LRP8 is a receptor for tick-borne encephalitis virus

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) causes tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a severe and sometimes life-threatening disease characterized by viral invasion of the central nervous system with symptoms of neuroinflammation1,2. As with other orthoflaviviruses—enveloped, arthropod-borne RNA viruses—host factors required for TBEV entry remain poorly defined. Here we used a genome-scale CRISPR–Cas9-based

Boosting catalytic performance of ternary FeCoNi yolk-shelled nanoreactors for organic reactions via low-content active metal decoration

Nanoreactors have attracted extensive research and attention in the field of catalysis due to their unique surface/interface structures and physicochemical properties. However, conventional nanoreactors have limited catalytic performance due to the confinement of their active components in the “nanochamber”. Herein, low-content active metal (AM, AM = Pd, Cu) decorated yolk-shelled FeCoNiOx (AM/FeC

Cospectral Trees Indistinguishable by Scattering

Let v1 and v2 be two distinct vertices of an equilateral tree T0. Let ϕN(i) (i=1,2) be the characteristic functions of the Sturm-Liouville problem on T0 rooted at vi with Neumann conditions at the root and let ϕD(i) (i=1,2) be the characteristic functions of the Sturm-Liouville problem on T0 with Dirichlet conditions at the root. We prove that if attaching any tree to T0 at the vertices v1 and v2

The relationship in women between genetic liability and the risk of onset of alcohol use disorder while pregnant or rearing an infant, toddler, or preschool child

While pregnancy clearly reduces the risk for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) onset, we know less about the impact on AUD risk of having young children and how these effects vary across maternal age and level of maternal AUD genetic risk. Therefore, in 1.2 million parous Swedish women born 1960-1995, we examined those with a first registration for AUD between ages 15-40 while first pregnant, or while ra

How do different combinations of the number of diseases and experienced symptoms relate to life satisfaction in 80-year-olds?

Objectives: This study explores how different combinations of the number of diseases and experienced symptoms are related to life satisfaction in a population of 296 eighty-year-olds in southern Sweden. Methods: Three different models, visualizing different health profiles, in the form of reported number of diseases and number of experienced symptoms in different combinations were created and are

Day-to-Day Living Expenses and Mental Health

We use rich longitudinal survey and register data on Swedish individuals to examine the relationship between financial strain and mental health. Specifically, we consider the longitudinal relationships between payment difficulties and subjective (self-reported anxiety) as well as objective (psychiatric drug use) measures of mental ill-health. Among previously healthy individuals, payment difficult

Optimization schemes for efficient multiple exciton generation and extraction in colloidal quantum dots

Multiple exciton generation (MEG) is a process in which more than one electron hole pair is generated per absorbed photon. It allows us to increase the efficiency of solar energy harvesting. Experimental studies have shown the multiple exciton generation yield of 1.2 in isolated colloidal quantum dots. However real photoelectric devices require the extraction of electron hole pairs to electric con

Long-term oxygen therapy 24 vs 15 h/day and mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) ≥ 15 h/day improves survival in hypoxemic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). LTOT 24 h/day is often recommended but may pose an unnecessary burden with no clear survival benefit compared with LTOT 15 h/day. The aim was to test the hypothesis that LTOT 24 h/day decreases all-cause, respiratory, and cardiovascular mortality compared to LTOT 15 h/day in hypo

Computational characterization of competing energy and electron transfer states in bimetallic donor-acceptor systems for photocatalytic conversion

The rapidly growing interest in photocatalytic systems for direct solar fuel production such as hydrogen generation from water splitting is grounded in the unique opportunity to achieve charge separation in molecular systems provided by electron transfer processes. In general, both photoinduced and catalytic processes involve complicated dynamics that depend on both structural and electronic effec

Reduction of Streptococcus pneumoniae in upper respiratory tract cultures and a decreased incidence of related acute otitis media following introduction of childhood pneumococcal conjugate vaccines in a Swedish county

Background: The effect of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) on invasive pneumococcal disease is frequently reported, but the impact on upper respiratory tract infections in a clinical setting is less documented. Our aim in this 5-year observational study was to investigate serotype changes in a large number of Streptococcus pneumoniae upper respiratory tract isolates following sequential intro

Persistent disabling breathlessness in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Objective: To determine the prevalence, change in breathlessness status over time, and risk factors for disabling and persistent disabling breathlessness in relation to treatments in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Materials and methods: Longitudinal analysis of data from the Swedish National Register of COPD with breathlessness measured using modified Medical Research Council (mMRC)

iNOS affects matrix production in distal lung fibroblasts from patients with mild asthma.

A high level of exhaled nitric oxide (NO) is a marker for inflammation in the airways of asthmatic subjects. However, little is known about how NO and inducible nitric oxides synthase (iNOS) activity may affect remodelling in the distal lung. We hypothesized that there is a link between iNOS and ongoing remodelling processes in the distal lung of mild asthmatics.

Regulation of advanced therapy medicinal products in Europe and the role of academia

Background aims. Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP) are gene therapy, somatic cell therapy or tissue-engineered products regulated under (EC) No. 1394/2007 to ensure their free movement within the European Union while guaranteeing the highest level of health protection for patients. Academic good manufacturing practice (GMP) centers are major contributors in the development of ATMPs and th

Active signals, gradient formation and regional specificity in neural induction.

The question of how the vertebrate embryo gives rise to a nervous system is of paramount interest in developmental biology. Neural induction constitutes the earliest step in this process and is tightly connected with development of the embryonic body axes. In the Xenopus embryo, perpendicular gradients of BMP and Wnt signals pattern the dorsoventral and anteroposterior body axes. Both pathways nee

Numerical contribution to segmented chip effect on residual stress distribution in orthogonal cutting of Inconel718

Segmented chip morphology has a significant influence on distribution of residual stress and surface topography on machined surface in machining difficult-to-cut materials. In this paper, Coupled Eulerian and Lagrangian (CEL) model is employed to investigate the effect of segmented chip on surface integrity (residual stress distribution and surface topography) in orthogonal machining of Inconel718

On the interaction of softwood hemicellulose with cellulose surfaces in relation to molecular structure and physicochemical properties of hemicellulose

The substantial part of the water-soluble hemicellulose fraction, obtained when processing cellulose to produce paper and other products, has so far been discarded. The aim of this work is to reveal the interfacial properties of softwood hemicellulose (galactoglucomannan, GGM) in relation to their molecular and solution structure. In this study the sugar composition of GGM was characterised by che

Particle characterization and toxicity in C57BL/6 mice following instillation of five different diesel exhaust particles designed to differ in physicochemical properties

BACKGROUND: Diesel exhaust is carcinogenic and exposure to diesel particles cause health effects. We investigated the toxicity of diesel exhaust particles designed to have varying physicochemical properties in order to attribute health effects to specific particle characteristics. Particles from three fuel types were compared at 13% engine intake O2 concentration: MK1 ultra low sulfur diesel (DEP1

Fano's propensity rule in angle-resolved attosecond interferometry

Above-threshold ionization is a corner stone of attsecond science. In this work we extend Fano's propensity rule to two-photon above-threshold ionization and show that the asymmetry between absorption and emission of the second photon predicted by this propensity rule has strong implications for angle-resolved pump-probe experiments and in particular for attosecond photoelectron interferometry.
