United States Pulmonary Hypertension Scientific Registry (USPHSR): rationale, design, and clinical implications

Diagnostic World Health Organization (WHO) Group 1 pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and Diagnostic Group 1' pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) and/or pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis (PCH) are progressive and fatal disorders. Past registries provided important insights into these disorders, but did not include hormonal exposures or genomic data. New publication in Sage Journals.Read m

How to measure temporal changes in care pathways for chronic diseases using health care registry data

Disease trajectories for chronic diseases can span over several decades, with several time-dependent factors affecting treatment decisions. Thus, there is a need for long-term predictions of disease trajectories to inform patients and healthcare professionals on the long-term outcomes and provide information on the need of future health care. New publication in BMC Medical Informatics and Decision

Smoking-induced risk of future cardiovascular disease is partly mediated by cadmium in tobacco: Malmö Diet and Cancer Cohort Study.

Smoking is a strong risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and causes exposure to cadmium, which is a pro-atherosclerotic metal. Cadmium exposure has also been shown to increase the risk of CVD, even after adjustment for smoking. Our hypothesis was that part of the risk of CVD in smokers may be mediated by cadmium exposure from tobacco smoke. We examined this hypothesis in a mediation analys

Causal Mediation Analysis for Standardized Mortality Ratios

Indirectly standardized mortality ratios (SMR) are often used to compare patient outcomes between health care providers as indicators of quality of care. Observed differences in the outcomes raise the question of whether these could be causally attributable to earlier processes or outcomes in the pathway of care that the patients received. Such pathways can be naturally addressed in a causal media

The development of spasticity with age in 4,162 children with cerebral palsy: a register-based prospective cohort study

Spasticity is often regarded as a major cause of functional limitation in children with cerebral palsy (CP). We analyzed the spasticity development with age in the gastrosoleus muscle in children with CP. New publication in Acta Prthopaedica.Read more here.

[26 Years of the Erlangen Glaucoma Registry: Demographic and Perimetric Characteristics of Patients Through the Ages].

The history of the Erlangen Glaucoma Registry goes back 26 years. In this study, we present retrospective demographic and perimetric data on the initial visit of patients with ocular hypertension (OHT), pre-perimetric (prePOAG) and perimetric primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), normal tension glaucoma (NTG) and secondary open-angle glaucoma (SOAG) and correlate these results with the latest perime

Editorial Commentary: From Oslo to MARS and the MOON!: Large Anterior Cruciate Ligament Registries Allow Analyses of Revisions and Re-revisions.

Large registry studies are powerful because of inclusion of large numbers of patients. Knee anterior cruciate ligament repeat revision surgery is rare (<10% at 8 years). The reasons require additional investigation. Patients may be counseled that, based on demographic factors, it is difficult to predict who will need re-revision. New publication in Arthroscopy.Read more here.
