

A heterogeneous model for the MCFC cathode

A steady state agglomerate model for the MCFC cathode which takes into account the heterogeneous structure of this porous electrode is presented. The resulting model equations are solved by means of the finite element method. Calculations have been performed on two different test structures and include the influence of kinetics, porosity, outer surface area and distribution of electrolyte film. Co

Lift-off process for nanoimprint lithography

We report a novel a lift-off method for nanoimprint lithography. This is a bi-layer method, using a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) on lift-off layer (LOL) resist scheme. For the imprint step, direct evidence for good pattern transfer down to 20 nm is shown. Oxygen plasma ashing is required to remove residual PMMA. A liquid solvent, MF 319, is used to transfer the pattern down to the silicon. The L

Long-Term Effects of Pallidal or Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation on Quality of Life in Parkinson's Disease

We assessed the effects of deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) or internal pallidum (GPi-DBS) on health-related quality of life (HrQoL) in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease participating in a previously reported multicenter trial. Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) questionnaires were available for analysis in a Subgroup of n = 20/20 patients with GPi-DBS and n = 45/49

Concerted evolution of two Mhc class II B loci in pheasants and domestic chickens

The major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) of the ring-necked pheasant contains two polymorphic Mhc class II B genes. We show here, by screening of a cDNA library and RT-PCR from RNA, that both of these loci, Phco-DAB1 and Phco-DAB2, normally are transcribed in the spleen. They differ mainly in the 3' untranslated (UT) region, with the transcript lengths, not including the poly(A) tails, being 1,1

The collapse of cycles in the dynamics of North American grouse populations

Cyclic dynamics of bird and mammal populations are commonly reported in northern latitudes throughout the world, and recent European observations on rodents and grouse suggest that cycle periods decline towards southern latitudes. To investigate latitudinal patterns of cyclic dynamics in North America, we assembled 27 long-term data sets collected between 1939 and 2001 for three grouse species. By

Validation of a rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy model for carbon dioxide using high-resolution detection in the temperature range 294-1143 K

Experiments were performed in the temperature range of 294 - 1143 K in pure CO2 using high-resolution rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS), in the dual-broadband approach. Experimental single-shot spectra were recorded with high spectral resolution using a single-mode Nd:YAG laser and a relay imaging lens system on the exit of a 1 m spectrometer. A theoretical rotational CARS

Pharyngeal constrictor paresis: an indicator of neurologic disease?

Pharyngeal constrictor paresis (PHCP) is sometimes found in videoradiography of the swallowing act in patients complaining of dysphagia. Ten patients with PHCP and 10 dysphagic, age- and sex-matched controls with normal videoradiography were neurologically evaluated and examined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and brainstem in order to learn the pathogenetic process behind PHCP.

HIV-1 Nef mimics an integrin receptor signal that recruits the polycomb group protein Eed to the plasma membrane

The Nef protein of human and simian immunodeficiency virus (HIV/SIV) is believed to interfere with T cell activation signals by forming a signaling complex at the plasma membrane. Composition and function of the complex are not fully understood. Here we report that Nef recruits the Polycomb Group (PcG) protein Eed, so far known as a nuclear factor and repressor of transcription, to the membrane of

Mutations in the low-density lipoprotein receptor gene in Swedish familial hypercholesterolaemia patients: clinical expression and treatment response

BACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolaemia, an autosomal co-dominant disorder caused by defects in the low-density lipoprotein receptor gene, is strongly associated with premature development of cardiovascular disease. METHODS: In this study, we have applied a gene screening method in a population of familial hypercholesterolaemia patients in order to describe the genetic background of the disease

Interplay between single-particle and collective effects in the odd-A Cu isotopes beyond N=40

Collective properties of the low-lying levels in the odd-A Cu67-73 were investigated by Coulomb excitation with radioactive beams. The beams were produced at ISOLDE and postaccelerated by REX-ISOLDE up to 2.99 MeV/u. In Cu-67,Cu-69, low-lying 1/2(-), 5/2(-), and 7/2(-) states were populated. In Cu-71,Cu-73, besides the known transitions deexciting the single-particle-like 5/2(-) and core-coupled 7

Nitrogen translocation between Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. seedlings inoculated with Frankia sp and Pinus contorta Doug ex Loud seedlings connected by a common ectomycorrhizal mycelium

Uptake and translocation of nitrogen was studied in laboratory microcosms consisting of Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn., Frankia sp., Paxillus involutus (Fr.) Fr. and Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. P. involutus was shown to form a fully functional ectomycorrhizal association with alder as well as pine, and the seedlings thus became interconnected by a common mycelium. When microcosms were exposed to
