Biochemical and Physiological Characterization of Nonsymbiotic Plant Hemoglobins

Popular Abstract in English People normally associate hemoglobin with blood. It is true that the iron in the center of the hemoglobin molecule makes it excellent at carrying oxygen in the bloodstream from the lungs to every part of the body. However, seventy five years ago a hemoglobin was found in a plant. And plants do not have blood. So what is hemoglobin doing in plants? What are its functionsHemoglobins (Hb) are usually associated with blood in humans. However, these proteins are widely distributed among living organisms. In plants the most known group are the leghemoglobins. Still, other Hbs that not participate in symbiosis are also found. They are known as nonsymbiotic Hbs (nsHbs). NsHbs are divided into class-1 and class-2. In this thesis three nsHbs from sugar beet (BvHb1-1, BvHb

Rainfall-Runoff Modelling Using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs)

Over the last decades or so, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have become one of the most promising tools for modelling hydrological processes such as rainfall-runoff processes. In most studies, ANNs have been demonstrated to show superior result compared to the traditional modelling approaches. They are able to map underlying relationships between input and output data without detailed knowledge

New seeds for poor women? Reflections on the Multinational New Rice for Africa (Nerica) dissemination project in Sierra Leone

The introduction of new farming technologies, such as high-yielding varieties, has for long been regarded as one of the best strategies to increase agricultural production, and to combat poverty and food-insecurity. Since around 2005, New Rice for Africa (Nerica) is one of the main development strategies for combating such issues in Sierra Leone, and in many other African countries. Africa Rice Ce

The added value of the UN Draft Norms as compared to existing codes on Corporate Social Responsibility and their legal status

When the United Nations was created in 1945, states were the only significant decision-makers. Even with the construction of the human rights regime in the aftermath of the Second World War, states were designated as the only duty-bearers who could violate international human rights law. States alone were held responsible for implementing human rights principles by enforcing treaty-based obligatio

The solidarity clause- its present and future effects from a constitutional perspective

The solidarity clause was drafted a year after the terrorist attack in New York in 2001 and was informally further substantialised after the terrorist attack in Madrid in 2004. It became evident that terrorism is also a real and current threat to the Member States of the EU. The solidarity clause is now a part of the Constitutional Treaty (CT), which at the moment is subject to ratification in the
