Crystal Phases in III-V Nanowires: From Random Toward Engineered Polytypism

III-V nanowires (NWs) are promising for a wide range of applications, ranging from optics to electronics, energy, and biological sensing. The structural quality of NWs is of paramount importance for the performance of such future NW-based devices. Random structural defects and polytypism occur naturally in semiconductor NWs, but progress both on the theoretical understanding and experimental contr

Telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter mutations in primary cutaneous melanoma.

We previously reported a disease segregating causal germline mutation in a melanoma family and recurrent somatic mutations in metastasized tumours from unrelated patients in the core promoter region of the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene. Here we show that the TERT promoter mutations, besides causing an increased gene expression, associate with increased patient age, increased Breslow

The pathway of obstructed labour as perceived by communities in south-western Uganda: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Obstructed labour is still a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality in Uganda, where many women give birth at home alone or assisted by non-skilled birth attendants. Little is known of how the community view obstructed labour, and what actions they take in cases where this complication occurs. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to explore community members

Gestational Age at Birth and Mortality in Young Adulthood

Context Preterm birth is the leading cause of infant mortality in developed countries, but the association between gestational age at birth and mortality in adulthood remains unknown. Objective To examine the association between gestational age at birth and mortality in young adulthood. Design, Setting, and Participants National cohort study of 674 820 individuals born as singletons in Sweden in 1

User involvement in service delivery predicts outcomes of assistive technology use: A cross-sectional study in Bangladesh

Background: Knowledge about the relation between user involvement in the provision of assistive technology and outcomes of assistive technology use is a prerequisite for the development of efficient service delivery strategies. However, current knowledge is limited, particularly from low-income countries where affordability is an issue. The objective was therefore to explore the relation between o

Genetic Variants in Hormone-Related Genes and Risk of Breast Cancer

Sex hormones play a key role in the development of breast cancer. Certain polymorphic variants (SNPs and repeat polymorphisms) in hormone-related genes are associated with sex hormone levels. However, the relationship observed between these genetic variants and breast cancer risk has been inconsistent. We conducted a case-control study nested within two prospective cohorts to assess the relationsh

Patterns of alcohol consumption and risky sexual behavior: a cross-sectional study among Ugandan university students.

As reflected in elevated rates of sexually transmitted infections, there is a high prevalence of risky sexual behavior among Ugandan university students. It has been assumed that alcohol contributes to risky sexual behavior. However, perhaps owing to methodological issues, this relationship has found only mixed support in empirical research. The present study analyzes the association between alcoh

Probing Strain in Bent Semiconductor Nanowires with Raman Spectroscopy.

We present a noninvasive optical method to determine the local strain in individual semiconductor nanowires. InP nanowires were intentionally bent with an atomic force microscope and variations in the optical phonon frequency along the wires were mapped using Raman spectroscopy. Sections of the nanowires with a high curvature showed significantly broadened phonon lines. These observations together

Electrochemical behavior and application of Prussian blue nanoparticle modified graphite electrode

Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) were immobilized on the surface of a graphite electrode (GE) through a simple adsorption route and then the modified surface was covered with a layer of Nafion. The electrochemical behavior of the resulting sensor was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The sensor showed good electrocatalytic activity toward hydrogen peroxide reduction,

Cancer of unknown primary (CUP): does cause of death and family history implicate hidden phenotypically changed primaries?

Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is diagnosed at the metastatic stage. We aimed to identify hidden primary cancers in CUP patients by comparison with cancers in family members. We take use of the fact that the cause of death in CUP patients is often coded as the cancer in the organ of fatal metastasis. Forty-one thousand five hundred and twenty-three CUP patients were identified in the Swedish Fami

Trötta mammors försvarare : familjevärderingar i Kerstin Thorvalls bilderböcker från 1970-talet

Kerstin Thorvall (1925–2010) is a Swedish author of books for children and young adults, as well as books for adults. In 1965, she wrote the article “Do all authors of children's books live in Tomtebolandet?” (“Bor alla barnboksförfattare i Tomtebolandet”, Expressen 1965) in which she claims that gender roles in Swedish children's literature, are depicted in an old and stereotypical fashion. She a

HLA Class I and Genetic Susceptibility to Type 1 Diabetes Results From the Type 1 Diabetes Genetics Consortium

OBJECTIVE-We report here genotyping data and type 1 diabetes association analyses for HLA class I loci (A, B, and C) on 1,753 multiplex pedigrees from the Type 1 Diabetes Genetics Consortium (T1DGC), a large international collaborative study. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-Complete eight-locus HLA genotyping data were generated. Expected patient class I (HLA-A, -B, and -C) allele frequencies were cal

Enhanced Anisotropic Effective g Factors of an Al10.25Ga0.75N/GaN Heterostructure Based Quantum Point Contact

Gate-defined quantum point contacts (QPCs) were fabricated with Al0.25Ga0.75N/GaN heterostructures grown by metal organic chemical Vapor deposition (MOCVD). In the transport study of the Zeeman effect, greatly enhanced effective g factors (g*).were obtained. The in-plane g* is found to be 5.5 +/- 0.6, 4.8 0.4, and 4.2 0.4 for the first to the third subband, respectively. Similarly, the out-of-plan

Phylogenetically diverse TT virus viremia among pregnant women

Infections during pregnancy have been suggested to be involved in childhood leukemias. We used high-throughput sequencing to describe the viruses most readily detectable in serum samples of pregnant women. Serum DNA of 112 mothers to leukemic children was amplified using whole genome amplification. Sequencing identified one TT virus (TTV) isolate belonging to a known type and two putatively new TT

Occurrence and relative risk of stroke in incident and prevalent contemporary rheumatoid arthritis

Objective In contrast with the wealth of data on ischaemic heart disease in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), data on stroke are scarce and contradictory. Despite the high clinical and aetiological relevance, there is no data regarding when (if ever) after RA diagnosis there is an increased risk. Our objective was to assess the risk of stroke (by subtype) in contemporary patients with RA, particularly in

Assistive technology use is associated with reduced capability poverty: a cross-sectional study in Bangladesh.

Purpose: About half of all people with disabilities in developing countries live in extreme poverty. Focusing on the ends rather than the economic means of human development, the capability approach offers an alternative view of poverty. The purpose of this study was to explore the relation between assistive technology use and capability poverty in a low-income country. Method: Self-reported data

Transport studies of electron-hole and spin-orbit interaction in GaSb/InAsSb core-shell nanowire quantum dots

We report low-temperature transport studies of parallel double quantum dots formed in GaSb/InAsSb core-shell nanowires. At negative gate voltages, regular patterns of Coulomb diamonds are observed in the charge stability diagrams, which we ascribe to single-hole tunneling through a quantum dot in the GaSb core. As the gate voltage increases, the measured charge stability diagram indicates the appe
