Cost minimization of network services with buffer and end-to-end deadline constraints

Cloud computing technology provides the means to share physical resources among multiple users and data center tenants by exposing them as virtual resources. There is a strong industrial drive to use similar technology and concepts to provide timing sensitive services. One such is virtual networking services, so called services chains, which consist of several interconnected virtual network functi

GIS-based Maps and Area Estimates of Northern Hemisphere Permafrost Extent during the Last Glacial Maximum

This study presents GIS-based estimates of permafrost extent in the northern circumpolar region during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), based on a review of previously published maps and compilations of field evidence in the form of ice-wedge pseudomorphs and relict sand wedges. We focus on field evidence localities in areas thought to have been located along the past southern border of permafrost.

Distributions at random events

We review the generalized Rice formula approachto deriving long-run distributions of a variety of characteristics defined at random events defined on a stochastic process. While the approach stems from the same principle originally introduced by Rice for the level crossing intensity in a random signal, we show how it generalizes to more general contexts. Firstly, we discuss events defined on rando

Efficacy and Toxicity of Intrathecal Liposomal Cytarabine in First-line Therapy of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

We investigated efficacy and toxicity of replacing conventional triple (cytarabine, methotrexate, and hydrocortisone) intrathecal therapy (TIT) with liposomal cytarabine during maintenance therapy among 40 acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients. Twenty-eight of 29 patients in the TIT arm received TIT and 9/11 in the liposomal cytarabine arm received liposomal cytarabine. Arachnoiditis occurred in a

Solvent-free synthesis of chiral molecularly imprinted polymers: Porosity control using a nano-sized solid porogen

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been synthesized in the absence of a solvent using fumed silica nanoparticles to create a porous network. The method employed led to a chiral imprinting effect and allowed for an excellent control over the internal morphology of imprinted and non-imprinted polymer (NIP) materials. The polymers possess high surface areas (>300 m2) and identical pore size (

Transmuted distributions and extrema of random number of variables

Recent years have seen an increased interest in the transmuted probability models, which arise from transforming a “base” distribution into its generalized counterpart. While many standard probability distributions were generalized throughout this simple construction, the concept lacked deeper theoretical interpretation. This note demonstrates that the scheme is more than just a simple trick to obt

Tailored climate indices for climate-proofing operational forestry applications in Sweden and Finland

ABSTRACT: In the light of the observed and projected regional warming trend in northern Europe, new recommendations are needed for climate-proofing the selection of forest trees seedlings and growth estimates. Drawing on recently developed climate data sets, both observations of the recent past, and scenarios for the future we present and analyse a set of climate indices tailored to be used for op

Autophagy dysfunction and regulatory cystatin C in macrophage death of atherosclerosis

Autophagy dysfunction in mouse atherosclerosis models has been associated with increased lipid accumulation, apoptosis and inflammation. Expression of cystatin C (CysC) is decreased in human atheroma, and CysC deficiency enhances atherosclerosis in mice. Here, we first investigated the association of autophagy and CysC expression levels with atheroma plaque severity in human atherosclerotic lesion

Attractive ion-ion correlation forces and the dielectric approximation

We analyze the classical problem of the interaction between two charged surfaces separated by a solution containing neutralizing counter-ions. The focus is on obtaining a description where the solvent is treated explicitly rather than through a dielectric approximation as is conventionally done. We summarize the results of three papers where we have used a Stockmayer fluid model in Monte Carlo sim

Fast-track access to urologic care for patients with macroscopic haematuria is efficient and cost-effective : results from a prospective intervention study

Background:The delay between onset of macroscopic haematuria and diagnosis of bladder cancer is often long. Methods:We evaluated timely diagnosis and health-care costs for patients with macroscopic haematuria given fast-track access to diagnostics. During a 15-month period, a telephone hotline for fast-track diagnostics was provided in nine Swedish municipalities for patients aged ⩾50 years with ma

Central limit theorems for functionals of large dimensional sample covariance matrix and mean vector in matrix-variate skewed model

In this paper we consider the asymptotic distributions of functionals of the sample covariance matrix and the sample mean vector obtained under the assumption that the matrix of observations has a matrix variate general skew normal distribution. The central limit theorem is derived for the product of the sample covariance matrix and the sample mean vector. Moreover, we consider the product of an i

Sandy fan-like forms in the central-eastern mazovian lowland (central poland) : Textural record and chronology

A unique, continuous, fan-shaped belt of sandy landforms in the central-eastern Mazovian Lowland, Central Poland has been investigated using a multiproxy dataset of sediment physical properties and chronological framework. Although there are several previous studies of similar fan-like forms elsewhere in Central Poland, this central-eastern part has not been investigated in detail. A combined meth

Atrial Fibrillation in Transient Ischemic Attack Versus Ischemic Stroke : A Swedish Stroke Register (Riksstroke) Study

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE—: Compared with ischemic stroke (IS), the association of atrial fibrillation (AF) with transient ischemic attack (TIA) is less well established. We aimed to assess the proportion of AF in patients with TIA, and these patients’ characteristics and secondary preventive treatment in comparison to patients with IS. METHODS—: Hospital-based data on TIA and IS events, registered f

Efficient multipowers

We show how to minimize the asymptotic variance of multipower estimators using a linear combination of optimal powers. Taking advantage of the lower variance provided by this technique allows to build superior estimators of integrated volatility powers. In particular, we focus on a new efficient quarticity estimator and we show, using simulated data, that we can drastically reduce the mean square

Impact of genetic modulation of SULT1A enzymes on DNA adduct formation by aristolochic acids and 3-nitrobenzanthrone

Exposure to aristolochic acid (AA) causes aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN) and Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN). Conflicting results have been found for the role of human sulfotransferase 1A1 (SULT1A1) contributing to the metabolic activation of aristolochic acid I (AAI) in vitro. We evaluated the role of human SULT1A1 in AA bioactivation in vivo after treatment of transgenic mice carrying a fu

Spatial size of waves

A method of measuring three-dimensional spatial wave size is proposed and statistical distributions of the size characteristics are derived in explicit integral forms for Gaussian sea surfaces. New definitions of wave characteristics such as the crest-height, the length, the size and the wave front location are provided in fully dimensional context. The joint statistical distributions of these wav
