The matter of energy emerges: Bridging the divide between conflicting conceptions of energy resources

After decades of theoretical neglect of material properties and relations, a much welcome material turn within social science energy research has recently raised discussions of materiality to the centre of current debates. So far, the efforts to rematerialize energy has to a large extent drawn on new materialist thinking. Against the substantivalist conception of energy resources as self-standing

True collision renal tumour of oncocytoma and papillary Renal cell carcinoma: Case Report and Review of the Literature

The clear cell, chromophobe and papillary carcinoma as well as oncocytoma are the most common renal tumours. While cases of hybrid renal tumours are well known, the true collision renal tumour of oncocytoma and Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma (PRCC) is still rare. Herein, we present a case of a true collision renal tumour of an oncocytoma and a PRCC as well as a review of the literature.

Short Attosecond Pulse Trains at High Repetition Rates for Novel Pump-Probe and Coincidence Studies

This work aims at studying photoionization dynamics from atoms and surfaces at attose time scales. The work was based on development and applications of a high repetition rate High-order Harmonic Generation (HHG) light source that utilizes Optical Parametric Amplification (OPA) laser technology. The laser system delivers few-cycle pulses in the near infrared (IR) at a repetition rate of 200 kHz. Processes of academisation in higher music education: The case of Sweden.

Higher music education (HME) in Europe is multifaceted due to the great variety of legal frameworks, conservatory histories and practices. However, following the Bologna declaration in 1999, traditional conservatories are gradually transforming into research-based institutions, which means combining advanced performer training with artistic research. Combustion and Emission Characteristics of Ammonia under Conditions Relevant to Modern Gas Turbines

Ammonia (NH3) is considered a promising alternative fuel, capable of producing energy with zero CO2 emissions. Its combustion, however, poses a series of challenges due to the low reactivity of NH3 and the formation of very high quantities of NOx. This work numerically investigates the combustion and emission characteristics of ammonia in three modern stationary gas turbine concepts, namely (a) le

Efficient inference for stochastic differential equation mixed-effects models using correlated particle pseudo-marginal algorithms

Stochastic differential equation mixed-effects models (SDEMEMs) are flexible hierarchical models that are able to account for random variability inherent in the underlying time-dynamics, as well as the variability between experimental units and, optionally, account for measurement error. Fully Bayesian inference for state-space SDEMEMs is performed, using data at discrete times that may be incompl

Waiting : a Christmas 2020 Essay

Corona time is a time of buffering. This essay takes the pandemic, as it could be understood right before Christmas 2020, as its' point of departure. The essay is an audiovisual remix of the Mundania File "Waiting for Events":https://mundania.se/waiting-for-events/ and part of my ongoing research about "Connected Homes and Distant Infrastructures".

Bullying, health complaints, and self-rated health among school-aged children and adolescents

Objective: The aim of the current study was to examine whether health complaints and self-reported health were associated with bullying victimization in a large cohort of Icelandic children and adolescents. Methods: In this study, we used data from a school-based cross-sectional survey, specifically, the Icelandic contribution to the international research network Health Behavior in School-aged Ch

Using logic programming for theory representation and scientific inference

The aim of this paper is to show that logic programming is a powerful tool for representing scientific theories and for scientific inference. In a logic program it is possible to encode the qualitative and quantitative components of a theory in first order predicate logic, which is a highly expressive formal language. A theory program can then be handed to an algorithm that reasons about the theor

Jackdaw nestlings rapidly increase innate immune function during the nestling phase but no evidence for a trade-off with growth

Although animals are born with a protective immune system, even the innate immune system is under development from birth to adulthood and this development may be affected by sex and growth. However, most knowledge comes from captive animals or long-lived slow growing species. Moreover, little is known about how innate immune function, the important first line of defence, develops during early life

A ternary model of personality : Temperament, character, and identity

Human beings are definitely storytellers capable of travel back and forward in time. We not only construct stories about ourselves, but also share these with others (McAdams and McLean 2013). We construct and internalize an evolving and integrative story for life, that is, a narrative identity (Singer 2004). However, the life story is just one of three layers of personality that are in a dynamical

Coupled heat, mass and momentum transport in swelling cellulose based materials with application to retorting of paperboard packages

Understanding the complex interplay of mass transport, heat transport and deformation in swelling cellulose based materials is a challenging task. To aid in this endeavour a multiphysics model is developed within the mixture theory framework. The model is macroscopic and accounts for swelling, non-equilibrium mass exchange of water, elastic deformation and multiphase transport phenomena, where non

Det smarta hemmets mundanisering

The smart home around 2020 is based on interconnected software equipped things that through automation are supposed to deliver new pleasures and conveniences. This technological makeover of domestic settings is characterised by consumption of things that are promoted as novel and spectacular. If successful, these things are then gradually transformed into ignored infrastructure, into paraphernalia

Removal of pharmaceutical metabolites in wastewater ozonation including their fate in different post-treatments

Advanced treatment technologies for the removal of pharmaceuticals and other organic micropollutants in WWTPs primarily target the removal of parent compounds. Nevertheless, the removal of metabolites originating from human- or microbial metabolism during biological treatment needs comparable consideration, as some of them might be present in high concentrations and contribute to toxicity. This st

Magnesium/Nano-hydroxyapatite Composite for Bone Reconstruction : The Effect of Processing Method

Nano-ceramic particles can serve as reinforcing agents for metallic materials to improve their mechanical properties. However, it is important to ensure chemical compatibility between the matrix and particles. In the present study, magnesium composites with and without nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) particles were fabricated for bone reconstruction applications. Two different techniques were used, Conv

A feedforward approach to mid-ranging control

Mid-ranging control is a control strategy that is used when there are more than one manipulated variable available to control a process variable. Mid-ranging control handles the redundancy by coordinating the roles of the different manipulated variables. The most common approach is to introduce valve position controllers (VPC) that control the relations between the manipulated variables. In this p

Mesh bags underestimated arbuscular mycorrhizal abundance but captured fertilization effects in a mesocosm experiment

Aims: Ingrowth bags are widely used to estimate mycorrhizal growth and dynamics. However, it remains unclear to what extent they reflect the surrounding soil, and how this varies with environmental conditions. Methods: We used a fertilization experiment to investigate if carbon-free mesh bags were representative of their surrounding soil. We determined AMF hyphal length density (HLD), phospholipid

Functionalized single-walled carbon-nanotube-blended P3HT-based high performance memory behavior thin-film transistor devices

We report on the fabrication and transport properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) blended with P3HT (poly 3-hexyl thiophene-2, 5-diyl). The composite is used as a hybrid organic active channel transistor. The performances of the fabricated devices were investigated as a function of the SWCNTs' loads in the composite, and their response evaluated under white light illumination. Our re
