The present European Standard for footwear testing (EN 344) classifies footwear thermally by a temperature drop inside the footwear during 30 minutes at defined conditions. Today, other methods for footwear thermal testing are also available. The aim of this study was to compare EN 344 with thermal foot method. Six boots were tested according to both methods. Additional tests with modified standar

We have reviewed 184 patients after repair of primary hypospadias. They were operated on and followed-up according to a standard protocol, and the senior author (HS) participated in all operations. The patients were reconstructed using a Byars two-stage procedure ( n = 102) or a Scuderi ( n = 29) or Mathieu ( n = 41) single-stage procedure. The rest ( n = 12) just had a removal of the chordee with

Osteopenia/osteoporosis affect many elderly people and might not be detected until symptoms of fractures occur. Early detection of osteopenia/osteoporosis is important and would allow preventive measures and treatment. Access to screening for osteopenia/osteoporosis is often limited, whereas panoramic radiography is commonly used in dentistry. The aim of this study was to determine the validity of

The development of a cell therapy for the neurodegenerative disorder Parkinson's disease is a realistic ambition. It is pursued by researchers and companies alike, and spans different donor tissue types of embryonic, fetal and adult origins. In this review, we briefly outline the past and current status of research and clinical trials with cell transplantation in Parkinson's disease. We discuss st

A linear quadratic stochastic control problem is considered. The problem involves several different controllers acting as a team, but with access to different measurements. Under appropriate assumptions on communication delays between the controllers, a quadratic control objective can be optimized using finite-dimensional convex optimization. Versions of this problem has been discussed in economic

Objectives/Hypothesis: The upper respiratory tract is involved in many acute and chronic respiratory tract diseases that present with the symptom of mucus hypersecretion. Mucin genes that encode for the backbone of glycoproteins contribute to the viscoelastic property of airway mucus. We examined the cellular expression and distribution of two major respiratory mucus-forming glycoproteins, MUC5AC

Fuel ethanol can be produced from lignocellulosic materials to replace gasoline and diesel. A crucial step in the production process is the hydrolysis (saccharification) of the material, which can be achieved with dilute acid at high temperature. Unfortunately, sugar is degraded under these severe conditions, and the sugar yield is generally low. This thesis deals with countercurrent operation, wh

This study tests the hypothesis that Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS) of lake sediments can be used to infer past changes in tree-line position and total organic carbon (TOC) content of lake water. A training set of 100 lakes from northern Sweden spanning a broad altitudinal and TOC gradient from 0.7 to 14.9 mg/l was used to assess whether vegetation zones and TOC can be modelled fr

Background: Several studies have shown a higher mortality rate in patients with osteoporosis-related fractures of the hip and vertebrae. Method: In 1999, we did a long-term follow-up case-control mortality study of 253 patients, mean age 72 years, who had sustained a fracture of the surgical neck of the humerus in 1987. Results: We found a higher mortality in fracture patients giving at end point

We use the inverse scattering transform to show that a solution of the Camassa-Holm equation is identically zero whenever it vanishes on two horizontal half-lines in the x-t space. In particular, a solution that has compact support at two different times vanishes everywhere, proving that the Carnassa-Holm equation has infinite propagation speed. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. This paper describes the philosophy behind our lighting of the RoboCup«99 games in Stockholm 1999. It also gives relevant background in the theory of light, lighting and colour in order to motivate our design. It is our hope that it will be a valuable source of information for future RoboCup game organisers.

Second or higher order probabilities have commonly been viewed with scepticism by those working within the realm of probability and decision theory. The aim of the present note is to show how the notion of second order probabilities can add to our understanding of judgmental and decision processes and how the traditional framework of Bayesian decision theory can be extended in a fruitful way by ta

The karyotype 47,XX, + 8,t(12;22)(p13;q12) was found at diagnosis in two patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL). The bone marrow morphology of both patients corresponded to the M4 subtype of the French-American-British (FAB) classification. The translocation t(12;22) has not previously been reported as the sole structural aberration in ANLL.

The recently commissioned Recoil Mass Spectrometer (RMS) at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) is described. Consisting of a momentum separator followed by an E-D-E Rochester-type mass spectrometer, the RMS is the centerpiece of the nuclear structure endstation at the HRIBF. Designed to transport ions with rigidities near K = 100, the RMS has acceptances of +/- 10% in energy and +
