The study is carried out as a comparative case study of Uganda and Madagascar, which have, despite similar initial socio-economic conditions, experienced diverging trends in the domestic water supply between 1992 and 2016. The cases are assessed using a theoretical fram

Develop a method to detect nanoparticles in tap water using AF4

40 L tap water was ultra-filtered by M10 lab unit using 10 kDa regenerated membrane and 800 nm syringe filter to get the NPs. The filter NPs are then separated and characterized using asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation with coupled multi angle light scattering (AF4-MALS). Calibration curve for determining the size distribution is made by polystyrene latex bead (20, 60, 100, 300, and 500 nm

Impact of the CEO Age and CSR Score on Mergers and Acquisitions

This study intends to combine both the management characteristics and firm’s characteristics to analyse the M&A performance. For the management characteristics, we used the CEO age and for the firm characteristics, we used the CSR score. In order to understand the M&A performance, we conducted an Event Study to predict the abnormal stock returns of the acquiring firm around the announcemen

Make the numbers great again

Rapportens syftar till att granska förekomsten av eventuellt signifikant samband mellan resultatmanipulering och börsintroduktion för svenska företag samt därmed bidra till att reducera det rådande forskningsgapet på den svenska marknaden. Dessutom ämnades eventuella utmärkande egenskaper för företag som manipulerar resultatet på svenska marknaden att studeras, genom tillämpning av modifierade JonThe aim of the report has been to analyze whether Swedish companies that undergo initial public offering use Earnings Management. Further, the aim has been to analyze whether there are explanatory variables for the companies that uses Earnings Management with the use of the modified Jones model. This study has been performed with a quantitative method with a deductive approach for an analysis of

AI-based machine vision for retail self-checkout system

Vi har alla stått alldeles för länge i en kö för att handla den där chipspåsen, lunchlådan eller lördagsgodiset. Att handla mat är ett måste för oss alla, och de flesta av oss föredrar att få det överstökat så snabbt som möjligt. Detaljhandeln erbjuder snabbkassor, men nu är det dags för nästa steg, helt automatiska lösningar som använder den senaste tekniken inom datorseende och artificiell intelIn recent years advances in computing power, availability of large annotated datasets and AI algorithms have enabled the rise of reliable object identification and tracking. This thesis describes the development and implementation considerations of a system for object detection in the retail industry. This project have been conducted as a collaboration between ETH Zürich and start-up company AI Re

The Profit-Investment Nexus: Dynamics of Profitability, Capital Formation, and Distribution in Sweden and the UK, 1950-2016

With the present thesis I aim to explore what accounts for fluctuations in capital formation and profitability in Sweden and the UK since 1950. Do expectations rule investments which in turn determine profits, or is it rather profitability that rule expectations and thus investment behaviour? Applying a finite distributed-lag model on a variety of variables, profits emerge as a reliable key factor

Modelling Intensive Care Unit Length of Stay and Mortality Using Artificial Neural Networks

I det här projektet har intagningsdata till intensivvårdsavdelningar, in- nehållande allt ifrån information om kroppstA large data set, consisting of 300 000 patients’ admission data to various intensive care units in Sweden, acquired from the Swedish Intensive Care Register, was used in this work. The aim was to enable accurate Length of Stay (LOS) and mortality within 30 days predictions by using feed-forward Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). The LOS outcome was predicted as short versus long time stays, with

"Legality in international criminal law; a human rights standard?"

The principle of legality is a fundamental principle of criminal law. The added value of the UN Draft Norms as compared to existing codes on Corporate Social Responsibility and their legal status

When the United Nations was created in 1945, states were the only significant decision-makers. Even with the construction of the human rights regime in the aftermath of the Second World War, states were designated as the only duty-bearers who could violate international human rights law. States alone were held responsible for implementing human rights principles by enforcing treaty-based obligatio

Is The Strict Global Protection of Intellectual Property Unfair for Developing Countries?

Will developing countries benefit economically from strengthening their protection of intellectual property? They have been repeatedly urged to do so by developed nations. But so far there is little empirical experience of either quite successful or failed examples.
