Den 5 juni 2016 helgonförklarades Maria Elisabeth Hesselblad (1870-1957), grundarinnan av den romerska grenen av birgittinorden. Hon är det andra svenska helgonet efter heliga Birgitta som kanoniserats av påven. Intressant nog har hon återupprättat just den ordensgemenskap som går tillbaka på heliga Birgitta, om än i ny form.
