Using two methods: (1) three-step excitation and (2) single UV photon excitation in an atomic beam with direct observation of the decay of the fluorescence light, we have measured the lifetimes of the Rydberg levels of YbI belonging to the perturbed series 6snp J = 1 levels. The measured values have been interpreted by the multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT).

This paper describes an acoustic method to induce rotating vortexflows in microchannels. The method is tested on two different systems, a mixing channel with two paralell flows and a porous silicon microreactor for protein digestion. A significant increase of the mixing ratio is detected in both cases.

Violence against women is an increasing public health concern, with assault leading to death as the most extreme outcome. Previous findings indicate that foreign-born women living in Sweden are more exposed to interpersonal violence than Swedish-born women. Context: Weight-based growth hormone (GH) dosing results in a wide variation in growth response in children with GH deficiency (GHD) or idiopathic short stature (ISS). Objective: The hypothesis tested was whether individualized GH doses, based on variation in GH responsiveness estimated by a prediction model, reduced variability in growth response around a set height target compared with a standar

In acute inflammation, infiltrating polymorphonuclear leukocytes (also known as PMNs) release preformed granule proteins having multitudinous effects on the surrounding environment. Here we present what we believe to be a novel role for PMN-derived proteins in bacterial phagocytosis by both human and murine macrophages. Exposure of macrophages to PMN secretion markedly enhanced phagocytosis of IgG

Sixty-one adult patients (34 men and 27 women) who were operated on for unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP) were followed up from 1996-2001 by clinical investigation, perceptual speech analysis, and self-estimation of quality of speech. Thirty-four had had a von Langenbeck repair at the age of 8 months (L-8 group), and 27 a Wardill repair at the age of 18 months (W-18 group). Statistic

We aimed to study the incidence, predictors, and outcome of chronic kidney disease (CKD) after heart transplantation (HT). All our HT patients 1988-2010 were considered for inclusion. Of these, 134 came for annual follow-ups including evaluation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using iohexol clearance measurements, and the CKD-EPI (adults) or Schwartz (children) formulae. Median GFR (Q1-Q3)(mL/

The aims of this article are to consider (1) whether there are medical and societal differences among diseases regarding which patient groups should be asked to participate in first-in-human (FIH) trials of stem-cell-based therapies; (2) any differences in the light of values generally endorsed by different types of ethical theories, since the question in the title of this article is value laden,
