Long-term beneficial effects of glipizide treatment on glucose tolerance in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance
To assess the efficacy and long-term effects of glipizide treatment on glucose and insulin metabolism in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Thirty-seven first-degree relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes fulfilling WHO criteria for IGT were randomized to treatment with either glipizide 2.5 mg once daily or matching placebo for 6 months. A 75 g, 2-h oral (OGTT) and 60 min intra
Critical loads - is there a need for a new concept?
The concept of critical loads has been an important and successful tool for the development of control strategies for transboundary air pollution in Europe. The use of the concept has led us to a situation where very few areas in Europe will have an exceedance of critical loads for acidification in 2010, indicating that the benefits of further control acidifying substances will be less useful. The
Probing the functional role of the N-terminal region of cystatins by equilibrium and kinetic studies of the binding of Gly-11 variants of recombinant human cystatin C to target proteinases
The interaction between cystatin C variants, in which the evolutionarily conserved Gly-11 residue was substituted by Ala, Glu or Trp, and the cysteine proteinases, papain, ficin, actinidin and cathepsin B, was characterized. The substitutions reduced the affinity of binding in a manner consistent with the Gly residue of the wild-type inhibitor, allowing the N-terminal region to adopt a conformatio
Vattenavvisande fasadimpregnering : laboratorieundersökningar 1992-94
I föreliggande rapport redovisas resultat från en brett upplagd laboratorieundersökning av ett stort antal vattenavvisande preparat.
The adsorption site of methoxy and ethoxy on Cu(100) as determined by vibrational spectroscopy and first principle calculations
In the present work we determine the adsorption site of two polyatomic molecules, methoxy and ethoxy, on Cu(100). This is accomplished by comparing experimental intramolecular vibrational modes to the corresponding modes calculated by first principle methods. We explore the three different high symmetry adsorption sites on top, bridge and hollow using several different metal clusters to represent
Electron transfer from the singlet and triplet excited states of Ru(dcbpy)(2)(NCS)(2) into nanocrystalline TiO2 thin films
Time-resolved absorption spectroscopy was used to study the femtosecond and picosecond time scale electron injection from the excited singlet and triplet states of Ru(dcbpY)(2)(NCS)(2) (RuN3) into titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocrystalline particle film in acetonitrile. The fastest resolved time constant of similar to30 fs was shown to reflect a sum of two parallel ultrafast processes, nonergodic ele

Incidence of Stroke and Stroke Subtypes in Malmo, Sweden, 1990-2000. Marked Differences Between Groups Defined by Birth Country.
Background and Purpose-The proportion of immigrants has increased in Sweden markedly during the last decades, as in many other Western countries. Incidence of stroke has increased during this period. However, it is primarily unknown whether incidence of stroke and stroke subtypes in Sweden is related to country of birth. Methods-Incidence of first-ever stroke was followed during 10 years in a coho
Att placera eller inte placera i släktinghem, det är frågan : En studie kring familjehemsplaceringar - lagstiftning, attityder och handläggning inom socialtjänsten
In the licentiate thesis my starting point is the Social Service Act and specifically, chapter 6, paragraph 5 which directs one to primarily consider the suitability of placing a child with a relative or a person known to the family. The objective of the thesis is to examine how the topic concerning placement with relatives arose and how the regulation reflects on child care within social work. An
The human IgE-encoding transcriptome to assess antibody repertoires and repertoire evolution
Upon encounter with antigen, the B lymphocyte population responds by producing a diverse set of antigen-specific antibodies of various isotypes. The vast size of the responding populations makes it very difficult to study clonal evolution and repertoire composition occurring during these processes in humans. Here, we have explored an approach utilizing the H-EPSILON-encoding transcriptome to inves
Chimeric antibody-binding Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) mediates redox-catalysis reaction: new insight into the functional role of VHb : new insight into the functional role of VHb
Experimentation was initiated to explore insight into the redox-catalysis reaction derived from the heme prosthetic group of chimeric Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb). Two chimeric genes encoding chimeric VHbs harboring one and two consecutive sequences of Fc-binding motif (Z-domain) were successfully constructed and expressed in E. coli strain TG1. The chimeric ZVHb and ZZVHb were purified to a high
Human vascular smooth muscle cells from restenosis or in-stent stenosis sites demonstrate enhanced responses to p53: implications for brachytherapy and drug treatment for restenosis
The p53 tumor suppressor gene regulates growth arrest and apoptosis after DNA damage. Recent studies suggest that p53 is inactive in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in human angioplasty restenosis, promoting VSMC accumulation and vessel stenosis. In contrast, the success of irradiation (brachytherapy) for in-stent restenosis argues that DNA-damage p53 responses are intact. We examined p53 exp
Centrality dependence of the high (PT) charged hadron suppression in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=130 GeV
PHENIX has measured the centrality dependence of charged hadron p(T) spectra from Au +An collisions at root(s)NN = 130 GeV The truncated mean p(T) decreases with centrality for p(T) > 2 GeV/c, indicating an apparent reduction of the contribution from hard scattering to high p(T) hadrdn production. For central collisions the yield at high p(T) is shown to be suppressed compared to binary nucleon-nu
The N-terminal of thrombospondin-1 is essential for coagulase-negative staphylococcal binding
Bacterial binding was studied to determine whether thrombospondin-1 (TSP) acts as a ligand in attachment of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). Twenty-five of 27 CNS strains bound soluble TSP. Staphylococcus epidermidis J9P bound 125I-labelled TSP in a dose-dependent manner. Scatchard plot analysis of the binding of TSP by strain J9P revealed two Kd values of 6.4x10-95muM and 2.9x10-85muM. The
Enhanced sensory recovery after median nerve repair using cortical audio-tactile interaction. A randomised multicentre study.
The "Sensor Glove System" offers an alternate afferent inflow from the hand early after nerve repair in the forearm, mediated through the hearing sense, implying that deprivation of one sense can be compensated by another sense. This sensory "by-pass" was used early after repair of the median nerve with the intention of improving recovery of functional sensibility by maintaining an active sensory
City structure - societal driving forces and effects (in Book & Eskilsson: City structure. Why and how?)
Stadens struktur har under historiens gång påverkats av bland annat nya teknologWhy do cities appear the way they do? What are the underlying forces that contribute to its built environment and transport system? What/whom are the factors/actors that influence the ways in which the city is shaped? How can the international differences in the shape of cities be explained? The driving forces that shape the city are numerous and complex. City structure, has through the ages, been
Aspects of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis in children and adolescents
The aims of this thesis were to 1) compare different methods for detection of antibodies against thyroglobulin (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb), particulary in children with chronic autoimmune thyroditis (AIT), 2) investigate if maternal enterovirus infection is a risk factor for development of AIT in offspring, 3) ascertain the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies in cord blood sera from chi
Single molecular imaging and spectroscopy of conjugated polyelectrolytes decorated on stretched aligned DNA
DNA is the prototype template for building nanoelectronic devices by self-assembly. The electronic functions are made possible by coordinating electronic polymer chains to DNA. This paper demonstrates two methods for fabrication of aligned and ordered DNA nanowires complexed with conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs). The complex can be formed either in solution prior to stretching or after stretchin
