A continuity flow based tomographic reconstruction algorithm for 4D multi-beam high temporal—low angular sampling

A mathematical framework and accompanying numerical algorithm exploiting the continuity equation for 4D reconstruction of spatiotemporal attenuation fields from multi-angle full-field transmission measurements is presented. The algorithm is geared towards rotation-free dynamic multi-beam X-ray tomography measurements, for which angular information is sparse but the temporal information is rich. 3D

A Colonial Celebrity in the New Attention Economy : Cecil Rhodes’s Cape-to-Cairo Telegraph and Railway Negotiations in 1899

In 1899, the British colonialist Cecil Rhodes went to Berlin to negotiate about his fantastical ‘Cape-to-Cairo’ telegraph and railway scheme with his former nemesis, the German emperor Wilhelm II. Why did this initiative of Rhodes, who was held responsible for the disastrous Jameson Raid and no longer occupied any official position, receive so much coverage and legitimacy in the international pres

The Sound of Serpents and Serpent-Slayers in Indo-European and Northwest Semitic

This paper is centered around using poetic-mythological vocabulary from Northwest Semitic languages as a key to reconstruction of IE phraseology. Mythological material from the NWS area – especially Ugaritic – can sometimes be shown to represent Indo-European borrowings into NWS poetic language; by studying these cases, knowledge may be gleaned about the loan-giver.The famous phrase *egwhent ogwhi

Förnyelsebara energibärares nuvarande och framtida konkurrenskraft : föreställningar om konkurrenskraft

The dissertation draws attention to the fact that in the world today 80% of the resources that are used are limited - non renewable energy carriers - and because of the long time between planning and doing (carrying out) within the energy sector, it is worthwhile from the long-term perspective to steer early on towards more sustain-able solutions, such as renewable energy carriers. The State and t

PPARGC1A Gene Promoter Methylation as a Biomarker of Insulin Secretion and Sensitivity in Response to Glucose Challenges

Methylation in CpG sites of the PPARGC1A gene (encoding PGC1-α) has been associated with adiposity, insulin secretion/sensitivity indexes and type 2 diabetes. We assessed the association between the methylation profile of the PPARGC1A gene promoter gene in leukocytes with insulin secretion/sensitivity indexes in normoglycemic women. A standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and an abbreviated

Mäns yrkesliv från medelålder till pensionering

In this chapter, an individual life story of a shipyard blacksmith is the point of departure for discussing elderly men’s labour market experiences. This story, which can be summarized as occupational continuity in a turbulent period, is in line with an optimistic view of the situation of elderly men in an era of profound changes in the technology and organization of work, is contrasted against th

Levnadsbanor och rörlighetsmönster : En introduktion

Research in the field of historical demography and related areas have in recent decades made increasing use of longitudinal population databases. This research has mainly focused on rural populations before 1900. This book belongs to a movement that seeks to bridge the gap in historical demography by adding urban populations from the twentieth century. The book is made up of individual chapters re

Befolkning, bostäder och arbete i den mogna industristaden

In this chapter, we describe the city of Gothenburg in the first half of the twentieth century. The chapter is mainly based on reviews of official statistics and previous research, and starts with an account of how the size and composition of Gothenburg’s population changed. We establish that the city doubled in population between 1910 and the end of the Second World War, partly as a consequence o

Inkomster över livs-och familjecykeln

In this chapter, we investigate income differentials across the life cycle at the individual and household levels. The main contribution is to compile basic patterns of age–earnings relationships by sex, occupation and family situation. At the individual level we find age–earnings patterns similar to those observed for the period following the Second World War, for example in the seminal works of

Arbetsmarknadens delar : Yrkesväxlingar och arbetsgivarbyten

This chapter deals with labour mobility and labour market segmentation in Gothenburg in 1915–1943. For this purpose, the Gothenburg Population Panel offers unique research opportunities as it includes information about employers, as well as occupation and source of income. Thus, it is possible to capture labour mobility in a wide sense, not only distinguishing between changes of employer and occup
