Adjusting results for confounding bias
Parasitism of Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993 on pupae of Methona themisto (Hubner, [1818]) reared on two hosts (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae; Hymenoptera: Eulophidae)
Previous studies showed that larvae of Methona themisto (Hubner, [ 1818]) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) display a showy yellow color to avoid predation. In addition, these larvae absorb secondary compounds when feeding on Brunfelsia uniflora (Pohl) D. Don (Solanaceae) plants, although this does not prevent pupal parasitism by Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae)
3d photoionization and subsequent decay of atomic gallium
We present an experimental and theoretical study of 3d photoionization and subsequent Auger decay of atomic gallium. The synchrotron radiation-induced electron spectra have been compared and analysed using multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations. It has been shown that the theoretically predicted photoelectron spectrum is in rather good agreement with the experiment allowing us to identify the
Low concentrations of serum testosterone predict acute myocardial infarction in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the associations between endogenous testosterone concentrations and the incidence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in men and women with and without type 2 diabetes.
Too early to infer a global NPP decline since 2000
The global terrestrial carbon cycle plays a pivotal role in regulating the atmospheric composition of greenhouse gases. It has recently been suggested that the upward trend in net primary production (NPP) seen during the 1980's and 90's has been replaced by a negative trend since 2000 induced by severe droughts mainly on the southern hemisphere. Here we compare results from an individual-based glo
Power in Telephone-advice Nursing
Power is a central aspect of nursing, especially in telephone-advice nursing, where nurses assess callers' medical problems and decide what measures that need to be taken. This article presents a framework for understanding how power operates in social interaction between nurses and callers in telephone-advice nursing in primary care in Sweden. Power is analysed as the result of nurses and callers
Brain Activity in Predictive Sensorimotor Control for Landings: an EEG Pilot Study
Landing from a jump is related to predictive sensorimotor control. Frontal, central and parietal brain areas are known to play a role in this process based on online sensory feedback. This can be measured by EEG. However, there is only limited knowledge about brain activity during predictive preparation for drop landings (DL). The purpose is to demonstrate changes in brain activity in preparation
Non-binary and linear precoded faster-than-Nyquist signaling
Faster than Nyquist (FTN) signaling is an important method of narrowband coding. The concept is extended here to non binary signal constellations; these are much more bandwidth efficient than binary ones. A powerful method of finding the minimum distance for binary and non binary FTN is presented. Precoding FTN transmissions with short linear filters proves to be an effective way to gain distance.
Dynamical screening in La2CuO4
We show that the dynamical screening of the Coulomb interaction among Cu-d electrons in high-Tc cuprates is strong and that a proper treatment of this effect is essential for a consistent description of the electronic structure. In particular, we find that ab initio calculations for undoped La2CuO4 in the paramagnetic phase yield an insulator only if the frequency dependence of the Coulomb interac
Evaluation of high throughput gene expression platforms using a genomic biomarker signature for prediction of skin sensitization.
Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) develops upon exposure to certain chemical compounds termed skin sensitizers. To reduce the occurrence of skin sensitizers, chemicals are regularly screened for their capacity to induce sensitization. The recently developed Genomic Allergen Rapid Detection (GARD) assay is an in vitro alternative to animal testing for identification of skin sensitizers, classifying
Transients in the Formation of Nanowire Heterostructures.
We present results on the effect of seed particle reconfiguration on the growth of short InAs and InP nanowire segments. The reconfiguration originates in two different steady state alloy compositions of the Au/In seed particle during growth of InAs and InP. From compositional analysis of the seed particle, the In content in the seed particle is determined to be 34 and 44% during InAs and InP grow
Innovation in cultural industries: The role of university links
This paper analyses the role of university knowledge in the innovation processes of cultural industries. Most studies of cultural industries highlight the importance of locally clustered firms in innovation processes. Those that analyze university-industry collaboration focus on technological development or industrial R&D, but neglect cultural industries as objects of analysis. The paper addre
Short-Term Exercise Training Does Not Stimulate Skeletal Muscle ATP Synthesis in Relatives of Humans With Type 2 Diabetes
OBJECTIVE-We tested the hypothesis that short-term exercise training improves hereditary insulin resistance by stimulating ATP synthesis and investigated associations With gene polymorphisms. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-We studied 24 nono-bese first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetic patients and 12 control subjects at rest, and 48 h after three bouts of exercise. In addition to measurements of o
High-spin terminating states in the N=88 Ho-155 and Er-156 isotones
The Sn-124(Cl-37, 6n gamma) fusion-evaporation reaction at a bombarding energy of 180 MeV has been used to significantly extend the excitation level scheme of Ho-155(67)88. The collective rotational behavior of this nucleus breaks down above spin I similar to 30 and a fully aligned noncollective (band terminating) state has been identified at I-pi = 79/2(-). Comparison with cranked Nilsson-Strutin

Follow-up after Revascularisation
Structured follow-up after revascularisation for chronic critical limb ischaemia (CLI) aims at sustained treatment success and continued best patient care. Thereby, efforts need to address three fundamental domains: (A) best medical therapy, both to protect the arterial reconstruction locally and to reduce atherosclerotic burden systemically; (B) surveillance of the arterial reconstruction; and (C
Biochemical and biomechanical modulation of the in vitro retina
The porcine retinal explant culture paradigm offers the possibility to study retinal health, disease and development independently from the surrounding tissues of the eye. Retina-intrinsic effects of molecular and mechanical cues on the isolated retinal sheet can thus be studied with great precision. For the purpose of creating a donor tissue optimized for transplantation, we used this system to e
STUDIES OF EFFECTS OF GSM-900 MICROWAVE EXPOSURE ON DNA ”MICRONUCLEUS” FORMATION IN MICE
Possible genotoxic effects of microwave exposure from GSM-900 mobile telephones have investigated with in vivo micronucleus assay of mouse erythrocytes from CBA mice and GFAP knockout mice. No significant change in the frequency of erythrocytes with micronuclei neither in the young (polychromatic PCE) or mature (normichromatic NCE) erythrocytes. There is, however, a tendency but not significant to
