PtdIns-4,5-bisphosphate is a lipid messenger of eukaryotic cells playing critical roles in processes such as cytoskeleton organization, intracellular vesicular trafficking, secretion, cell motility, regulation of ion channels and nuclear signalling pathways. The enzymes responsible for the synthesis of PtdIns(4,5)P(2) are phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinases (PIPKs). The moss Physcomitrella pate

This article investigates and discusses a football chant, a riff from a popular rock song entitled “Seven Nation Army” by the rock group The White Stripes from Detroit, USA. The chant is sung by supporters at football matches even in Sweden but also in corresponding social contexts, as when high school students graduate or at the pub. The survey, which was to by a reduction method compare the riff

Mutations in the gene encoding laminin α2 chain, an extracellular matrix protein mainly expressed in the neuromuscular system, cause a severe form of muscular dystrophy, congenital muscular dystrophy type 1A (MDC1A). Laminin α2 chain is associated to the muscle fibers by two major receptors, where one of them, integrin α7β1, is diminished upon laminin α2 chain deficiency. The majority of the skele

The research project “Exclusive Metalworking in Rural Settings” was instigated in 2013 with funding from the Berit Wallenberg Foundation. The objective of the project is to survey sites with remains of multimetal craftsmanship of the late Iron Age and medieval periods outside urban contexts. This article aims to contextualize preliminary results from the project and evaluate its chosen source mate

The authors investigate how Third Mission activities at universities, such as the outreach and technology transfer functions, are anchored in organizational structures and practices, and discuss the implications of this relationship for the success of the activities. They draw on case studies of two Swedish university colleges to illustrate the diversity of mechanisms used to achieve Third Mission

Abstract in UndeterminedIn Turkey, a considerable number of Alevi foundations and associations work intensively with promoting Alevi visibility and rights in Turkish society. Locally, they offer educational activities where Alevis can learn, practice and reflect on their religion and culture. Based on fieldwork in one Alevi foundation in present day Istanbul, this book explores ways in which knowl

The two-photon ionization of helium atoms by ultrashort extreme-ultraviolet free-electron laser pulses, produced by the SPring-8 Compact SASE Source test accelerator, was investigated at photon energies of 20.3, 21.3, 23.0 and 24.3 eV. The angular distribution of photoelectrons generated by two-photon ionization is obtained using a velocity map imaging spectrometer. The phase-shift differences and

The article is about the criteria used to decide the relevance of particular contexts to the framework for qualitative text analysis. By conceptualizing context as something that needs to be justified, rather than identified, we argue in favour of transparency when it comes to the link between text-as-data and interpretations of text-as-data. By drawing on examples from a speech made to the Europe

fMRI and EEG are two non-invasive functional imaging techniques within cognitive neuroscience that have complementary advantages to obtain both temporal and spatial information. The multi-source interference task (MSIT) has been shown to generate robust activations of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) on both a single-subject level and in group averages, in fMRI studies. We have now simu

Multi and many core platforms are increasingly employed today to cope with the demands of modern multimedia, networking and other similar streaming applications. Selecting the best architecture for a set of such applications is complex, and without coding for each specific system, the choice is made based on designer experience. In this paper we use CAL, a dataflow language for specifying streamin

BACKGROUND: Genes continuously duplicate and the duplicated copies remain in the genome or get deleted. The DAL5 subfamily of transmembrane transporter genes has eight known members in S. cerevisiae. All are putative anion:cation symporters of vitamins (such as allantoate, nicotinate, panthotenate and biotin). The DAL5 subfamily is an old and important group since it is represented in both Basidio

The aim of this thesis was to provide part of the data required in updating/developing computer simulation models (CSMs) for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using data obtained from routine clinical practice in Sweden. In paper I, evolution of five biomarkers (i.e., HbA1c, systolic blood pressure, BMI, LDL and total to HDL cholesterol ratio) over time was estimated using data on 5,043 newly diagn

Frequency multiplication by 3/2 is proposed as a means to expand the frequency generation capabilities of a single LC VCO. Fractional frequency multiplication is obtained by cascading a broadband injection locked modulo-two divider and a multiply-by-three circuit based on edge combining. The proposed solution is inductorless, thus very compact. It allows the generation of all frequencies from 2.7

OBJECTIVE: To identify how the gp130-signaling cytokine oncostatin M (OSM), acting alone or in concert with IL-1beta or TNFalpha, affects synovial fibroblast expression of genes relevant to inflammation and bone erosion in inflammatory arthritis. METHODS: Synovial fibroblasts (SFs) were isolated from non-arthritic wild type (WT) or OSM receptor deficient (OSMR(-/-)) mice and stimulated with OSM, I

Knowledge about consumer perception and preferences on solid wood, wood-based panels, and wood-based composites is important for product development and marketing. The aim of this study was to identify attributes and associations that people use to describe different types of wood materials and to explore how they relate to preferences. The study involved nine samples that were evaluated with the

We derive Portmanteau tests for a large class of non-linear time series models. This is done by replacing the linear measure of dependence (correlation) with a more general concept. Asymptotic distributions for the test statistics are derived. The methodology is computationally inexpensive, yet more flexible than most similar tests. The tests are evaluated on two different sets of simulated data.

Immunosenescence, the aging of the immune system, is well documented in humans and laboratory models and is known to increase infection risk, morbidity, and mortality among the old. Immunosenescence patterns have recently been unveiled in various free-living populations, but their consequences in the wild have not been explored. We investigated the consequences of immunosenescence in free-living T
